This is a scholarly collection of three essays dealing with modern controversies over museum installations, the controversy coming over how racist the installations themselves were or certain works within the installation. The book was readable and short. What I liked most about the book was how it is academic but user-friendly in terms of vocabulary and being free of bull****. She also did a great job of clearly and calmly identifying the racism, but also gave the white people the place to speak or try to explain what they had been doing; in that sense it is very non-bougie [which is a good thing]. A boogie white person would have just "both sides" this crap and treated it like there was equivalency somehow. There isn't. However it's nice because she doesnt't get fake outraged or peformative [that's what I mean by scholarly] she just calmly let's people's words speak for themselves. An extremely useful introduction to the topic.

A smart, readable series of three interconnected narratives, drawing connections between very recent developments in the American art world and precedents in the 1960s and 1970s. The author has constructed the text almost entirely on the basis of primary sources—interviews, letters, art reviews, and facebook posts, and tells a morally complex and important story with an unusual combination of rigor and directness.

This book contains essays about the relationship between art objects, artists, the public, the museum/art-business world, and the political background of all of these things. They are not essays about art itself. For example, the first essay is about a recent controversy over a painting in the 2017 Whitney Biennial. If a viewer at the Biennial viewed “Emmett Till” without reading the wall text, without knowing the title, without knowing the artist’s name or race, that viewer would see a fairly unremarkable work of modern representational art. All of the weight of the subsequent analyses, including the one in this book, comes from the context, including the race of the artist. The second and third essays in the book are also about context, including the context of the exhibitions themselves, and about the language used to describe art as well.The essays are thoughtful and thought provoking. Essays about art and its context can be art themselves. These are. Read them. They will make you think. And as you think about these essays think about the many, many words that have been written about Duchamp’s “Fountain”. The “Fountain” itself was just an upside down urinal. All of its fame came from its context. The work was rejected by the 1917 Society of Independent Artists exhibition with the statement, “The Fountain may be a very useful object in its place, but its place is not in an art exhibition and it is, by no definition, a work of art.” However, it changed the scope of the world of art. These essays make me think of the furor over “Fountain”, which justifiably became important than the work itself.To use language from a different discipline, these essays are about metadata; Perhaps that makes them meta-metadata. They are valuable, but they should not make us forget the underlying raw data, which are the works of art themselves.

Blazing good book and fun to read.

One of the best books I've read this year, this is an excellent and timely book on recent (and not-so-recent) controversies around racism, protests, and art institutions. If you followed the 2014 OR 2017 Whitney Biennial controversies around race, but you weren't sure how to interpret them or historically contextualize them, this is the book for you. If you are interested in current protest movements like Black Lives Matter or past ones, like the Black Emergency Cultural Coalition (BECC), or if you want to learn more about histories of African American art that also address the understudied aspect of exhibition histories of black artists, this is the book for you. If you want to be a better "white ally" to the protest movements of people of color, or if you are interested in becoming more involved in helping to facilitate greater diversity and equality in the visual arts realm, this book is for you. Working backwards from the past to the present through three exhibition case studies at three NYC arts institutions -- the Met, Artists' Space, and the Whitney -- this book unravels the interconnected and persistent histories of systemic racism in our nation's art institutions and art communities and offers compelling suggestions for a way forward.

Just finished reading Aruna D'Souza's WHITEWALLING, which examines the controversy surrounding the inclusion of Dana Schutz's painting "Open Casket" in the 2017 Whitney Biennial, placing the protests occasioned by this work in the context of earlier episodes of crisis around race and power in the NYC art world in 1979 and 1969 - specifically as pertains to the exclusion of Black artists and curators from the power centers of the art world. Lucid, balanced, and persuasively written. I highly recommend it to anyone who'd like some help getting an overview and clearer understanding of the issues involved. Really smart, clear, nuanced writing, and a great read! Substantial, but you'll still be able to follow if you read it on the beach :-)

I read lots of YA fiction, but I seldom review it. This book was a delightful surprise. Meticulous research underlay the entire story, yet never came as an info-dump. The characters were enganging and vivid, and the plot was more complex and intriguing than the average for this genre. Just a delightful page-turner!

Can't wait to read this with my daughter and play the game! I'm a huge ancient Egyptian admirer and can't wait to see how this book plays into adding passion to my daughters life as well.

I loved this book. It's a very exciting start to a fun filled adventure series. It's a nice easy read that anyone can enjoy with lots of myth and history mixed in. I can't wait to read the next one!

This book is very different. If you are into Egyptian history this is great. This book is not in my mind for very young kids (5 or under). But I loved the book...and all the action can not wait for book 2!

My son enjoyed the story and he also listened to the audiobook companion to help process the material in a more comprehensive way.

This one too was for my grandson.

