Be Sure To Read the "Introduction"-- this is the book you give to your daughter or a good friend to read. Eric Metaxas has chosen his subjects well and his research is impeccable. Whether you like every woman he wrote about, after reading this book you will at the very least respect their life journey and the way they devoted their life to living out their beliefs. It's caused me to evaluate whether I have the chutzpah to live my life with as much passion in my relationship with God and with the depth of commitment and love for Him the way they did. I bought "Seven Men" for my husband, maybe it will affect him the way this book did me. I'm not the same woman I was when I first picked up this book.

We first read Metaxas' 7 Men and the Secret of Their Greatness. When he published 7 Women, we were thrilled. I lead a Christian Book Club, a mixture of men and women, and we are presently reviewing this book. Seven different members will be reviewing each of the stories of the 7 Women. Metaxas is an outstanding biographer. I highly recommend anything he has written.Jean Haynes

Imagine diving into the lives of some of the most influential and successful women in history. Not the super wealthy or internet famous—instead, women whose stories and influence spans hundreds of years, multiple continents, and a wide variety of topics.Eric Metaxas doesn’t offer a book of dry historical narratives about these women. Instead, his writing style offers their lives as a story that draws the reader in and gives them an insight into who these women were beyond their accomplishments.The book in a couple sentences: 7 great women—Joan of Arc, Susanna Wesley, Hannah More, Saint Maria of Paris, Corrie ten Boom, Rosa Parks Mother Teresa. Each one could have a collection written about her but Metaxas does an amazing job of highlighting not only their accomplishments but the character of each woman. You learn her background and how she became great.What I liked most: Each story had the right mix of history, fact, and perspective to bring the stories to life. The writing and tone allow readers to imagine the stories and engage. Plus, the wide variety of women and the purposeful choice of women who excelled without comparison to men is encouraging.I might change: Although each woman is unique, a concluding chapter that highlights similarities between all of the women would have helped the reader make solid conclusions.A quote to remember: “When I consider the seven women I chose, I see that most of them were great for reasons that derive precisely from their being women, not in spite of it; and what made them great has nothing to do with their being measured against or competing with men. In other words, their accomplishments are not gender-neutral but are rooted in their singularity as women.”

After reading the Bonhoeffer biography and hearing Metaxas speak live, I have come to appreciate & admire his unique blend of humor, intellectual rigor, and faith. I expect to come away challenged by his works and inspired by his ability to engage the audience with powerful and relevant truths. I just finished Seven Women and left feeling disappointed. As other reviewers have noted, I left unsure what truths or message he wanted to convey. I left confused over some of his comments about gender and unsure what he sees as the secret of their greatness (or ours). Perhaps some of that stems from his vantage point as a male author writing on the secret of greatness in women. I'm willing to give him grace in that. I did find myself wishing he had labeled each sketch with a theme, of what he thought that woman portrayed and why it was important or how it might speak to women (and men) today.As for the profiled women, I learned some fascinating portraits of some fascinating women, several that were completely new to me. Metaxas introduces us to their story through brief biographical & historical sketches. He sheds light on their stories and the times in which they lived. In doing so, he implicitly debunks stereotypes of one formula for womanhood and shows women who shaped history and made significant contributions in a variety of contexts. While their stories are interesting and stand alone as mini-bios, I felt less engaged as a reader and left to wonder myself why their story is significant to him and how or why he thinks it might speak to us today. (And I think there are many ways these stories can & should speak to us.) I have come to appreciate his insights as an author and wished I left with more of them in regards to this book and these women. As a single woman, I strongly appreciate, though, the pictures of great women who are single & faithful, those who made contributions beyond motherhood & marriage as well as those who were faithful through hard marriages, heartbreak, and abandonment.It's not my favorite Metaxas book, but I'm still a Metaxas fan. I'll look forward to engaging the next read.(I did not receive the book free and am writing the review just to share my thoughts.)

Great book which consists of mini biographies of 7 remarkable women and how their faith led and sustained them. Makes you want to read more about each one! Some of the writing was not in the same style as the others and in the acknowledgements the author wrote that some was written by his assistant. So I guess this would be the cause. At any rate, if you want a book to introduce you to some great women this is for you!

I enjoyed reading these mini-biographies about women that I may have heard of but knew nothing about. I really like Eric Metaxas writing style; it is very easy to read. I plan on reading more of his work in the future.

LOVING this book, thus far. I wanted some great nonfiction for the new year and Susanna Wesley is one of my spiritual heroes ever since my son died. She is the reason I bought this book, but I'm enjoying getting to know the other women so far, too.

Eric Metaxes is providing for a whole new generation to experience heroes, not Marvel (although those are fun) but true persons of integrity, faith and purpose. Every young man and young woman should read his 7 Men and 7 Women. Well done!

