Have to admit to being initially disappointed when I received this today, a favorite I recall reading to my sons, and realized I'd mistakenly ordered the board book rather than the hardcover. (Maybe I DO need that new pair of reading glasses after all!) I really don't care for how reviews for all formats are combined on a listing, because I'd find it hard to imagine that this board book would garner a 5 star rating from anyone who remembers the full story, since - if you're familiar with it - it entirely leaves out the part of the little bird asking an old car, boat and plane if any of them are his mother, and the baby bird's recounting his travels to his mother once he finally finds her. Obviously, board books are abbreviated, but this is REALLY abbreviated.Suppose the reason I'm giving this 4 stars is because I do think that - given its brevity and very simple words - it'd be a good little (and I do mean little at 5-3/4" x 4-1/4"x 1/2 thick) book for tiny hands to turn by themselves, with thick coated pages that are forgiving of occasionally sticky little fingers. Would be a nice little piece of reading material for a child just learning to read. It's my own fault, and I'll be ordering the hardback as well, but maybe you'd like to know exactly how it reads before making a decision for yourself:"A mother bird sat on her egg. The egg jumped. 'I must get something for my baby bird to eat!' she said. So away she went. Inside the nest, the egg jumped. It jumped and jumped and jumped. Until......out came a baby bird! 'Where is my mother?' he said. He did not see her anywhere. 'I will go and look for her,' he said. Out of the nest he went. Down, down, down! Plop! The baby bird could not fly. But he could walk. 'Now I will go and find my mother,' he said. 'Are you my mother?' the baby bird asked a kitten. The kitten just looked and looked. It did not say a thing. 'Are you my mother?' the baby bird asked a hen. 'No,' said the hen. 'Are you my mother?' the baby bird asked a dog. 'I am not your mother. I am a dog,' said the dog. 'Are you my mother?' the baby bird asked a cow. 'How could I be your mother?' said the cow. 'I am a cow.' The baby bird stopped to think. The kitten and the hen were not his mother. The dog and the cow were not his mother. 'I have a mother,' said the baby bird. 'I know I do. I will find her. I will. I WILL!' Just then the baby bird saw a big thing." (A power shovel.) "YOU are my mother!' he said. The big thing said, 'SNORT!' 'Oh no!' said the baby bird. 'You are not my mother. You are a scary snort!' The Snort lifted the baby bird up, up, up. Then something happened. The Snort put the baby bird right back in the tree. The baby bird was home! Just then the mother bird came back. 'I know who YOU are,' said the baby bird. 'You are not a kitten or a hen or a dog. You are not a cow or a Snort! You are a bird, and you are my mother!' "So you can decide for yourself if this is what you're looking for.
I am 52 years old. My mother read this to me as a child-about a million times! When she died in 2012 I bought a copy and wrote her a note inside and she was buried with it. That is how much this book means to me.I just bought another copy- for my first grandchild!!
This book is abridged. They took two or three pages out from the original. Very disappointing.
This is a great Book for early readers. I bought this to read to my 2 year old. I figured that board books would be better since she likes to tear out pages in hard cover books. This is a classic book that she enjoys but to anyone who does not know, this is not the full book. it is really condensed. which in my case is perfect because its short enough to where my toddler doesn't lose focus.
Baby loves this book, it's soft and interactive and apparently delicious judging from the amount of time it spends In her mouth.
Part of the book is upside down ...wtf??!
Our grandson is currently engrossed by two authors, Sergio Ruzzier (and I'll review his books soon), and P.D. Eastman. Before settling down for a nap, he'll take a few of his vehicles or toy animals and read them a story. Often it's this one, which, like all his favorites, he has memorized. The plight of a baby bird who can't find his mother is one that resonates with a toddler. The fact that the baby bird is undaunted by being unable to fly, is unfazed by the fact that he has no idea what his mother looks like, and isn't at all intimidated by the fact that every potential "mother" he encounters is far larger than he, appeals to a two-year-old's "I can do this by myself" mindset. P. D. Eastman had a wonderful gift for grabbing the attention of very young children with both story-line and illustrations, while simultaneously amusing adults. Hence, I never tire of any of his stories, particularly "Are You My Mother", which I have been reading aloud (first to my baby sister, then to my daughters, and now to my grandson) for 55 years.
I bought this for my one-year-old niece as part of her Christmas present. I had this book when I was a kid myself (I'm 39 now!) so I thought it'd be fun to start a little tradition. My niece loves books but her little baby hands aren't the gentlest, so I was very happy to find this in the form of a board book.

