Puzzle print is very small. I enjoy all of Mr. Newman's puzzles very much but these are hard to see.

Oh, Barbara.Have you ever had a friend who just love, but she can't get out of her own way? This is how I'm starting to feel about Barbara Kingsolver's writing. She is so talented. She's funny and smart and insightful. And she just can't get out of her own way!!Once upon a time, Barbara Kingsolver wrote these amazing novels, exciting and emotionally powerful and page turners in the most exciting way; page turners because of the ideas inside them, not because of cheap thrills. Pigs in Heaven was a suspense novel about adoption and cultural appropriation; Poisonwood Bible about missionaries imposing their will in foreign countries. I say this because Ms. Kingsolver has always written about "politically correct' topics, she has always written with an agenda, but she used to be able to do it so skillfully that you didn't mind.And hey. I'm an easy target. I share all her beliefs! I shouldn't mind being lectured, I happily read op eds at the NY Times all the time! But her last several novels have made me so frustrated, they've barely bothered to be books at all, they've just been lectures thinly disguised. I was so so hopeful that this one would be different, the advance word promised a return to form.So I started reading with great glee. And yes. All the best of Barbara Kingsolver is there! She can create incredible worlds, in this case, two families living a century apart, sharing one disastrous house in one deeply flawed neighborhood. There is Willa, living such a perfect archeyptal life of the failing middle class family; and Thatcher, living at the dawn of the scientific age, when Darwinism and feminism are each just coming into view. The novel alternates chapters between these two stories, two families living in the same falling-apart home. (This is as subtle as the novel gets.)She also is more funny than she often gets credit for; Polly, the budding feminist in Thatcher's house, interacting with her older sister Rose, a traditionalist, is funny! Willa's befuddlement at her incredibly PC daughter, and the occasional way that she deflates her daughter's self righteousness, is also funny. And of course, Ms. Kingsolver is in her sweet spot when writing about science, and the scientific discoveries taking place in Thatcher's time frame, with the eccentric female scientist who drives much of that story. I wonder if the novel had stayed in the past, if it might have worked a little bit better.Because, sigh, in the present day scenes it just feels like a series of lectures. There is a dinner conversation in which the characters all debate the economy; another chapter dedicated to the failing health care system; another chapter dedicated to how hard it is to make a living in the gig economy; yes we get it! Everything is terrible! What feels frustrating about this is the sense that Ms. Kingsolver thinks she is teaching me something I didn't know, like a parent hiding vegetables in the mac and cheese. I would probably be okay with that if it tasted good, but it is just so obvious, that maybe that is what bothers me. Does she think I won't notice that I've been lectured to for an entire chapter? About something that I already know?Anyway. I'm giving her four stars because....well, because I guess I found it less offensive than Lacuna, and also because, to be honest, my expectations for her have declined through the years. I liked the Thatcher chapters, and I skimmed the lectures, and I also recognize that at this point, she's unlikely to change.

