Kemp's approach to the study of Leonardo offers a unique and insightful perspective into the man, that I haven't found elsewhere. When I've looked at some of Leonardo's works I have wanted to know what and how he saw, and then processed, the world around him. Kemp's delving into those creative processes, whether artistic, scientific or in his note-writing, gives me a better idea of how the artist accomplished all he did. In fact, Kemp's approach to Leonardo is a bit like Leonardo's approach to his creations. A well-written read for those who want to better understand how Da Vinci worked.

I was looking forward to this book based on Professor Kemp's reputation and some of the glowing reviews this book has received.Unfortunately I tend to agree with what another reviewer described as Kemp's "not fluid" writing style. I would add that I found the book a "dry" read, almost technically put together, in an academic sense. It reminds me of a college textbook.I do not for one minute doubt Kemp's credentials and knowledge of the subject.Where he failed is to recreate, as every good biographer should, the nuances of the subject's personality and effect of his surroundings on him and vice versa.Kemp goes into much technical detail about what he perceives as Leonardo's approach and philosophy, exhaustively details his various surviving works, but provides far too little in terms of what a biography should be; it fails to recreate in the reader's mind Leonardo's world, interactions, passion and the aura of the great Leonardo da Vinci. It gets to the point where I get the feeling Leonardo was a prolific machine, not a passionate artist.5 stars for Kemp's effort minus three for failing to do Leonardo justice.

Just a fair biography. Too much emphasis on how he earned money. Didn’t delve into his personality as I expected.

Thought I was getting a biography. This is more about Leonardo's methodology than a biography of his life. A good book but not what I expected.

Great book overall, and very easy to understand compared to other art history books I've read. The book also feels very nice, kind of like a thick magazine of sorts. Definitely worth buying and very informative about how Leonardo thought.

Its not an easy read, very technical and dry

This is an excellent historical biography on Leonardo da Vinci. The book is solid facts one after another, mostly taken from surviving documents such as financial transactions and Leonardo's notebooks. The downside is that if you are reading this book for the sake of reading a good book, it can be a tad boring. The writing style is not fluid, perhaps a little choppy at times, since it is so fact-oriented. If you want to know the cold hard facts about Leonardo, this is the book for you (like for a research project). If you are looking for a good read that is a little more subjective you might not like it as much.

But above any other evaluation or positive point I could surely add, let me just point out the fundamental theological and psychological core of all the book: starting from the biblical affirmation of 1 John, 4 that God is love, the author develops the concepts that everything God works is an expression of this covenant established between him and the whole creation, including the mankind. In the freedom granted to the human being God dies and rises with us, in the ontological affirmation of every action, even in our blasphemy and I dare to say that God in his full love enchains himself to us till the full communion. Nevertheless the very core of this theological book is the consequences that the author, Moltmann, pulls from the nature of God as love. Deciding to share his love, God accepts to share la suffering always connected with love, because of rejection, indifference, treachery. This new vision about God reverses completely the concept of God as a judge, as a chasing divinity waiting for our fall in order to chastise and eventually presents a God who out of love and fidelity dies with Christ on the cross, killed by the hatred of the religious law and the political power.It is a book of course for religious ministers, theologians and philosophers or general people searching for a beyond of the logic.I would recommend such a book to people, which according to Zigmunt Baumann try to overwhelm the liquid society for an identity of novelty and fullness.

