I'm new to Traveller and when my game master introduced our new game, I wanted to learn about the setting of the Spinward Marches. This book gives all kinds of background information for the game (but does not include character-building information). I now do really have a feel for the Spinward Marches and how the cultures, philosophies, and economics work in this setting. My GM helped with the character building so I'm off and running,

This edition of the Spinward Marches contains valuable information of the system and politics of this era of human history. There is sufficient detail to enable a competent GM to run a smooth game without having to fill in yawning gaps in knowledge.

Decent book, but the Traveller wiki tends to have more information and is easier accessed around the table with a tablet than this book is.

The Spinward Marches offer untold adventure for those willing to seek it out.'This is a complete campaign sourcebook for The Spinward Marches and the general ideas is that it's an area of space where pretty much anything goes... you can keep your political wrangling, your feuding houses and your squabbling feudal worlds; out here, on the edges of `civilisation', is where the money and the adventure is.THE BOOKTo be used in conjunction with Mongoose's `Traveller' core rulebook, The Third Imperium - The Spinward Marches is a 142 page softback book with full colour covers and a black and white interior, with greyscale artwork and an easy to read font.The presentation is very good but the one area that lets it down is the artwork; there are some nice images in here but some of the art simply doesn't suit the setting at all. There's one thing that pulls me into a game world and that's the artwork as it gives a visual representation of what the world is like. It's easy enough to ignore the art - and heaven knows I've done that with a lot of books - but incompatible art can affect how a work is perceived. The full colour cover, a mixed race crew standing around a starport as a starship touches down behind them, is excellent and is much more inkeeping with the style of the setting.THE CONTENTSThe book is laid in several chapters.First of all there's the Introduction, which covers the concepts of the book and how it can be used with existing game worlds. There's a nice section on the different Traveller Universes; Official Traveller Universe (OUT), My Traveller Universe (MTU) and Your Traveller Universe (YTU). It's basically telling the reader not to worry about canon or continuity. Once you get this book, it's yours and nobody can tell you how to run the game, which also means this book can be used with any previously compatible Traveller games or settings and you shouldn't worry about contradiction or inaccuracies. It goes on to talk about space and how to navigate it, travel, trade and the standard Traveller intelligent species. This is all a primer to set you up for the next chapter.The next section, The Third Imperium, covers the history of the galaxy and explains the rise and fall of the first two Imperiums, all the way up to how the Imperium stands today, the law, the worlds, and the megacorporations. It also goes into detail about the noble families, the houses, the military and religion, which is a great source of ideas for characters and adventures.The Spinward Marches chapter goes into detail about the area of space where the games will take place in, and gives you a rough outline about the area and it's history and the states that rule there. There's a lot of useful information here, especially on how the Imperium interacts with the Spinward Marches and the attitudes of the races that live there. If you've been GMing games nearer the heart of the Imperium and fancy a change of scenery, pace and attitude then this is the place to go.The chapter on Subsectors of the Spinward Marches is 66 pages of details on the sectors of the Marches and their worlds, with hexagonal charts to position and map the locations. There are 16 subsectors in total, each with it's own history and averaging about 20 systems each, two of which are detailed; that's a lot of exploring to do! The worlds are given very brief statistics and it's up to the GM to fill in the details, but there's plenty of places to visit.The next chapter Adventuring in the Spinward Marches gives you plenty of ideas on types of games you can run; how to use locations as adventure settings, hazards and problems the adventurers might face, current events that might spark adventure hooks, and possible jumping-off points; war, trade, intrigue, mysteries, exploration, colonisation... there are no definitive hooks or story ideas, but there are plenty of pointers.The book is rounded out with a much-needed index.CONCLUSIONThis is a fine book with plenty of information on the pages to fill out an existing Third Imperium campaign or begin an entire new campaign from scratch. The text gives plenty of inspiration and although the writing doesn't specifically detail adventure hooks, ideas or stories, it does contain a lot of flavour and will no doubt spark the imagination of a Traveller GM.The book itself needn't be used just for the Traveller system; although it is geared towards the core rulebook there are no definitive statistics in here that would stop you from using it with another gaming system, other than the finer details of the sector maps.Something I would have liked to see is an adventure. A campaign book like this is great for explaining how the setting works but it's also nice to be shown, and as the Traveller core rulebook had no adventure included it would have been nice to have had one in here; after all, one of the first things a group purchases after buying core rules is a campaign setting and this would have been the perfect place for an introductory adventure.In spite of the unsuitable artwork and the lack of definitive adventure ideas, this is good book with great ideas and I can see a gaming group getting many sessions of use out of it. Recommended.

I"ve been a roleplayer since the start of D&D, but never tried Traveller until now. Well, the Spindward Marches is a highlevel view of this famous area of space. It's not massively detailed, but well worth a read as a source of some ideas.