A friend recommended these Brighter Cards. I ordered several different card sets (shapes, letters, numbers, words, etc) and have been working them with my 2 year old. He likes the cards and the colors/ pictures on them. He also enjoys putting each card back in the box after we're done with it.All in all I think these are a good learning tool. And I love the low price!!!!My only complaint is that the cards are a bit on the thin side.....and when considering that toddlers will be handeling them, they should be thicker to ensure durability and longevity.

I got these flash cards for my son who is 22 months old. Just to start a little fun, educational practice if he is into it. These flash cards have the uppercase and lowercase letters, each on different cards but with the same picture.The pictures are colorful and cute with the upper or lower case letter at the top in a bold, black print. (Please see pictures below!) The cards are printed on a glossy card stock that is of a good quality.These are a great, educational tool and I'm very happy with my purchase! I also ordered the "My first words" and "My first shapes and colors" from the same seller and am equally excited with my purchase!

There was literally one thing to do when they designed the game... Choose the right font.... Guess what... They chose the worst font! You cannot tell the difference between L and I. 'u' looks the same as upside down n. Also... j for Jacks?? Who gives their two year old jacks? Couldn't find jug? Jaguar? Jelly? Joker? Really?

These are perfect for kids. Bought this for a toddler who is a year and a half and he learned them so quickly. It comes with two sets of the alphabet -- one uppercase and one lowercase. This will also be helpful once he starts writing. If you show these to your kids even for just 5 minutes every day, they will learn it super fast and before you know it, they'll be able to pick them out if you lay them out. Very educational!The only thing is that they're very thin and easy to bend. So if you give them to your kids, they might just bend and fold them easily.

These are amazing flash cards to be used as a teaching tool. I like that they have upper case and lower case letters. The cards are big enough to see the letters and pictures at a distance but small enough for little one's hands to manage them. Since my 2 year old is sometimes rough with the cards they bend and would wish the paper stock were a bit thicker.Highly recommend these cards for enrichment.

I’m not sure what I expected for the price point but I was a little surprised when I saw the size and felt the cards. My baby is still young so I bought these just as a starter. All he does is grab at them and try to eat them, so they were just a little thin for me. I can assume that for an older child they would work fine. I will probably be purchasing a bigger set and saving these for when baby is older

For the price these cards are great. I bought them for my 2 year old and shes been doing great with learning the new pictures on the cards, and there sturdier then some of the other flash cards I have found. Knowing my child is going to bend these cards and they wont last forever I'm very happy with the price and quality of them so when they get to banged up I can just purchase more for her. Shes already learned a bunch from using them.

These are a huge hit with my 2 year old daughter. She knows the ABC song and now we are learing the actual meaning of the letters and what they look like. These cards do a great job of word and image association for toddlers learning the alphabet. She really enjoys playing mating game with the cards as well. Good quality, heavy weight card stock makes these ideal for toddlers learning the alphabet!

I remember seeing Clint Malarchuk's horrific neck injury as a kid, but had not thought about him in years until seeing a 2014 profile of him on ESPN. I did not have any idea what the years after his NHL career had been like or that he has a bullet in his head as a result of a suicide attempt.Malarchuk's autobiography is very different from most sports autobiographies. As far as I know, the only other athlete who really tackles the subject of mental illness head on is Jimmy Piersall in his famous "Fear Strikes Out." memoir..The first third of Malarchuk's book is rather slow as he discusses his childhood and makes his way up the ladder in hockey. But once Malarchuk suffers his 1989 injury, the book picks up as Malarchuk's life spirals downward.It now seems difficult to believe that Malarchuk did not receive any professional counseling following his injury or that he was back on the ice just 10 days after nearly dying. He speculates in the book that one of the reasons the NHL Players' Association was so willing to pay for his trip to rehab long after his career ended is because there was at least some sense of guilt on the part of the league for not getting him some emotional support when the injury happened.Malarchuk talks about his battles with obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, anxiety, insomnia, nightmares -- all of which were made worse by alcoholism. Few athletes have ever laid bare their problems in print the way Malarchuk does here. One thing that really stuck out to me during the latter stages of the book is how amazing it is that his wife, Joanie,did not leave him when Malarchuk's life began sinking further and further into a pit of mental illness.Another line from the book that really stuck out to me was Malarchuk admitting that when he was dreaming of being an NHL goaltender, he never really thought that the thing he would be most remembered for in his career would be suffering a terrible injury and nearly dying on the ice.Malarchuk is not a professional writer, and does not claim to be. But the book has a candor to it found in few other sports autobiographies.