Nice if you like fiction and Egyptology definitely if you love reading. Wasn't to much of a torture to read but some parts were slow

About the Author

Brian D. McLaren is an author, speaker, activist, and public theologian. After teaching college English, Brian was a church planter, pastor, and networker in the Baltimore-Washington DC area for over 20 years. This is the second McLaren book I've read, and I have the same issue with both - he has a good idea, he states it clearly at the outset, he spends a chapter or two doing a good job setting it up....and then he just gets lost. In reading both books I had the exact same experience of being really excited, going along with him for the ride for several chapters, and then finding myself just tossing the thing aside, because it got bogged down. So to be fair, I have to say I did not finish this book. I TRIED - mightily. But after really making his point in the first couple of chapters, teasing you that he would develop them further in the remainder of the book, he simply didn't. So I left.

I liked this book a lot. McLaren is very warm to those that would disagree with him, and many of his ideas are very compelling.He makes the case for a new "kind" of Christian identity, which he calls "strong and benevolent" in contrast to the "strong but hostile" style of hardline Conservative Christianity, and the "weak but benevolent" style of the more liberal/unitarian beliefs.I think this book is worth reading regardless of your beliefs or views. McLaren's challenges in this book are very needed in today's world, and I found myself regularly challenged by it. He also really seems to live it out. However, I will say that this book is directed to Christians. The book title might be a little misleading - the book is largely about Christianity, and doesn't spend much more than a chapter talking about the specifics of Islam or Judaism.Personally there are many aspects of Christianity that I hold dearly such as the afterlife, and the problem of suffering apart from human evil, or spiritual formation that are either unaddressed or de-emphasized by McLaren. But no book is complete. I enjoyed the book a lot, and I think it will help me be a better neighbor.

Why do we think that our beliefs are supreme over others' beliefs? And based on those differences, oftentimes, results in the most violent and offensive actions. Beliefs always transfer into decisions and then actions. The kind of God you believe in, whether loving and benevolent, or violent and retributive, determines how you treat "the other".Brian gives a very insightful perspective of our historical decisions that have not always resulted in benevolence but rather conflict and murder.We should walk the road with benevolence toward our fellow Hindu, Muslim, and Buddhist to work together to help the poor, the needy, the outcasts, as well as making sound decisions about our use of this beautiful planet, keeping in mind how our decisions and actions might affect individuals' well being across the globe.

Christianity is no longer the cultural norm in America. Incidents across the world have highlighted our many differences. How do Christians respond to Muslims, Buddhists, Jews, and so on?Brian McLaren's appropriately titled book Why Did Jesus, Moses, the Buddha, and Mohammed Cross the Road? attempts to refocus our goals as followers of Christ.From a purely historical and literary perspective, Jesus is a very interesting character. He spends almost his entire ministry with societal outcasts while specifically avoiding the religious authority of the day. Now fast forward over two thousand years, where do we find the followers of Jesus? Are they more concerned about loving people or staying in line with Christian values?McLaren divides this book into four sections.The Crisis of Christian Identity. Identify yourself as a Christian and you will unfortunately be labeled with several negative qualities. Regrettably, most of these perceived qualities have been earned by well-intended but severely misguided Christians. Just like the Pharisees found in the Gospels, Christians today have become more concerned about staying holy and not sinning that we forget to love our brothers and sisters on earth. To be strong Christians, we need humble hearts. To be strong Christians, we need to focus on loving others as an act of loving God. We will definitely receive reprimands from the Christian mainstream but as McLaren reminds us, "Crucifixion happens, not at the hand of others, but Us."The Doctrinal Challenge and The Liturgical Challenge. These two sections were a bit weak in my opinion. I understand McLaren's desire to refocus our doctrines and liturgy so that we focus more on others and the love that God wants us to show. I liked the areas where I felt like he was correcting doctrinal misunderstandings, but I didn't like how he tried to change the entire focus of a tradition or sacrament. See chapter on baptism. I certainly don't disagree with his changes or adjustments, I just don't think the changes are the solution. There was not much tie in to the whole theme of the book.The Missional Challenge. The best way to describe the challenge of being a Christian in a multifaith world can be summed up by Gandhi. One, be like Christ. Two, don't tone done your message. Three, center on love. Four, study non-Christian religions.In conclusion, this is great book on religious diversity and more importantly, loving others. This is the book I think Rob Bell was trying to write when he penned Love Wins. Brian McLaren does a great job writing in simple and straightforward terms. He does not try to throw Greek words at you to prove a theological point. I look forward to reading more from McLaren in the future.

Excellent book for our time when there is so much hatred for people of other faiths. Mr McLaren shows how we can connect with other faiths without diluting our own faith. He shows us how to give compassion to others and to see God at work in other faiths. I have always believed that God shows himself to all in different ways. He does not despise others as they are His children also. Remember the story of Abraham, Sarah and her servant Hagar. Sarah was jealous of Hagar as Ismael was the first born of their family and Isaac the second born. But God did not desert Ismael and Hagar but promised them blessings in the future. We have to look at others and see God in them. This is the way to bring peace to earth by joining together for the good of all.

I make a lot of quesadillas now but I've always stuck with a few basic ingredients. I never really thought about experimenting with different kinds of cheeses before. But I will be now. Seafood sounds like a great addition - but not too sure about the octopus. I've never run across fried quesadillas before but they look delicious. I will be trying soon. Thanks for some good Mexican food recipes.
