I bought this book for my son's 2nd birthday. I was shocked how quickly it fell apart. He is average when it comes to wear and tear on toys and books: generally very careful, but not without occasionally standing on a book or flipping pages a bit quickly. I had to re-glue the binding on the inset (small) book within days. Within 2 months, the books have torn apart and the binding on the large book is going. I think the concept and art are great and would love to recommend it, but the design or construction is flawed if it is going to be touched by little hands.

This is the cutest board book ever! I haven't seen one like it. Each page has a mini cutout - so the picture of the mama is on the big part of the page, and the baby is in the small part of the page. This means that the child get to turn his/her own little page. It has the same fun feel of a book that has little flip up parts for a child to look at, in that it gives the child something special to do, but with no risk of breakage - it's nice and sturdy.

Cute book but the binding started coming apart soon after it arrived. Can't read it with my baby till he's older for fear of it getting completely destroyed :( quite sad

This is a cute baby book. It was hard for me to turn the smaller portion of the page (with the baby) while I held my daughter so we just don't read this one too much. It's a simple book and the illustrations are beautiful. This is a great addition to a nautical nursery. In other words, it looks great on the book shelf.

It's a cute book with cute pictures but the verses leave something to be desired and the little pop out section is difficult to navigate when doing story time with my little. If I had seen the whole thing in person I probably wouldn't have purchased it.

My little one specifically requested this book after he received the "pets" version. I am not sure what it is, but something about these books are very appealing to him.

Cute book! But.. the book broke I. Half when my son was turning the pages ... i had to make sure to put clear boxing tape on the insides of each page... womp womp womp😐

Bought this for my baby's first Christmas. He's 5 months old and loves to help turn pages when we read, so the little flip part in the middle of the book will be perfect for him!

I wasn't sure what to expect when I first opened this book. I quickly discovered a beautiful tribute to ancient ways.Bear Heart's retelling of Native American history, traditions, and beliefs left me wishing everyone would read this and take it to heart. The respect that was given to old ones and young ones, nature, animals and plants, is something we all would be wise to follow. And the lessons and experiences he shared were remarkable.I thank Bear Heart in spirit for sharing these great teachings. Clearly he was a gifted man and story teller. And I thank Molly Larkin for compiling these memories into a warm, compelling story of a great being. The lessons filled every page, leaving me with gratitude and hope.

I've read many books on the Native American culture and spirituality. This is one of the best I've read to date. Bear Heart was an amazing person and author Molly Larkin passes on his thoughts and lifestyle with clarity and careful thoughtfulness. A must read for anyone interested in Native American culture.

The book is a beautiful philosophy of an American Indian healer. I bought a second copy to use as a gift. Many lessons of life are conveyed in these writings that would be great tools for rearing children. The book has a slightly slow beginning, but continue reading. I read a little in between a busy schedule, lookingforward to a moment of calm, of reflection, and insight.

When I first read this book I was humbled by the simple eloquence and homely guidance of such a well educated individual. His words required listening. His many ideas, thinking and practice. I was impatient. I knew something of The Way. Now I wanted to know more. Give me more...and then I'll practice what seems right to my way of understanding. Bear Heart, said "no." He wrote this book so that people could listen and think. Practice and learn. See errors of heart and behavior and correct these through prayer to "All That Is." He teaches us about some ceremonies and some important tools. He does not teach us everything. That he leaves these for us to discover through our own spiritual travels is a test of our own fidelity. Fidelity to the Great Spirit, the Tribe and the Truth being the greatest measure of us all. This book needs to be read more than once by all who are of Native American ancestry. And, it belongs on the shelf of any thinking person, particularly those trying to figure out where things are out of harmony or balance.

I'm a big fan of Pema Chodron, and I read all of her books. I first read this book about 13 years ago, when my mind was in a bad state. it was evidenced by my general disregard for my appearance: slightly overweight, drinking a little too much, messy room, messy car, etc. i have adhd, and finding books that i'll read all the way through is hard for me because when i'm "off," i'm just not diligent about anything.then i read the wind is my mother, by bear heart. to say that the book changed my life would be an overstatement, but it was so kind in its message. he was an extremely disciplined individual and what was so cool about it was that he didn't psychoanalyze a bunch of reasons why he did what he did. it's almost as simple as the tao of pooh. it definitely helped me to remove my emotions from every single decision i made, helped me to be kinder to myself in regards to my self-discipline, and most of all, helped me to forgive myself for the way i had been living, because to forgive means to move on, and i was ready to move on, but for some reason, i was always feeling guilty about one thing or another, thus preventing me from moving on.when i began reading this book, i hadn't dreamed in months, or rather, hadn't remembered my dreams. then after i read on the first night, i dreamed i was running around the UNC track, which is blue in real life, and i was running and the track turned into a big ocean and there were live shrimp in there with me and we were all just swimming around. to say that it is cool to me that i remember a dream from 13 years ago is pretty bada$$. :)the message of this book is kindness. maybe i should say messages. kindness, honesty, and compassion. and in my opinion, if i am able to create these messages from within, towards myself, i'll be a lot easier on those around me. it's sort of a circle. a friend once told me, "you gotta give to get." and i really think that is true, but i learned through this book, that i need to start with myself. i need to give myself the compassion and honesty and then i can be true to life around me.also, from a non-self help standpoint, i loved the stories of bear heart's youth, and his stories of learning to be a medicine man. his manner of storytelling via text is very similar to a speech, and there are lots of playful, non-formal moments in the book that i cherish. i hope you'll consider reading this. i re-purchased it again just recently for my iPad and even though i remembered almost all of it, it was a joy to read over and over again. <3