So I got the book at my local game shop (they special ordered it for me) and I instantly began reading up on the Spinward Marches. Now I'm a new fan to Traveller and mongoose is the only edition I've bought so far (though GURPS is at my local store and I might start collecting it). So far I love the OTU and the Spinward Marches is considered the starting point for any new player.Now the book itself is well writen and set up nicely. The intro gives you a strong idea of key elements within the Traveller Universe (TU). Within the first 10 pages you will learn a lot and most of the book is subsector maps mixed in with world descriptions and history of the region, a lot of what you'd expect. So the writing gets all five stars in my opinion. Now why then did I put it up for four stars? Because sadly the artwork isn't up to par with what you'd expect from a $30.00+ RPG book. Honestly some parts of the artwork, though good are just plane amature. I went to art school myself for a year and a half and I learned many of the basic elements of drawing. Some of the art towards the back of the book looks like a first year art students work. Its not bad its just under developed.However no RPG pen and paper fan should judge a book by its art but rather by its content and mongoose traveller is packed with good content. If you have a strong imagination then the art shouldn't hold you back and I only subtracted a star because older edditions of the Traveller series have had some truely wonderful artwork in them. Overall if you're a new traveller fan then pick up Spinward Marches. Its a solid and well writen section of the OTU for you and your friends to play around in.

This was sold as a hardback book. It is a soft back book and not what was ordered or wanted.

Mongoose's Spinward Marches is a worthy addition to the Canon if the Traveller Universe. No new info for the long-time fans, but a wealth of info none the less. For those new to the universe, this is a wealth of data and essays to start off a campaign.Thanks Mongoose!

Myth No. 2 "Chocolate is fattening." A crucial factor has been overlooked in this widespread condemnation of chocolate: Most chocolate eaters tend to supplement their chocolate intake with other foods. By what right, what logic can chocolate be singled out as the cause of plumpness? How can we be certain that, say, carrots are not a catalyst of weight-gain when chocolate is present? And there is empirical evidence that also raises serious doubts about chocolate's fatteningness: Few chocolate lovers can simply lie back and wait for chocolate to come to them. For most, getting and keeping chocolate often requires strenuous physical work. Myth No. 5 "Chocolate is nothing more than a substitute for affection." Much has been made lately of the recent scientific finding that there is a chemical in chocolate-phenylethylamine-that is virtually identical to the substance manufactured by the brain of the infatuated individual. In various studies of the phenomenon, the conclusion drawn is that chocolate obsession is in fact self-medication for the spurned lover. He or she is trying to synthesize the "high" of being in love. As is too often the case with these social scientists, they are taking sound, highly suggestive data and drawing empirically absurd conclusions. What reasonable soul prefers romance to truffles? I love Boynton's work, and somewhere have the original 1982 edition of this book of hers.But this one is better! She says the drawing have been redone, and the text is longer and modernized.It is still silly fun, all about chocolate, with some informative interludes.Recommended for Boynton fans, and for whimsical chocolate lovers.

My siblings and I grew up on the first book, and those illustrations are burned into my childhood memory. Even before I was old enough (or had enough control of ADHD) to follow the actual text, I was learning about chocolate through the fun drawings and cartoons alone.My mother follows Sandra Boynton on Facebook, and one day she decided to contact the family to see if they'd be coming out with an update. She was excited when she was told that this current update was actually already underway, and proceeded to follow the publishing until it came out.The update has not disappointed. Its every bit as fun as the original, with some extra fun added in with further updates that Boynton did in her research. This is a well researched book, and shares that research in the most humorous way possible for chocoholics. I'm a big fan of both chocolate and humor, so this book deserved a cover-to-cover read through several times. I found myself blasting back to my childhood, looking at drawings of hippos and pigs and turkeys eating a variety of brown colored blobs, or spouting random sentences and facts about my favorite treat.This is a must-have if you've ever been even slightly curious about chocolate.

Sandra Boynton manages to roll "charming," "informative," and "hysterical" into one big chocolate delight. I love how she can show so much of what her characters are thinking just by the way she draws their eyes. I don't how you learn to communicate with such simple lines, but she nails it every time.Bought one for myself and two copies as gifts. I may yet be buying more.

Sandra Boyton isn't just for kids!This a fun and fabulous book about chocolate.As always the illustrations are whimsical and adorable.It has ideas, humor, history, and information all about chocolate. I bought this book as a present for my nephew, having enjoyed it decades ago. Thank goodness I had it sent straight to me instead of straight to him. It’s been changed to be less funny. I know it’s supposed to be an improvement, but the original edition is funnier. So I returned it and bought him a like-new older edition.

Sandra Boynton delighted me once again. Chocolate is a personal favorite treat and Ms Boynton has always been able to tap into that fondness noted in other of her works. Not only as a chocophile can I relate, but you can actually learn some things about chocolate making and have a few laughs along the way.

I am so delighted that Sandra Boynton has recreated Chocolate: The Consuming Passion, and she has done a lovely job. I have to admit, it has been a very long time since I have purchased a printed book (and I work in the printing industry!) But this one you definitely need in print. The only thing that could make it better is if it were scratch and sniff. It would either help me cut back on my chocolate consumption or make me want more! Anyone who has any interest in chocolate at all, or knows someone who does, should get this lovely, informative and fun book. Great holiday gift!