I used to love Barbara Kingsolver's writing. The Poisonwood Bible, Bean Trees, and Animal Dreams are some of my favorite novels. But then she started getting very preachy, using her novels for what I interpret as authorial interjection. I feel lectured by her on a variety of subjects that must be close to her heart. In fact, many of her causes are close to my own heart. Despite this commonality of social consciousness and politics, that is not what I want to find in a novel. I want to be transported, have my mind filled with glorious images, feel like I've left the real world behind and I'm in the pages of magic, the throes of a book.In 'Unsheltered', Ms. Kingsolver makes a case about the fragility of what we consider our most important and significant asset - our homes or feeling sheltered in a precarious world.. The novel takes place in two timelines. The first one is current. A family has moved back to their ancestral home in Vineland New Jersey and realize that it is falling apart.. The very first sentence of the book says it very well: "'The simplest thing would be to tear it down', the man said. ' The house is a shambles'". The people who lived in the home during the 19th century dealt with the same issues. "If it were only the roof, we wouldn't be in for so much trouble. But I'm afraid the whole house is at odds with itself."As the novel opens, in present time, Willa, the family matriarch, finds out that her son Zeke's partner has taken her own life. Zeke is left with an infant to care for and, despite being the graduate of ivy league schools, has no job and is $100,000 dollars in debt from student loans. For some reason his parents claim they didn't realize he was in such debt. Though Zeke and his partner Helene were not married, she was a lawyer and it seems that neither of them thought to prepare a will or get insurance. Zeke was completely dependent on Helene's work for financial security. I understand postpartum depression very well, but the novel seems to want to blame the obstetrician for the suicide Willa says to Zeke, "Helene died of depression. A medical condition caused by pregnancy and an OB-GYN who cared more about the baby than the mother". How does the reader know this is true? We don't. We are expected to believe that Helene's doctor is ignorant and as cold as an iceberg. Nothing is said about Helene reaching out for help or telling her doctor about her emotional state.Then there is Nic, Willa's cranky father-in-law, who lives with them. I was so annoyed at the Healthcare 101 lecture when Nic sought medical care that I could have thrown the book across the room. It felt like Ms. Kingsolver was going on ad infinitum about the horrible insurance companies, the medicare rules and regulations, the easy ways that clinics deny services, and all the loopholes that exist to prevent one from getting the medical care they need. It's not that I don't agree with her but none of this was fluid to the narrative. It was an appendage, an authorial assertion that did not feel organic or necessary.Ms Kingsolver also takes on academia, student loan debt, the crumby job market, and how difficult it is to earn a living wage in this country. Yes, it does feel like the house is falling down around us. But does this a novel make? I say no. Zeke could have worked if he wanted to. He was highly educated but didn't seem all that motivated. Ms. Kingsolver blames a job market that has the lowest unemployment rate in decades. Yes, student loans are untenable but again all of this was authorial intrusion and inorganic to the flow of the book.I could outline the plot but basically the novel deals with two families, both living in the same house at different times . The family living in the house currently consists of Willa and her husband, their two grown children, Tig and Zeke, Zeke's infant, and Willa's ill and cantankerous father-in-law. Willa is a contract journalist, Zeke is out of work and has no clue about how to care for a baby. Willa's husband was a tenured professor at a college that closed down and is now on a one year teaching assignment. Tig (short for Antigone) is a free spirited young woman trying to grab the world by its coat tails. The inhabitants of the house during the 19th century period are exceedingly boring. The only interesting character is Thatcher, a newly hired science teacher who believes in the theory of evolution. He befriends the woman next door who has a very scientific curiosity and a correspondence with Darwin.I hate being lectured to in novels. I read non-fiction and, even then, a good writer will let the reader draw some conclusions of their own. I felt that Ms. Kingsolver was desperate to get her disparate opinions across and over-compensated so much that it left the novel floundering. I realize that she cares deeply for her causes and respect that. She founded the Bellwether award for novelists who write books about social consciousness. However, there is a time and place for lecturing. Ms. Kingsolver is not a debut author. She is a fine and accomplished writer. I wish this novel had reflected her talents.

This is a lovely packaged/presented collection of timeless children stories that I purchased for my niece. I'm sort of the poor, loser uncle so I hope she remembers I bought her something nice.

I absolutely love the quality of this book, it is well done, absolutely beautiful, amazing collection of these classic books! So excited to have them, read them and share them with others! It show cases her art and stories perfectly! I will include pictures, also if anyone likes history, I recommend listening to The History Chicks podcast on the life of Beatrix Potter, knowing about her life, her talent in art, and her love for animals among other things adds so much depth to these stories! I am not even kidding! The podcast isn't boring at all it's funny and interesting and made me love these stories all the more! Excited to have this beautiful edition to pass down to my children, and for a good price! Arrived on time as well, brand new, no damage!! Extremely Happy!!

For Beatrix Potter lovers, this book is a must. It has all the stories, with excellent reproductions of her original illustrations. There also are little prefaces that tell something about each particular stories publication. The quality of the paper, binding, etc. is first class.I read these stories to my children when they were little and look forward to reading them to my little grandson when he is old enough.

This is a beautiful series but had no number 7 and two number 11's. It was a gift to a grandchild shipped overseas so it was too difficult to return it.

We always borrow the single-book version from the library. They're in high demand so I decided to buy the full version. I was fully aware of the difference in format, but I was still a bit dismayed. The trouble is the suspense is gone with this format. Your kids will keep looking to the other pics further on in the story. I suggest you get this only after you've read many, or all, of the books, and just want to re-read for the pleasure of it. Or if (like me) you can't afford the boxed version yet. I do plan on getting the boxed set as a holiday present later this year. But I wanted to get this now. My kids are always asking to read their favorite stories. And I use this as a handy reference for homeschool copywork.

The Amazon Kindle version is miserable to read. The pictures are too small and the text is off with the pictures. Just buy this one in print.

If you're human you will love reading the quintessential children's stories by Beatrix Potter. In fact, if you are a grandparent you will love reading them even more. Every child should have her collection to save for their children. My grandchildren love this little library and believe it or not they take a book out then return it to its box. I think they are quite proud to own those 23 volumes of books exactly the right size for small hands. The art work is spectacular in this set. Let's face it children read not just for the story but the artwork too. I love all those little tales.

I was worried after reading some comments and reviews here on Amazon about these books, but the set I bought for my daughter is beautiful! We haven't made it through all of the books yet, but the ten we have read are perfect. Very detailed illustrations, perfect coloring, no fading or other issues that some people have had with these books. Very pleased.