I am not really sure whom or what a Kirkus might be but the review does not do this book justice! At first I was going to bypass loading this on my kindle believing that the review might be accurate. Through an interesting chain of events I obtained the hard copy of the book. For those of you on a spiritual and philosophical path you will find this little book of great interest and beauty. Obviously the reviewer has no philosophical background and perhaps enjoys his knowledge being injected directly into his consciousness. I would not generally be so harsh but this type of review does not do justice to the beauty, truth, light, love, heart and soul that this book contains. It is being shared by an individual who walks his talk and gives beautiful, true life experiences, to share a point. It is not preaching, lecturing, or a dogmatic approach but rather a demonstration of cause and effect. Don't make the mistake of not giving this book a chance.

This book perfectly details Native American beliefs in an easy to read manner. I always recommend this book to my family and friends, even those who aren't interested in spirituality. I reread this book often and it's full of highlights and bookmarks!

My mother was nearing the end of a nearly 7-year battle with advanced breast cancer, when I found this wonderful book. Thank God I'm a fast reader, as her condition deteriorated rapidly, and she became bedridden and practically non-communicative within two days of the book's arrival. Although her body seemed ready for death, something seemed to be holding her back, causing her to become agitated. Using the clues in the book, I realized that she was waiting for my father to say good bye and to tell her he'd be okay. Once I convinced him to do this, she passed peacefully about six hours later, surrounded by those she loved.

I am a nurse, appreciate the insights shared from this book & the individual stories shared. The grace and beauty the dying bestow on us amazes me. This book enlightens the process of dying for the ones actively doing it, the family-/loved one's dealing with the difficulty of losing their loved one, and for those of us caring for patients and families in the midst of death. We all know death is a vital life experience and this book helps us learn that we need not fear death or those dying. To me, this book gives a perspective of hope, understanding, respect and reverence for easing, comforting, assisting the dying and families who are sharing in the experience.

This is a must read for anyone with a loved one with an "impending death" disease (such as cancer). It not only helped me go through my mothers last days with grace and ease but changed my outlook on dying. I am no longer afraid of death. It sounds morbid but this book helped me enjoy the process of watching a loved one die because I did not feel helpless. It will enable you to be comfortable with the process of dying and embrace each step. It will allow you to comfort the person dying and the conversations that will evolve because of your awareness, are precious memories for you and very comforting to the dying person.

My mother has a gliablastoma. This book not only taught me a lot, but gave me some peace of mind. I feel better prepared and now almost feel a calmness about how the end will be. It was very difficult to read in that the stories were of the dying. I cried through almost every story, but it was important and it was healing in an odd way. I am the better for having read it. I can't thank the writer's enough for writing it.

I was given a copy of this book to read by the social worker at the hospice when my brother was dying. Words cannot express my gratitude to the author (and the social worker!) for sharing this wonderful book. It provided stories relevant to the communication of the dying patient. It comforts as well as informs. The biggest takeaway I got was that a dying person has a “to-do list” before they are ready to go. Examples of those who prefer to pass with family around, and those who prefer to pass on their own. I learned so much. I now own a spare copy for family/friends in the event they face this situation.

I originally purchased this book when my father passed away after a long illness, and it brought me comfort. I don't want to simplify it too much, but It is written by Hospice nurses and tells of their observations of different ways the dying communicate with their loved ones when the end is near. It may be that someone asks for their shoes (as my Dad did), shortly before they pass away - or many other incidences in their experience. I have purchased several additional copies as gifts since I got one for myself. Obviously, I recommend this book if you are looking for a comforting read.

We never want to have to read this kind of book, but it's a nice compilation of short stories written by authors who experienced the passing of many terminally ill patients. Sad moments that overall offer insight and relief in better understanding the dying process. While it's not a "what to expect" guide, it was comforting to see a thread of commonality, bringing an ease to the pain.

I found this book by chance decades ago. I have read it many times and it prepared me to be with my parents as they died and to provide hospice care in my home for my brother last week. Understanding how to listen to him helped me ease him from life feeling comforted and loved in a safe and familiar place. I am honored i could do that for him, and am grateful for the preparation this wonderful book has given me. I recommend it to everyone i know who is struggling with the imminent death of a loved one.
