#570,026 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This book goes through a history of the multiple Brooklyn baseball teams in the three decades from 1850. These eventually coalesced, despite some temporary name changes along the way, into the Brooklyn Dodgers. The author then gives a history of the team - key players, managers and owners - from the late 19th century to the mid-twentieth century. However, for a book that purports to tell "the story" of the Brooklyn Dodgers, it has ambiguities, omissions and mistakes, and is desperately in need of a good editor. To begin, there is a photograph of the Brooklyn team of 1888. The author's caption "identifies" the players by their position in each row. But as some players were standing, sitting and in between, it is impossible to tell who is in which row. The caption does nothing to assist the reader and therefore the author's "identification" of the players is useless. Then there are the mistakes. The author has another picture, this one of the 1916 World Series, which he captions "...shows the only scoring action in the second game." As he states below that the final score was 2-1, there obviously were two more "scoring actions" in that game.Under a picture of Casey Stengel, the author writes that "...he led the Yankees to championships year in and year out in the 1950s and 1960s."Stengel's last Yankee pennant championship was in 1960; that single year hardly qualifies as "the 1960s". And while he did win eight pennants in the 1950s, he lost in two years; that was most of the decade but not "year in and year out".Then there are the omissions. The small one is in the caption of a picture Manager Wilbert Robinson and pitcher Rube Marquard. The caption says the pitcher's delivery was like a dance step he performed with his movie star wife. Having pointed out that she was a movie star begs the question: which movie star was his wife? But the author just ignores that.Another omission is Game 4 of the 1947 World Series. Cookie Lavagetto's pinch-hit double in the ninth inning breaking up Bill Beven's no-hitter was a historic moment in Brooklyn. But the author completely ignores it.But the biggest omission is with the 1950s Dodgers. The book's back page blurb claims "A large part of Brooklyn Dodgers is dedicated to those teams of the 1950s..." That is pure hype - and completely false. The key part of the book - covering the "Boys of Summer" - is in Chapter Eight, a very slim chapter and a very small part of the book. The 1955 World Series win is there, as are some of players. But just as many are not. A book about the 50s Dodgers not mentioning mainstay relief pitcher Clem Labine, making no note of Carl Furillo's unique ability to play balls hit off the concave right field wall - nor of his rifle arm throwing out runners at home plate - and not noting that Don Newcombe was not only an outstanding pitcher but was often used as a pinch hitter is hardly telling the Dodgers story. The book needed another dozen pages to cover the 1950s teams. It is a shame that this book, while giving much history, is such a letdown dealing with the key Dodger decade.

Author Mark Rucker has gotten hold of some priceless photographs from the Dodger archives in writing “Images of Sports: Brooklyn Dodgers” for ARCADIA PUBLISHING. Rucker includes photos of some of the most significant moments in Dodgers history, including Jackie Robinson staring at home as Bobby Thomson crosses the plate to give the Giants the pennant in 1951, and the great catch by Sandy Amoros in the 1955 World Series to help preserve the game 7 win for Johnny Podres. Balancing these moments of gravitas are spring training shots of Hugh Casey wearing a huge sombrero and of Harold “Pee Wee” Reese signing some autographs at Vero Beach. The book is divided into eight chapters, with the first page of each chapter containing a single photograph that is about twice the size of the other photographs in the book. Other than the introductory pages, generally, all pages of the book have two photographs on them.Among the nuggets of information that Rucker includes in his book are naming the pitcher who Joe DiMaggio called the “meanest man” he had ever seen. (DiMaggio was referring to Whitlow Wyatt, a pitcher in the 1940’s for the Dodgers, who Rucker calls an “aggressive knockdown artist.”) In his chapter titled “1910-1919,” Rucker provides two great shots of future manager Casey Stengel in his playing days, reminding us that Stengel could also play the game, as he hit .364 in the 1916 World Series, leading the Dodgers in batting in the series. The book is not flawless, as second baseman Jerry Coleman is identified as a shortstop on page 121 and on page 117 Rucker states Erskine held the World Series strikeout record of 14 until 1967, when in fact it was 1963 that the record was broken. Rucker fails to point out that the pitcher doing the breaking was none other than Sandy Koufax, who struck out 15 Yankees in game 1 of the World Series. In an ideal world, I would have enjoyed seeing more prose, especially in the introduction to each chapter, allowing Rucker to elaborate on the rich history of the Brooklyn franchise. All in all, this was a quick and enjoyable read.Note: The author of this review is also the author of “Spring Training with the Washington Nationals,” published by FONTHILL MEDIA in April 2015. As with the “Brooklyn Dodgers,” the book on the Nationals is 128 pages and uses some excellent photographs to tell its story. All photographs in “Spring Training with the Washington Nationals are in color and are part of Fonthill’s “Images of Modern America” series.