Jurgen Moltmann offers an eclectic approach to Trinitarian theology: examine the nature of the Trinity through the cipher of the Suffering God--and his project is largely a failure. He begins the narrative with what one assumes is his earlier argument on divine possibility. At this point J.M. jettisons the historic Christian teaching on the topic. While I understand his wanting to take the problem of evil and suffering seriously, it appears he sells the farm in the process. Further, it is not clear how he can avoid Slavoj Zizek's critique that divine possibility leads to the death of God (Zizek, Monstrosity, 260ff). Ironically, his discussion on the Trinity in church history is quite good (the irony is that he largely rejects or modifies these formulations). I really like how he identifies the "kingdom" with "the kingdom of the Father." We approach God first as Father, not first as Lord or Creator. If God is seen primarily as "Lord" or "Creator," and we accept the premise that God is eternal, then God is thus eternally Lord or Creator. This means he must be Lord and Creator over something or someone. Ergo, Origen's heresy. Unfortunately, J.M. completely negates that crucial point at the end of the book in his chapter on political monotheism. By that phrase he means any system that reduces God to "the One." Aside from bad terminology, J.M. actually has a point. He gives a decent critique of Islam and some forms of medieval Trinitarianism. (Ironically it also functions as a critique of Judaism, but since J.M. is a Zionist, he doesn't apply the critique). His real enemy, though, is patriarchy. J.M. rejects the idea that someone can have any form of priority over someone else (unless, presumably, it is women over men. No doubt that is acceptable). His proposal is some form of democractic egalitarianism in the Trinity. In response to this, though, we must ask how his above argument does not contradict both the definition of Fatherhood and his earlier argument for the Kingdom of the Father? By anyone's definition Father means the cause (at least on some level) of the Son (of course, I don't mean cause in a temporal fashion; just logical). He has a good take on the Filioque (though, it should be strongly noted, J.M. rejects any form of Eastern Orthodox Trinitarianism; see his earlier reticence about Father and "cause"). He notes that positing the Son as a co-cause of the Spirit alongside the Father mutes the hypostatic characteristics of both Father and Son. Likewise, positing the Son as a separate cause is polytheism. J.M. argues, therefore, that the Spirit proceeds from the Father of the Son and even from the aesthetic form of the Son (admittedly, it's difficult to know what he means by that last phrase).Conclusion:This book is important in one respect: it signaled the birth of the "social Trinitarian" movement. One suspects, though, that J.M.'s version of social trinitarianism is actually fueled by an agenda for radical egalitarianism.

I am a fan of Moltmann. Love his work and will be buying more of his output as soon as I can. Up to my ears with assignments on the Trinity and Creation just now though.

Moltmann provides the most helpful and easiest-to-comprehend explanation of the Christian Trinity that I have ever read. He helpfully frames the necessity of understanding God as longing for relationship, a community in the heart of the very being of God. Moltmann rejects both the un-biblical notion of God as a pseudo-Greek static being, and the post-Enlightenment view of God as the ultimate personalized individual. Instead, he uses biblical references and clear and logical thinking to demonstrate the importance of God’s vital existence as passionate love for the Other and its ethical implications for Christian living. Far from being and abstract and unnecessary logical experiment, God’s existence as Trinity calls us to be in loving connection with other humans, the world, and with God in Christ.There are myriad concepts and quotes to pull out of this book, but two in particular struck me as useful and innovative. First, Moltmann repeatedly insists that all discussion of God must include Christ and the Spirit in a Trinitarian framework. That is, we cannot start with God as an unmoved mover or primal cause; we know God through Christ, and we cannot say anything about God that we would not say about Christ. Moltmann puts it this way in his chapter “The Mystery of the Trinity”: “Strict monotheism obliges us to think of God without Christ, and consequently to think of Christ without God as well. The questions whether God exists and how one can be a Christian then become two unrelated questions. But if on the other hand Trinitarian dogma maintains the unity of essence between Christ and God, then not only is Christ understood in divine terms; God is also understood in Christian ones. The intention and consequence of the doctrine of the Trinity is not only the deification of Christ; it is even more the Christianization of the concept of God. God cannot be comprehended without Christ, and Christ cannot be understood without God.” (131-2)To do otherwise reinforces patriarchal oppression or makes God an abstract idea with whom we do not need to engage.Secondly, Moltmann (ahead of his time in many respects) challenges the latter patriarchy through biblical exegesis and passionate care for the poor. If God is working through Christ and the Holy Spirit to save the world, we are responsible as adopted children to engage in that same salvific work. Picturing God as the monotheistic conqueror on the throne directly contradicts the relational passion of Trinitarian faith. Moltmann provocatively puts it this way: “If the Son proceeded from the Father alone, then this has to be conceived of both as a begetting and a birth. And this means a radical transformation of the Father image; a father who both begats and bears his son is not merely a father in the male sense. He is a motherly father too. He is no longer defined in unisexual, patriarchal terms but – if we allow for the metaphor of language – bisexually or transexually….Whatever may be said about God’s gynecology according to this explanation, the point of these bisexual statements about the Trinitarian Father is the radical rejection of monotheism, which is always patriarchal.” (165)Moltmann is generally quite readable but takes some time to wade through given the careful construction of his thought. Give yourself plenty of time to engage this text and you will come out understanding the Trinity in ways you probably thought impossible. Recommended especially for pastors and theological graduate school students, as well as professional theologians who didn’t (like myself) have all this Trinity stuff quite worked out.

This is an excellent book, but I purchased the Kindle version. Graphics in this version are mediocre, as if we just got the internet working. Amazon needs to do a better job of checking Kindle versions and a standard of some kind has to be maintained. Buy the hardcopy and you won't think that you suddenly have developed double vision AND cataracts at the same time.