I used to read these as a child and now that I have my own daughter i can't wait to read this to her. Beautiful book!

It is well-illustrated.A couple things to note:- The books handles T’Challa’s father’s death, but does not directly say that he dies.- In terms of content, each page has short, simple sentences — usually one to three — and repetitive words, which makes it ideal for beginning readers.- The book also briefly discusses natural resources, which might be a good launching point for the relevant topic of colonization for kids who want to explore the meaning of the character.- The book centers only on the men’s stories, so if you’re looking for intersectional feminism that appears in the film, this isn’t that. Fingers crossed that some future stories might include that.

Love this book! I bought this book for my 3 year old son. He is very much into super heroes. The book is very good at keeping it somewhat as G to PG rated as possible. Although there are fighting scenes (which comes with the super hero territory) the book avoids going into details of dying or being killed. It is hard finding super hero books appropriate for young kids. This book is really good! Short enough to keep a child's attention yet long enough to learn about Black Panther.

I am loving that these books are also written for young readers. We gave this one away at a Black Panther viewing party. We want children to read books that interest them, especially boys!

I've never thought Ms.N.R. Walker could write this kind of story.It's not a lame romantic story that just uses some period of history as a background and has nothing to do with that.The story took place a little before Mount Vesuvius has erupted.And even though it's in [Romance] category, you don't have to worry there will be erotic scenes every 5 pages to make you feel sick as any other 'Romance' stories.Yes, there are many romantic scenes for the first half of the book, but around 30% of that portion is aimed for teasing, flirting, and foreplay which will make you feel awww...However, while they are romantic scenes, they're also being backgrounded by serious and high tension from many factors that will keep you at the edge.And then when the second half of the book started, you may forget this is a Romantic novel.The politics' dirty and twisting, betrayal of the betrayal, suspense, desperate feelings, hopelessness, loyalty and heroic actions all came in full force!!And Blood!!Who would think Ms.Walker could write a story with this much blood!?!, not to mention many cruel and horror scenes. At some point, I had to lay down the book and took a breath...``r(^^;)…And I was like...Wow...You have to read this book.It's really good. It's worth every minute that would be taken.It's quite long, but you will feel like you need more even when your heart is full.PS. To Mis.Walker,I don't know the actual information, but, was the 'F' word really being used since Roman times (laugh)?

I absolutely stand behind my statement, this for me was one of my top 20 books of 2018! I suppose it just rang all my bells. I never even considered skipping to the end (I consider sometimes but never actually do). I always enjoy Walkers books, but she out did herself on this one! I love tough guys who are squishy inside w/a heart. I love the Roman Era, M/M of course and Quintus & Kaeso were perfect! Kaeso had just the perfect bite to give it right back to Quintus and oh if Quinto didn't know how to handle Kaeso right back! Loved that Pompeii was touched upon! WHAT didn't I like...... Nothing, rare for me to find NO fault. I look forward to an audio of this book.

It was with some trepidation that I read this book; I am normally a huge N R Walker fan but was hesitant as she does not normally do time period pieces. Should have known better - it was well researched and very well written and really drew one into that timeline. The characters were realistic and the political intrigue was dirty and apt for that time. I can usually reread her works many times as I find them so enjoyable, and have no doubt I will reread this at some stage.

This has to be the best book in this genre that I've had the privilege of reading. It has everything I like. I imagine the characters as very muscled men. The book has heat beyond belief. It is also filled with love. It's a book that you won't be able to put down. It also reminds of the movie of Gladiator and the TV series of Spartacus. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

If you like Ancient Rome, gladiator honor and the scraping of oiled flesh excites you, this story will take you through an excellent adventure. The characters are endearing and the unfolding is purely NR Walker at her best.

4.5 stars. A very different story from N.R. Walker's hand. There were drama, blood and volcanoes. I will not judge the book for the historical accuracies, but the Roman culture was rendered somewhat authentic. At least it was authentic enough to embellish and advance the story. I liked the two main characters. They were very honorable and clean cut. In another author's lesser hand, they could have been quite boring. But they complemented each other nicely. They here sweet and sexy. Generally I like my men with some inner demons and multifaceted personalities, but it fits the storyline that the protagonists should be standing on the shoulders of heroes. Generally the good guys are good and the bad guys are bad... A classical face off whether it is cowboys or Roman soldiers.

NR Walker never disappoints with any of her books and this is no exception. Romance, mystery, and a beautiful story told in ancient Rome. Rush to buy this book you won't be disappointed!

If you've ever seen Spartacus on HBO, you've read this book. Like she wrote the book as she watched it. Same words, same phrasing, even the same character plots. Fair book, that's it.Writes using the British spelling, which distracts for an American English reader.
