This is a new translation of al-Ghazali's "Al Munqid," which is essentially his intellectual autobiography. The interesting thing about this book is that it essentially parallels Descartes' "Discourse on Method" centuries before Descartes wrote it. Al-Ghazali actually experienced a crisis of faith, while Descartes did not; he simply intellectualized one, and followed the steps that he thought he would take in order to achieve a universal doubt -- concluding with the famous "I think, [therefore] I am." This, then, becomes the fundamental rock-solid principle on which he can build a system of knowledge. Al-Ghazali also gives his conclusion a religious tinge which it does not have in the formulation of Descartes. But basically the processes are the same. And it is not at all proven that Descartes had read al-Ghazali's book, though he had apparently read al-Ghazali's treatise on logic, which had been translated. Descartes' "I think, [therefore] I am" had, of course, been formulated by St. Augustine, one thousand years before. Augustine had imagined that someone argued against him, "What if you are mistaken?" And he had answered, "If I am mistaken, I am; for he who is not cannot be mistaken." This is essentially what Descartes said. So this new translations makes available al-Ghazali's book in an inexpensive edition, and this is a good thing.

I love Ghazali and find his writing (paired with this particular translation's style) incredibly exciting to read. His insight and systematization of thought and differing opinions is very useful. Much of this book works as a short autobiographical work. As well, as a non-Muslim and someone not qualified as a scholar of Islamic theology (especially not historically), this work introduced me to lots of new and specialized terms important for both orthodox and heterodox Islamic theology (particularly in the Medieval/Scholastic era).Of course I beg forgiveness if I say anything not worthy of respect in regards to this wonderful man. The only thing missing in the work is a sense that the author never offers a fully workable answer to his own inquiries. Instead, one enjoys seeing his questioning, his experimentation and exploration, and then the fact that he finds sufficient reason for his own answers. His answers, however, are insufficient outside the realm of subjective conviction (not belief, but conviction). Instead of a well worked philosophical answer, he provides his account of an experience of illumination, fully acceptable within mystical thought but not within theological inquiry.All in all I give the book a 5/5 for many reasons. It is more than worth the read and at the end you will almost certainly want to read and study it more in depth. It is inspiring as well to the mystic who has unresolved questions of religious import. Read it and see for yourself :)!

This is an excellent, concise guide that is still highly relevant today. Although coming after Al-Ghazali's other works, it seems like a very good introduction as it places his thoughts in firm relation to other schools of thought of the day. Interestingly, you can directly see the descendants of those schools still arguing over the same issues and suffering from the same complaints he raises.The only problem I have with this book (and the reason for only 4 stars) is that the original translation seems to have been part of a much larger text, and there are references here to things that are missing. One thing that is wonderful about McCarthy's translation is the very detailed and scholarly notes. They use an abbreviated bibliography where sources are referenced to things like M 74 or JC 63, but the detailed annotated bibliography which explains these mysterious references is not included. There are references to other notes and details which are not included.

Great book, and very enjoyable.However a word of caution, this edition only contains The Deliverance from Error (al-Munqidh min al-Dalal) ie his short autobiography. It does NOT contain the five key texts. If you want it to include the five key texts, it appears that you have to get the other edition with the same name. Look at the table of contents to verify that it has what you want. The other edition is about 200 pages longer and has those five texts.

I hadn't read any Al Ghazali texts until this one. I bought it because I was interested in a man who heavily influenced the Muslim religion. This book did not disappoint.

Difficult subject to fully understand since it was writen more than one thousand years ago but the essence of the ideas and the messages to be conveyed in this book are still valid for everyone who keens to learn the essential soul of Islam.

Needed for a class and came quickly. Weird sticky stuff on it but it didn't bother me.

This book is suitable for someone straight out of college or very new to the workforce considering the path of entrepreneurship.

Start a Successful Business was written by the reporters of Inc. magazine and published by the American Management Association. It clearly states the steps needed to start a new business. Beginning with the big idea moving through business strategy and structure, the book's instructions are clear and concise. It gives options for funding sources, customer acquisition, marketing, management, and growth strategies. Start a Successful Business includes research studies and interviews with Inc. magazine's top entrepreneurs. It is filled with real life examples of how successful entrepreneurs solved their initial problems.Start a Successful Business will motivate and educate people unfamiliar with how new businesses are started and made successful. For those with a class or two in business, this may be too simple an overview. Later sections on marketing and customer acquisition only skim the surface of each topic. However, the book does include good references to books or websites for more in depth study.Overall, I was expecting more, and probably too much, from the authors of Inc. magazine. It is strictly for people who want to start a new business but have no idea how to do it. For those readers, it is highly recommended. For all others, it seems like a pass. Averaging out to 3 stars.Thanks to the publisher, AMACOM Books, and NetGalley for an advanced copy.

Very motivational! I now want to go out and start my own business. The advice was very clear and direct. There were no long, drawn-out explanations, but rather concise and to-the-point instructions on how to start a business and succeed in doing so. I highly recommend this for any aspiring entrepreneur.