#299,776 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This is the one source that will teach you flight simulator x. Excellent pictorials. Way better than the standard lessons. My only complaint is that the print is a bit light but still readable.

A good (but slightly dated) book for anyone interested in using their home PC for flight training. I learned to fly gliders using Condor software before getting my glider rating, and have flown extensively in X-Plane while training for my Private Pilot certificate. One key consideration that I could not find mentioned in the book is that anyone using a simulator for training should always sit down to the computer with a "real plane" mindset. Doing things like taking shortcuts with procedures, or flying the simulated aircraft as if it were part of a computer game defeats the purpose of training to ingrain muscle memory and create good decision making skills. Act like it is real, and you'll feel like it's real. You can however use the sim to experience situations you would rarely if ever practice in real aircraft, such as attempting the "impossible turn" back to the runway at 400 feet AGL.The age of the book also means it omits key facts about the software it references. FSX is no longer supported and has become stagnant, while X-plane continues to improve in both fidelity and user interface. This means that for X-Plane 11 users they will have to manually enter the situation's initial conditions and not rely on the downloadable situation files. It would be nice to see a revision of this book that updates this.

Kudos to Bruce Williams for an excellent compilation! This is by far the best, most thorough written authority on today's home PC flight simulators, skillfully incorporating two of the best most popular sims (X-Plane and Microsoft FS) on two different platforms (Mac & PC). Mr. Williams masterfully covers everything you need to know --in user-friendly, informative chapters-- about training in the FAA scenario-based method using your PC.I've been flying PC sims since the original Bruce Artwick MS Flight Simulator in the early 80's, all the way through Fly! and X-Plane 10 today. This is the best book on the subject by far, and you can tell lots of work has gone into it. It's thinly reminiscent of some of the "let's pretend..." scenario books that were released in the early days of MS FS, except those were more in the realm of game guides. This book, though, is serious stuff. You can tell Mr. Williams and team has put lots of tedious work into this one. If you're looking for a How-To on operating the sims themselves, this isn't really it; this guide lets you learn technique from the FAA publications that real-world pilots do...but then has a true-to-life flying lesson awaiting you with each chapter. You'll be taught. You'll be briefed. You'll be held to FAA standard. The author's team has also filled the book chock with websites, notes and tips on how to find the best, most current online resources for your training. They've even created a partner site where you can download everything you need to make this program work best-- from charts to free FAA guide downloads and more. The only minor "cons" to this book: Mr. Williams' partner site for this book includes downloadable scenario files for your sim. For X-Plane, these only work up to "X-Plane 9"-- but X-Plane 10 is now the newest release. So if you're like me who has the most current XP version, you're stuck to reading the book only and either not using his scenarios or setting them up in X-Plane 10 yourself. Hopefully the team will create scenario files for XP10 soon. Another improvement that could be made is that too many times in the book there is repeated reference to the partner site or a particular download or app. They probably could have saved lots of paper by consolidating these references into an iconic sidebar a la some of the "Dummies" books. All in all, though, a great buy if you're serious about learning to fly, increasing proficiency, or enjoying your PC sim the way real pilots enjoy their planes.

Bruce Williams has done an impressive job creating a guide to getting real training value out of desktop flight simulator products. Unlike flying in a real aircraft, flying in front of a computer often leaves you without a sense of accomplishment. By following the steps in this book, you can gather real insight into the skills required to become a good pilot.