There is no doubt that the author, Maurice Hamilton, made a great effort to produce a technical book about the finer points of using Photoshop to produce black and white images. It is technical and 'dry', and a hard slog. He explains (at length) some of the detailed procedures, tips and methodology which go to making fine prints. But, the book made me think of some of the Hollywood epics where the idea is grand but the director and the editor let the cast down. I don't care for the high price-low quality production of the book, either. Not that worthy and informational books must be slick and glossy; but for me they must be attractive and 'feel' good. I will keep this book in my reference library, but I do not count it in my '20 best photography books' list!

Film photographers have long savored black-and-white photography for its stark alternative to realism, and the stripped down, minimalistic approach to creating an image. Digital photography threatened to push black-and-white photography to extinction, but, thankfully, artists like Hamilton have preserved the spirit of the medium and extended it through the use of Adobe's flagship image editor.The author shows you the proper way to create monochrome images while preserving -- or enhancing tonality. He explains that a good black-and-white image isn't simply a color image that's been desaturated. I also liked the exploration into reproducing traditional darkroom techniques in Photoshop. This is a must-have book for any serious black-and-white worker.

I am amazed at the audacity of a "reviewer" who has not even read the book to offer an opinion based on an online perusal of the table of contents. Such a cursory effort deserves similar attention to his/her opinion.Hamilton's book is a superb guide for a photographer who wants to learn digital techniques to enhance the original image and to transform color images to beautiful black and white photographs. His writing style is lucid and succinct but not boring. His instructions are comprehensive, almost as if he is looking over your shoulder guiding you through each step.What I found most useful was his ability to explain in simple and clear terms how to apply curves and levels, adjust highlights/shadows, and to use dodge and burn techniques. His methods for converting a color image to black and white range from simple to complex. The chapter on colorizing techniques applied to black and white images provided interesting demonstrations of achieving sepia-like images and utilizing black/white conversion filters. Images supplementing the instructions were small but adequate to clarify the text. I have applied some of his techniques to my color photographs, producing black and white images I was very pleased with and proud of. This book is a wonderful and inexpensive instructional guide for photographers who want to improve their Black and White photographs.

I consider this book to be in a class with the best books written on photography.I especially appreciate the Ansel Adams quote and the way that Maurice Hamilton lets his own gallery speak for itself. The emphasis is not on showing off his own work but rather, on helping the reader advance their own art. This book is loaded with lots of great technical information on the creation of a quality black& white image. Although there are not a lot of images throughout the text does close with some great black & white photos.Everything you would want to know about black & white (and a few things you probably didn't need to know) are in this book. I would highly recommend it.

This is a wonderful book. Expecially for honing your skills. It does an in depth study on the histogram and how to cope with it. I wasn't born in the computer age and this book tells its story in an understandable manner. I enjoyed it very muchI write Travel Photography books and will use what I learned as well as making black and white prints. Hope to have my books listed on Amazon. Book is great. Such a fun RPG. My buddies and I have a great time running this system.

This book gives a focus more on story than game mechanics. For those players that like the futuristic cyberpunk world mixed with magic and fantasy races, but don't like Shadowrun's heavy dice-rolling 'test' system, should look into Anarchy. It's much more streamlined than 'hardcore' Shadowrun is!!

I have been a big fan of Shadowrun since third edition, though I've never really ran any game that went more than two sessions. I've also purchased the fourth and fifth editions of the book, and have a lot of the supplements in between. I have to say that this version might be my favorite, but there are some things to consider:-This book is light on crunch; if you like that (like a lot of my friends do), then it may be a turn off.-This book is poorly organized; it took awhile to figure out where stuff was, but once you did it wasn't hard to get through.-There's not a lot in the book, at least compared to other core editions.That being said, I think it's all you need to run pretty exciting games of Shadowrun. You won't be bogged down with a 100-page grimoire of spells, or 5.99999999 essence points of cyberware and bioware, but you do get the feel of the game with what's in there, and there's easy enough rules to follow when converting anything that's been left out of the book.As the GM for our group, it was very easy to run the game. I recommend it if you want to run a game of Shadowrun and don't want to put in homework.

Book looks great and it's short, which is a plus considering Shadowrun's history of having separate mechanics for every single skill. Can't wait to read it.

I liked the regular 5th edition better; things were clearer-cut and more accurate.