I really tried and I really wanted to like this book - I will write this as to not have any spoilers, but the gist of this book, that I got out of it, is this:The chapters jump between three characters, not a bad thing, happens a lot in Fantasy, and I expect it - the three characters are, an "Inquisitor" whose job it is to interrogate information out of people and is generally not a likable character - the second is an ex-assassin, on the run from a guy that kicked him out instead of killing him, and he hooks up with a mage that is a complete a-hole and an apprentice which is too stupid and too unbelievable to be an apprentice - and then, and guard that fences - a lot - like every chapter about him he is either training, fencing, or talking about fencing, and all that I can think is WHO CARES?!?also, after about a third of the book has passed, we get 2 more characters added, whose stories connect even less than the first three, and are even less likable - but rule of thumb is that you do not add major players that late in a novel - I got to page 400 of 502 and quit, because I was skipping entire chapters of the fencing guy, and oh boy do we get details about fencing - and politics - Fantasy Politics is so much fun, that I scheduled a root canal to come down from THAT high - I know that this is supposed to be a great book by a great novel, but is my copy bad or something - did an eight year old write my version and I was the lucky Willy Wonka winner for bad fantasy - I don't know and I don't care - this was horrible and I would never recommend this to anyone for any reason ever.Oh, add what is the first law, because in 80% of the book, you never find out - so, again, who cares?

There’s little way to read The Blade Itself and not think of Game of Thrones. I hate to say that, but it’s true. Abercrombie’s rich fantasy world owes a lot of debt to Martin’s. After all, both series are ones in which magic is largely pushed to the background and minimized; both focus on anti-heroes (at best) and misfits; both juxtapose court intrigues and political scheming against much larger threats that could unravel the world as the characters know it. But more than anything else, there’s the sense of cynicism towards the genre that underlies both series. These are worlds in which traditional heroism barely matters, where old school honor and chivalry are a way to death – if you’re lucky.And yet, to rely too heavily on that comparison is to miss out on all the ways in which The Blade Itself absolutely soars and stands on its own two feet. Over the course of this first novel of The First Law trilogy, Abercrombie sets up a fascinating world, but more than that, he dives deeply into their psyches, giving us a sense of these broken people. Our three main characters – Logen Ninefingers, Sand dan Glokta, Jezal dan Luthar – Abercrombie brings them to rich, detailed life, letting us see their scars, their psychic baggage, their complex motivations. But more than that, rather than embracing the nihilism and selfishness of the men, Abercrombie pushes them farther than that, finding an inner core of decency. It may be small, it may be only a piece of their cruelty or motivations, but it’s there. And that alone makes The First Law stand apart from Martin’s bleak, hopeless world where nothing – and no one – good can last.More than that, though, Abercrombie brings a sometimes dry, sometimes dark, but sometimes genuinely funny sense of humor to the story, allowing his characters to be more than just another grim, broken-down soul. That’s maybe most true of Bayaz, the wizard figure around whom much of the book orbits. Bayaz is no one’s idea of a typical wizard, and that jarring inability to fit expectations pays off wonderfully again and again in the book, as Bayaz demonstrates both his ability and his willingness to use them as he sees fit. In other words, it’s all of Martin’s knack for turning the genre on its head, but done with a little more heart, a bit more humor, and every bit the imagination and talent.If there’s a knock on The Blade Itself, it’s the sense that it’s an intentionally shapeless story at times, one where the lack of predictability makes it hard to make sense of at times. Is this the story of an impending war between the nations? Are the Flatheads a sort of White Walker analog – a monstrous “other” that lurks nearby? How does Ferro and her story tie in with everything going on around Adua? It’s hard to tell until near the end of the book, and even then, it’s a bit hard to get a sense of the bigger picture and how this will come together. But given how engaging, deep, and complex the characters are, how fascinating the world is, and how deep and layered the story is, I’m okay with that. I’m on board to see how this all fits together, and to see what else Abercrombie has going

It's funny. I have started reading this book four times, and only finished it once. I couldn't tell you why I stopped those first three times. The ingredients were all there, I just wasn't hungry. Now, reading it for the fourth time, spending nearly all my free time doing so and finishing up in six days, well I just can't see why the hell I stopped in the first place.The Blade Itself is an immensely promising start to a trilogy that I have decide to read straight through without breaking for other books (something I've shied away from doing in the past year or so). The writing is sharp, the dialogue flows, the world is detailed and easily imagined, but what really sets this book apart for me is the characters. Abercrombie writes some damn good characters. Interesting and dynamic, even characters that I was sure I liked, my opinion of them could be turned completely around with one action, one thought. That makes for a fun reading experience, keeps you on your toes.As fun and fast-paced as The Blade Itself was at times, I still have the feeling that it was largely set-up for what is to come in this trilogy. I purchased Before They Are Hanged immediately upon finishing last night, and I'm excited to see where it takes me.

I'm VERY picky about the fantasy genre. I'm even more picky when it comes to books that are not stand alone.That being said, this is a really great book. The characters span a huge variety of personalities and none of them seem like stereotypical fantasy archetypes. While it takes a bit to really pick up speed, it is beautifully written and has a lot of themes you don't see very often.So that being said, I'm definitely going to continue with this trilogy. Joe Abercrombie is incredibly talented. I would definitely recommend this book if you are picky with your fantasy and are looking for something a little different.