A great training aid again by Mr Bruce Williams. I would highly recommend this latest training program to any pilot who has access to a computer. This also applies to any "Sim Pilot only", as it helps to master required skills. This is a followup to his "MS Flight Simulator as a Training Aid", which also provided both VFR/IFR Scenario-Based Training. I have flown most of those training flights many times and still gain something to improve my skills. I have not attempted any flights from his new effort yet-still reading the manual. Will be going online to "wily.com" to review and download scenarios once completing review.R.E. Fogle

Very fine guide and extremely thorough

I knew that the situation files provided would not work for X-plane, but I did not consider that a problem. It turned out to be a problem though... very hard to set everything up manually as described in each chapter.

Nice book, very informative if you are an FSX flight simulator aficionado like me. I love it. Unfortunately it came damaged due to poor packaging.

Bruce Williams was the subject of an interview I wrote after chatting with him when he made his anual migration from Seattle to Boulder City, Nevada, wher he keeps his airplane in the winter months. His book is easy to read and is very clearly written. He is an excellent instructor of aerobatic flying.

Review

"[A] very useful book, soundly conceived, competently edited, and beautifully printed. It offers in translation texts of the most important documents which throw light on the Near East background of the Old Testament. As a source book it will be welcomed not merely by Biblical students, but by all ancient historians who concern themselves with the cultures anterior to those of Greece and Rome." (Archaeology)

This is the essential compendium of source material for anyone interested in studying early history in the Levant.First published in 1950, ANET has not yet been surpassed in its breathtaking scope of translations of Sumerian, Egyptian, Babylonian (Akkadian), Assyrian, Hittite, and Ugaritic written material. Despite the title, this collection is certainly not limited to material pertaining to the Bible, but includes literature, poems, philosophical material, legal documents, treaties, spells, hymns, historical documents, and more. Some well-known entries include the Akkadian creation fable Enuma elish, the Sumerian Gilgamesh fragments, "Inanna's Descent into the Underworld", and the Code of Hammurabi. The translations are scholarly and tend toward strictly-literal rather than literary. Owing the nature of the source material many texts are riddled with lacunae. Introductions and explanatory notes are useful but some familiarity with the history and context of these pieces definitely helps. Some collections have been better-translated by now (i.e. Jacobson's Sumerian translations surpass Kramer's pioneering work included here), but there's simply nothing else like it. This is not the only book on ancient near-eastern literature that I would want, but I would never wish to be without it either.

The text block was torn from the spine and cover, front and back. I began to glue and tape cover, text block back to the spine (starting with 1st pic). This book was in horrific condition. Seller didn’t describe it being damaged. Good thing I know how to repair books. Geez, buyer beware.

Huge book, tiny type! That said, really fun to read and think about. It's fascinating to learn what other cultures/times thought. Makes one stop and truly discern what is truth.

For teachers of the Bible, this book is absolutely essential. It contains translations of all the ancient near eastern extra-biblical texts that are relevant towards an adequate understanding of the Hebrew Scriptures, which themselves were written in an ancient near eastern culture that it mirrors in so many ways. Simply compare the texts about slavery or goring oxen in Exodus chapter 21 and very similar texts in the Code of Hammurabi, or the Flood Narrative in Genesis 5-9 and the story of Utnapishtim in the Epic of Gilgamesh.

I used this product for self enrichment and academic studies.

Excellent resource book. It was totally a splurge, but well worth it!

A standard reference for serious Bible teachers. Unsurpassed and authoritative; wish I had bought it sooner. Would make a great gift.

Ancient Near Eastern Texts (aka ANET) is a phenomenal work that has withstood time. It is a foundational tool for those studying the ancient texts that are found OUTSIDE the Bible, yet paint a picture of the time, people, and places around the Old Testament. His treatment of several ancient texts from various cultures is greatly appreciated, and it can be clearly seen why this resource is reference time and time again at the highest levels of academia.