I finished this book last night and am still processing it. The book had a bit of everything - funny to gut wrenching moments and joy. It was a rollercoaster ride and one I'm glad I took. As someone who deals with chronic depression I found myself nodding in places about the struggle, the voices in the head and remembering my own attempts from my past. It really is hard to describe what you are going through to someone else and get them to understand. There is no such thing as being better, you manage and survive. It's not like you caught a cold and it will be gone in a few days. You battle every day.While others have slammed Mr. Malarchuk for his words and bravado in their reviews, I have to wonder how many of them have ever played a professional sport at the level he did or gone through such a traumatic event as having their throat slit? Mr. Malarchuk showed himself, showed who he is as a person, as a player, father, etc. in a very raw way. No one is superman, none of us are perfect but this is who this man is and to come forth and share his story is important. It needed to be told.I enjoyed this book very much and as someone who has been in the trenches for a long time, it's encouraging to hear another talk about their struggle so openly.

What an incredibly brave act by Clint Malarchuk to lay bare the details of his life's struggle. As a nearly 40-year mental health practitioner, I was astonished at the number of times and the number of ways people failed Clint. In the 80's we already had "mandated reporters" and yet teachers and coaches who surely knew of his family circumstances did nothing. Thus, the abuse continued and Clint and his mother ended up needlessly abandoned and impoverished. A systemic failure by everyone around them which contributed to Clint's development of severe OCD and depression to walk hand-in-glove with his PTSD. This, along with the genetic guarantee of his father's alcoholism ended up directing his path of wildly complicated coping and avoidance pertaining to the ghosts that haunted him and the undeniably loving heart and courageous spirit that drove him forward to his fate.I highly recommend this book to mental health providers, doctors of all specialties, and coaches. Until the end of the book, we see a processation of professionals who missed the boat in their diagnostic and treatment decisions. This book is a great case study in that regard. For athletes this an important and cautionary tale: when your life feels unbalanced, IT IS. Listen to your body talk to you - don't dull the voice with drugs or a lifestyle that distracts you from your own truth.

Its amazing what Clint has been through and how his wife stuck by his side through it all. Before reading I've always known him as the goalie who played for the Sabres who got his neck sliced during a game and almost bled to death. I never realized all that he has been through before and after that incident and the type of mental issues that he has faced during his life.The book chronicles his hockey career all the way back to when he was a kid up to his days as an NHL/Minor league coach. There are many humorous and exciting stories in this book but it is also candid and blunt when it came battling his demons with alcohol and mental illness. I think Clint is a great writer and hopefully someday will write another.

Started to obsess about hockey back in the early 90's, when NHL 2 Night showed the great highlights of Gretzky, Mario, and the other all stars... One night, it must've​ been the anniversary of Clint's injury... Before YouTube and rewinding live TV... Knowing that Clint struggled with more than the physical injury he's known for made this book a must read...

This book as everyone else said has lots of good tasting juices and very easy to follow and easy to us. I however am looking for a book of juices that are healthy as a primary factor and then good tasting as a second, while all of these are not bad for you they are mainly fruit with very little veggie juices. Sure most of them have a veggie or two but not what you would expect by its title.If I just wanted a good book about store bought alternative juices then this is excellent...Kale, the worlds super food is hardly used in any of these, with it being as good as it is you would think there would be a chapter with this in it, no! there are a few chapters with viggies but far less than fruits.I have two other books that have many more good "Green" recipes but not nearly as easy to use, they are complete books with data, facts nutrition info (including calories) one is called Juicing by Michael T Murray, the other Juice Fasting and Detoxification. These have lots of good recipes, BUT these books are not just for that so there are not nearly as many as in the book I'm reviewing here.So all in all it is a good book if you just want some pop or store bought alternatives, but not if you want to go on a health kick or juice diet.

I bought this book as a step to start juicing more. Every book I find on juicing may contain helpful info but the organization is always lacking. Most recipes in these books are organized by your ailment, not here. The book has a great spiral spine so you can lay it flat while you follow a recipe. I have tried many recipes in this book and almost all of them have been really yummy even when I may not have all the ingredients on hand. The very best part of this book is the organization. If you have a ton of apples or oranges in the fruit bowl, this book is organized by fruit. It has these great little icons in the middle of the outside edge and you flip through quickly to see what recipe you want. The pages are shiny and colorful which most book lovers like to see. Even though this book is not organized by illness, it does have an index on what to drink for a certain problem.After looking at lots of juicing books, this seemed the best for me. Further these recipes are simple and have ingredients most people have on hand. Some juicing books have exotic recipes and when you are just starting out, it is easier to juice when it is simple and you have it on hand.

Its a great book, organized nicely and lots of recipes. I was hoping it had less fruit smoothies though, and more green ideas. It is a fantastic juice book. Just be careful of how much fruit you add, due to the sugar content. Another good suggestion would be if it had caloric data for the recipes. None the less, a great book for juicing and smoothies, tea ideas too. Just wasnt exactly what I was hoping for.