I'm a grandmother and watching the movie didn't appeal to me because I don’t like violence until two male friends and my son insisted I had to see it. I was completely drawn in, especially when the real relationship between the protagonist and Tyler was revealed. To me, it was more of a psychological story. The musings about consumerism, the downward spiral of the main character, the creation of something that spins out of control, and the followers willing to do anything to be part of something were fascinating. His complicated relationship with the only female character who confounds, irritates and draws him is woven into a brilliant story. So I had to read the book. It’s a little different and the ending is different. But I was as drawn in to the book as the film. I also enjoyed the Afterword, which gave some background to the creation and aftermath of this book. Great writing and a compelling plot.

It was nearly impossible for a movie or television show to upstage the book. With Chuck Paluhniak’s “Fight Club,” it was definitely a close battle.As usual, though, the original product won. Nothing against the movie, which is one of my favorites, but there is no way to inject the rawness of Mr. Paluhniuk’s prose into the entire film.The writing contains the power of this book, a first-person tale of one man’s battle with the futility of a life that is good, just not good enough. The author brings us into the story just as the main character begins his fall into the rabbit hole, dragging the reader along. It is interesting that the main character never uses his name, though as a plot device this reinforces the characterization.For those wondering if the book can pull off an ending that can compete with the movie, I can attest the final chapter is very satisfying and is one more reason to pick up the print version. Five well-deserved stars.

It is true, the book is always better than the movie. Watching this movie in 1999 in New York City Theaters and I remember how much influence on my way of thinking, to challenge the hamster wheel, just as I was starting college.Of course the book is way cooler after you watched the movie, as you have Brad Pitt in your head and the other amazing characters from the movie - honestly I am not sure how much I would have enjoyed the book if I didn’t already have the amazing visual experience from watching the video.Yet by reading the book, you get so much more depth and feeling. Those quick 5 second clips in the movie now are written out in pages and you get the more granular feel of what is happening in Tyler and the character’s head (whose name we never know!).The ending is different in the movie and the book - and I saw that in the review when deciding to invest in reading the book or not - and that alone is worth going through it.What was surprising was how close the book and the movie are! Some of the exact lines are right from the book, and for the most part it is fairly straight along the the same storyline.As Fight Club is one of my favorite movies of all time, I of course will enjoy the book and it gives a new angle and dimension - I should probably watch the movie (yes again) to more fully compare the book and movie.

Let's talk about Fight Club. I was borderline unhealthily obsessed with the movie version of Fight Club when I first saw it at 16. In many ways, the book is better. Fight Club deals with self-loathing, repressed impulses, and the hypocritical and meaning-starved existence many of us in the developed world feel we live in a manner which never fails to be fun, engaging, and artistic. In addition to the message, as I've gotten older and read more novels I've come to appreciate the style in which Fight Club is written more and more.PS if this book ends up resonating with your latent aggressive impulses, try boxing, kickboxing or Jiu Jitsu. (But please don't blow stuff up)

I collect all video game art books. This one is in the top three I've gotten next to The Art of Dragon Age Inquisition and Th Art of Assassins Creed Odyssey.It's a heavy duty book. The pages are thick and beautifully glossy. The cover feels like soft leather (it's not leather, it's just as soft though). It has that wonderful new book smell (yall know what I mean, dont judge lmfao)The extras in the box are fine. I dont really care about those things but they're nice. The box it came in is an extra bonus for me.The art is stunning. I purposely didnt share pictures, just buy this book it's worth it. I'm ordering another one to keep sealed like my collection tells me to lmfao

The artwork is beautiful and it’s great to see how it evolved. There is one item included in this edition that is of poor quality. The copper art plate looks and feels like it’s made of cardboard with a vinyl cover.

Although I ordered this before I played the demo, as a sucker for art books I figured I'd keep my order open even though I was ultimately let down by the game itself. I'm glad I did, this art book is beautiful. The presentation is typical Dark Horse limited edition fare, they have a great track record in my book as far as art books go. More than that, what exists within this book are the bones of something that could have been a truly game changing, worthy successor from the studio behind the Dragon Age and Mass Effect series, the latter of which I am a die hard fan. If this game had been set up as a single player, character driven, RPG style game like the original Mass Effect trilogy, this could have been amazing. The "Origins" section of this book is ripe with beautifully creative ideas and a fresh take on the sci-fi game genre. Some of the cast aside designs, locations, fauna, and ideas are mind shatteringly good. Each faction that exists in the game was supposed to have a city designed around their lore you could travel to and explore, instead the entirety of your allies were jammed into one area. I don't know that we'll ever know what truly happened to Anthem during it's 6 year development cycle, maybe too many cooks, maybe overwhelming pressure from a publisher that has a bad track record of hamstringing creative studios and preventing them from producing passionate, focused works of modern playable art. What is clear in the concept art contained in this book is that the original idea for Anthem was going to be radically different from what was delivered. I'm happy I picked this up, but it's a shame the original idea they had, drifted so far when the final product was delivered.