The book is a hoot! Five stars. However the first copy I received (from used book seller ) was in poor condition, missing first 15 pages. They replaced for free. Second copy in better shape but had a strong perfume smell. I had to keep in the garage for a few weeks till it mostly wore off because of my wife's allergies. However finally did get to bring it in and enjoy reading it. I think Sandra Boynton mostly writes children's books but this one is more for an adult audience.

I read The Flame and the Flower when it was released in 1972. At the time, I had one child, almost two years old. I stayed up all night reading it while my husband worked on midnight shift. I just couldn't put it down. I was twenty-two years old. I have reread that book at least four times over the years. The Wolf and the Dove is my second book by Kathleen E Woodiwiss. My life didn't leave much time for this genre. Now at sixty-seven, I read The Wolf and the Dove on my Kindle because of the name of the main character, Aislinn. My oldest granddaughter, twenty-two, was named after this English Lady in the book, by her mother. Not many girls with this name. Three children, eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter later, I am going to read all of Ms. Woodiwiss' books. Why? Why not

The first few chapters were very hard to get through, because they described a lot of domination and brutality. It was hard to read how the Normans and Vikings treated these women and innocent servants. I'm not a big fan of rape in romance novels (although I seem to remember it being popular in the 70's) but it is historically accurate. I didn't like Wulfgar forcing the heroine to have sex with him. It was very difficult for me to like him after that. He treats her so badly that it's abusive, and I didn't warm up to him until towards the late middle of the story.There's a lot of melodrama in this novel. At times Aislinn seems bi-polar, swinging back and forth between rage and happiness within one scene. Her mother acts so hysterical and goofy she's unbelievable. The female villains are horrible but it was kind of fun reading about them.The language the author uses is meant to sound medieval, and at times it was hard to follow what the characters were saying. It got a little formal and flowery at times, and slowed the story down for me.There is a real romance in there! I did warm up towards Wulfgar. The characters did seem more believable and sympathetic towards the middle of the story. Towards the late middle to the end I could not put it down.

WOW, what an enjoyable read!! If you love historical romance at its finest, this is a novel to read. I couldn't put it down and was up 36hrs straight, having to read a bit at a time!! In this novel I NEVER once got bored even though it is a long read. I loved the characters, all of them, good and evil alike. Great twists and turns from start to finish with a surprising last ending chapters. This was a book that when finished reading, I could not stop smiling.....now THATS a GOOD read!! Enjoy!! Note this is NOT a clean read and rape is depicted as per era.

I read this years ago and decided to go back and read it again now. It was as good as I remembered despite the tricky start. It's a typical bodice ripper with rape scenes at the beginning but if you get past that and make allowances for the times it was written in, the second half of the book is great. Your heart breaks for the h and what she had to go through to get to her hea. The H was a product of the times he lived in. Violence and conquering was his go to mode. He didn't believe women were good for much but the love of a good women eventually got through to him.Update 16/03/18: For whatever reason I thought of this book today and the theme I remembered was the h wanting the H to marry her. I loved it despite the "bodice ripper" theme.

I've actually read this book many times but revisit it occasionally just like an old friend! I'm such a fan of Katheen Woodiwiss books and re-read all of them periodically! Her books capture you interest immediately and hold your attention throughout each book! I have found that Michelle Willingham's books are very similar in that aspect and greatly appreciate her writing talents as well!

After I read this book, Kathleen became one of my many favorite authors. I found out the more of her books read, the more I liked the way she wrote. Therefore becoming my favorite author. I believe I have every book she wrote.I still love the Wolf and the Dove the best. I will re-read good books all the time. I wore out the first book and bought another one to replace the first one. When I started reading e books, I bought still another for my e book library.Kathleen brings her people to life. Telling a story that all the bad things that happen to her. That she got the best in the end. A good lesson in life, by not complaining what goes wrong in life. Not telling about the little hurts others do to you. Doing the best you can, when all is going bad. She came out on top getting all the good things in life..........Cheri

I have a very old copy of this book that my grandmother gave me. In, I believe, 2004 Kathleen was at a signing for her newest book at a local Walmart. I taped up the old tattered copy and went to ask her to sign it. I truly treasure it. I have not read it in maybe some 15 odd years, and decided to purchase it to read on my I phone as I'm always busy. I fell in love again with this story!!! I love that it is not just typical romance but has beautifully written battle scenes, and can wring your heart with the true emotions of humanity. She weaves a world so bright and real, you almost get lost in it....10 stars if they had them....

The book contains many, many questions and pretty good explanations for each question. Some of the explanations may be a bit confusing to understand. There are no lessons in between each test. The graphs and figures can sometimes be very difficult to understand. The level of the questions are a mixture of hard and easy. Some of the passages can be uninteresting and you may become unfocused.
