I am a global supplier relationship and contract manager implementing a Governance process which includes dashboards to visualize relationship performance to specific objectives. I also needed a real plan to build this out where we have nothing in place to measure our suppliers. I read at least 5 or 7 texts on this topic. Martin's done the clearest work on how to design metrics for a function or relationship from an IMPLEMENTATION perspective. I used his method to sharpen up our dashboard content and lay out a logic of WHY we were measuring. I am confident I could walk into any of our supplier relationships and engage my team in a productive exercise to frame appropriate measures or Ops and Leadership teams. I will also use his "Answer Key" as a quick start to managing our group performance. An indispensable leading work in the part of sourcing (buying complex stuff) that always gets left out of decision making and initial contract implementations.

Metrics isn't a topic people generally get excited about, and it fills some with apprehension. Klubeck makes the topic approachable in this book using an engaging, easy to understand narrative that guides the reader through the process of crafting - yes, crafting - good metrics. And, most importantly, you don't start with the data as we've mostly been conditioned to do. We began having meaningful conversations about metrics as a result of using Klubeck's book.Before you drown yourself with details about data and collection methods, do yourself a favor and educate yourself on this approach. You'll be glad you did.

In reading “Metrics: How to Improve Key Business Results” you will build a process on how to think about the Real Question. Having the Root Question as the starting point, rather than the data points, is essential. The analogy used in the book is that of building a house. You would not begin by gathering the nails. The book demonstrates how silly this technique would be. It is necessary to begin with the vision of the house first. This vision will lead to the foundation (the shape of the root question) through stages that eventually lead to the nails. The nails are the final touches. If you start with the final touches you will never build your house! The book gives clear examples of how to begin with the root question (foundation) and be sure the question is the foundation and not the measurements (drywall). These examples will start you thinking in a whole different way; a more strategic thought process.In addition the author remembers that gathering of measurements can provoke fear in staff. Letting staff know what it will and will not be used for helps avoid mistrust, fear, and unintended consequences. Work with your staff. They will help provide the best way to measure!I highly recommend this book and this way of thinking to improve key business results. Start with chapters 1 through 4 to begin developing your business’s health report!

The author has really shown a realistic approach and understanding towards applying metrics in your organization. The "real life" examples and entertaining stories are a great method towards gaining a much clearer and better understanding towards this area. This book is for readers of any and all backgrounds. Regardless if you are a neophyte or seasoned veteran, there is much knowledge to gain from within the binds of this book. The other benefit is that you can actually contact the author if you have any comments or questions, a true blessing in disguise. Marty has been able to capture the thoughts and feelings that I have wanted to express throughout my career, kudos to him for the time and passion he has applied towards this very important area.

There are very few books written about measuring and more comprehensively business metrics. I am fortunate that this is the one I chose to read first because it is written very clearly and the author uses many stories to keep the reader interested and illustrate his points.The key point Mr. Klubeck wants to make is that metrics is not about measuring random items; metrics is about answering a business question by locating the information and data within the organization.Karen L. The author put a lot of thought into the making of this book. Every sentence seems to flow in a logical order and anticipate questions by the reader -- me.I hope that readers of this review take my review seriously. I'm always skeptical of reviews. But, I don't know the author and do not benefit from this post. That said, if you want to understand the concept of metrics and best practices on their implementation then buy this book.

This should be the first book you read if you have been handed the job of creating a metrics program for your organization. Martin takes a very confusing and difficult task and breaks it down into plain language to where anyone can understand it. I love the analogies and how he sums up the chapters and even adds additional clarifications to make specific points clear.

This is a fantastic book. It moves smoothly from the foundational principles of any functional metrics program into very specific examples and guidelines for imagining and implementing your own.