First off: I don't juice anymore, I blend to get fiber and more nutrients. That being said, this is still my go-to book several times a week. A quick explanation of what this book has and can do for you: 1. Recipes list health benefits: vitamins, minerals, key nutrients with a star-rating system for energy-boosting, detoxing, immunity-boosting properties, digestive system, skin 2. An information section with common health ailments and suggested juices/smoothies to help combat these ailments 3. An easy to thumb through style book that lays flat 4. Recipes organized several ways: color-coded chapters (juices, smoothies, quenchers, ailments) or by the specific fruit/vegetable via the index or picture on each page.

My wife was having health problems (FMS) and wanted to start juicing to see if it helped, but didn't really know what to make for herself. I got her this book along with a juicer, and she's loved juicing ever since. The recipes are good, but I'm not sure I buy into the supposed health benefits listed for each. Sounds kind of like mumbo-jumbo to me (I'd replace all the benefits listings with "It's good for you, stupid - just drink it"), but my wife loves to compare them all to see "what she needs". If that's for you, go for it and good luck. If not, they'll still be delicious.Anyways, all the recipes I've tried have been great - except for the broccoli/grapefruit one. That probably goes without saying, but we tried it anyways. Don't. Just don't.

The only reason I am giving it a four is because I am spoiled by the other juice book by the same author---the one with pictures. Other than that, they are basically the same book and perfect for people who like to juice. What I like about this book is that it is plastic, wipeable material, which if you re like me, this kind of book is perfect because you can just wipe down the book with a paper towel if you say, have carrot juice explode everywhere. There are also A LOT of recipes. This book is no-non-sense, straight to the point, juice recipes. I appreciate that. I buy this book for everyone I know that wants to start juicing and everyone loves it. I actually owned the other Juice book until it was never returned and bought this to take it's place. Frankly, I find that I don't even miss the other version with pictures. Highly reccomended.

Every combination you could ever think of is in this book. GREAT resource for finding a "mix" drink to combat specific health issues. If you have gout, this book tells you what vegetable and fruit combination to deal with it. Have bad acne, there is a juice combo for that. All natural remedies, when you go to the grocery store you can head towards the fresh fruits and veggies section; instead of going to the back to the pharmacy for medications. It’s a pretty good book, nice pictures interspaced with personal anecdotes, stories about builders, and build directions. Fair warning: Shane loves the crude, low fidelity end of homemade instruments. So you won’t find useful build info on better quality instruments here, nothing on truss rods or dimensions on six string versions. For that matter, there’s not a wealth of dimensional info for anything; Shane likes the more rough and tumble, anything goes method. If this describes you, then this is your book. If this isn’t you, but you’re still interested in cigar box guitars, you’ll still enjoy reading the book, it just won’t be very useful. You’ll probably see something that you’ll be interested in building or playing anyway.

Outstanding! If you have any interest at all in cigar box guitars, either as a player, a builder, or a fan, this is the book to get. We’ll written, entertaining, fun to read, and the photos are beautiful. Just order it!

Great book, not only for the instructions, but it's also just a fun book to look through. The instructions are well detailed and in difficulty. There's even one (The Portland Cowboy guitar) that be built easily by the power tool deprived amongst us.

I have planned a journey to Gettysburg for years, and when I finally do make it to that historical location, I have added one additional stop – Speal’s Tavern, in New Alexandria, Pennsylvania.Speal’s Tavern is owned by author Shane Speal’s father, and along with a serving of beer, one can also visit the museum display of cigar box guitars, with builders from all around the world contributing. After reading Mr. Speal’s book, it would be fun to see the handiwork of other creators.I had envisioned a book of a down-and-dirty collection of hand-made guitars, a combination of Appalachian style instruments made from whatever materials were at hand. The author’s book was far more interesting than anything I could have imagined. Although Mr. Speal entertains us with quirky stories from his personal history, the meat and potatoes are the pictures and descriptions of the guitars and other items.The descriptions don’t stop with the physical details of the instruments. This is a how-to, get-your-hands-involved book, and includes lists of materials and tools needed along with step-by-step instructions on crafting a guitar of your very own. Be ready to be instructed, amused, and wowed, as the author moves from cigar boxes to wine containers to using the old metal ham containers! Readers are encouraged to get involved, and let your imagination take you to new ideas. There are plenty of color pictures, and most people will have the necessary tools already at hand.The book moves on to other creations, teaching us how to build a washtub bass, foot stompers, lap steel guitars, and other interesting variations (gotta mention the beer can microphone). If your buddies are playing their instruments too loud, never fear, as there are instructions how to build homemade pre-amps as well as adding pick-ups to all your new instruments.Whether or not this book turns you into a fan or a DIY cigar box guitar-building fanatic, it’s a fun and entertaining read written by someone who enjoys what he is doing.