A really fun way to play Shadowrun, if a little light on specifics (which I believe is the intent). My friends and I have been playing this version for a year and a half or so (I think?) and have loved it. Much easier for newcomers to get into.

After Sophia was diagnosed with food allergies, I began to cook allergy-free for our family. I bought several cookbooks, and read several others, and could not find anything that met my needs. I began creating my own recipes, and people (without allergies!) started asking me for my recipes. My husband said, "You should write a cookbook!" and so I did.

I've had this cookbook for a little over a month and have used it almost daily! I love that it has a full range of baked goods and meals in the same book.I have been dairy free for years, but recently had to cut a multitude of additional foods from my diet, including gluten, soy, eggs, nuts and more, and this book has been a life saver!I find most the recipes in this book are faster and easier to make than those in other allergy friendly cookbooks I have (including "allergy free and easy cooking"). The simplicity of the recipes also makes it easier for me to avoid the additional foods I'm sensitive to.

I recently was diagnosed with EOE and placed on an elimination diet. It is daunting to find recipies which I can eat, that don't take forever with ingredients that are hard to find. This cookbook has simple recipes that taste great and have made this dietary transition bearable. Thank you!

Both of my children (2 and 4) have wheat and dairy allergies, so I am always on the lookout for new recipes for them. I consider myself a good cook but these recipes are well within the reach of a beginner who finds themselves cooking out of necessity because of new-found allergies.This book is among my favorites because the recipes are both accessible (containing a handful of easy to find ingredients) and child friendly. I have many other gluten free cookbooks but this is the one I reach for most often because we have yet to try a recipe that fails to please.Oats are a common ingredient in the book as another reviewer noted but there are gluten free oats available. My daughter has gluten reactions to the basic quaker oats but we have used Bob's Red Mill (available here on amazon) with no problems at all.

I have a 2 year old who is allergic to dairy, eggs, soy, wheat, shellfish and nuts so I feel that this book was written especially for us. I have a pile of cookbooks for her but this is the only one that stays on my counter in my cookbook holder. The best part of this cookbook is that it uses everyday ingredients that I have at home. This enables me to make her something on the fly. Yesterday was the Cinammon Applesauce cake. I had every ingredient and it was so easy. My daughter also loves the meatloaf (I added garlic and gluten free bread crumbs to the recipe and removed the red pepper), chicken tenders (which I make with either corn flake crumbs or gluten free bread crumbs instead of potato chips). My next item to try is the chocolate cake. Oh, and let me tell you how amazing the fudge brownies are!!! Those get 5 stars alone. Even my 4 1/2 year old who is the pickiest eater with no allergies eats everything I cook from here. The main substitutions that the author has made are oat flour instead of wheat flour (and I send her my compliments for informing the readers how to make oat flour at home to save the cost of buying it - huge hit), rice milk over cow's milk and cocoa powder instead of chocolate. The one thing that is in some recipes is butter or margarine but I use an equal amount of palm oil shortening.For anyone with a food allergy (adult or child) this book will be your bible since it covers all the big allergens out there. I cannot recommend this book highly enough as I feel it has opened up so many windows for my daughter for foods that were previously banned from her diet (like brownies and cake that was not the weight of a brick).

Love it! This recipe book uses simple ingredients and simple recipes. With my daughter just being diagnosed with wheat, dairy, and egg allergies, we were very discouraged when we looked up any recipes. They all had twenty ingredients, most of which I couldn't find without driving an hour and a half. Then I ordered Sophie-Safe Cooking. This cookbook uses ingredients that are easy to find and the recipes are things that my kids would actually eat. I would recommend this so everyone who has a child with food allergies!

As a single mom of a toddler, I need recipes that are fast, inexpensive, delicious...and definitely kid-friendly for my food-allergic daughter! this little book fits the bill quite nicely. Most of the recipes I've tried are quite good (can't tell you how excited I was to see the cranberry bread actually rising in the oven and then it was light in texture, almost just like wheat!). Some of them need a little tweaking, usually just a little more sugar added to be as sweet as I like, but what the hey - they are still pretty good the way they are and I would much rather be getting creative in my cooking to meet my specific tastes than experimenting with ingredient substitutes just to make a recipe work at all! For a family dealing with multiple food allergies, this should be a staple!

This is a good starting point when you have a new diagnosis of food allergies. There is nothing new or earth shattering in this book by way of recipe, but it helps you feel like, oh, there are foods we can still eat and it gives you some very easy ideas for times when you just cannot think of what to eat.I think it is somewhat limited though, and will not work as your only food allergy cookbook resource.