​This book proposes a semantic theory of conditionals that can account for (i) the variability in usages that conditional sentences can be put; and (ii) both conditional sentences of the form ‘if p, q’ and those conditional thoughts that are expressed without using ‘if’. It presents theoretical arguments as well as empirical evidence from English and other languages in support of the thesis that an adequate study of conditionals has to go beyond an analysis of specific sentence forms or lexical items. The resulting perspective on conditionals is one in which conditionality is located at a higher level than that of the sentence; namely, at the level of thought. The author argues that it is only through adopting such a perspective, and with it, a commitment to context-dependent semantics, that we can successfully represent conditional utterances as they are used and understood by ordinary language users. It will be of interest to students and scholars working on the semantics of conditionals in the fields of linguistics (especially semantics and pragmatics) and philosophy of language.Chi-Hé Elder is Lecturer in Linguistics in the School of Politics, Philosophy and Language and Communication Studies at the University of East Anglia, UK. Her research interests lie in the relationship between post-Gricean pragmatics and interactional pragmatics, with a particular focus on the semantics and pragmatics of conditionals.

Let me be clear: this is a well written and researched book. It tells A story well.But probably not THE story you expect (if you're male, anyway). It's not a war story, or a special ops story. It's a story about a group of women and how they feel about things. If it were a movie, it would be a chic flick.I bought the book because I had never heard about a special ops element called CST. That was surprising because I am a veteran and because I read A LOT of war books. I expected to read about the selection and specialized training this unheard of group endured. I expected detailed accounts of specific operations as a mechanism to show the reader the value the CST added to the special ops community.Instead, I read about how the women feel to be women, how they feel about training, how they feel about each other, how they feel bla bla bla. A ton of touchy feely crap that doesn't inform anything and isn't the least bit interesting. I read about makeup tips for a combat zone and how to braid your hair so it still tucks under a helmet. I learned how you shouldn't raise your voice to motivate slower runners because it might hurt their feelings.As far as I can tell, none of the CST's in this story ever fired their weapon in combat. The author did a great job of telling the reader how valuable the CST is to a team, but didn't SHOW the reader.So while I did lean about a program I never heard of before, I didn't get any of the training details, tactics, combat experiences, and impact on the enemy that you expect out of your typical war story.
An Important Story If you've ever wondered about women in the military, or about how special forces like Rangers work, this is the book for you. Or even if you have never had the slightest curiosity about these things, you'll find this book interesting, especially if you're a woman. I'm not going to spoil the ending, but the story focuses on Ashley white, who was a top athlete, and wanted to participate in really making a defference in some important role in the military. Her chance came when the US started a program for embedding women with the Rangers in Afghanistan, so that they could deal with women and children. It's a great insult to the Afghanis to have men not of the family, to be seeing or talking wo women. Hence the crucial need for a woman who could manage the rigors of the searches the Rangers did at night, but who could reassure the women and children that she was a female soldier, and would not let the men come into their sanctuary. You learn about the training, the rigors, the bonding of the women who did their training together, and took on this challenge. These are women of the highest caliber, and by the end of the book, you feel you know them intimately, going with them on mission, seeing what they do, enduiring what they endure, and being awed at their physical strength and skill. I highly recommend this book.
As a retired Command Sergeant Major who has served with Special Ops, I had always been skeptical of women in combat. This book riveted me. I could not put it down. As tears fell from my face, I think I finally understood that women have the deep inside burning to be the best for their country. God bless all of the women who will have to put up with winning over not only the men they'll serve with but the other women who don't have that Alpha drive, that deep got to do it, can't let me team down spirit. I think every girl in America should read this book. By now the guys that count, the special operators already know about them.
This book is simply excellent. The language is accessible; the story is a page-turner. But don't be fooled - it is anything but a "simple" book. I knew nothing about the military, and even less about women in the military (except that lately they've been characterized as victims). A friend with similar tastes as mine encouraged me to read this so I did. Ms. Lemmon's book opened my eyes in a skilled and powerful way. She uses the story of a women's special ops program - and the stories of several women participants - to take the reader through the complexities of military structure, politics, culture, and everyday life. She evens shines a light on the experience of one woman's husband and family in the immediate aftermath of her loss. And yet, with all the texture and background, the story thread remains clear and unbroken throughout. Somehow, despite all the military lingo and profiles of strong, self-disciplined women, the book moved me to tears by the end.I also read Dressmaker of Khair Khana - with these powerful and inspiring stories, Ms. Lemmon is clearly on a mission to change the world through heroic - and true! - portrayals of women. I look forward to whatever she writes next.
I don’t often read a story like Ashley’s story. It made me profoundly proud, and profoundly sad. Proud because of the strength of Ashley and her (female) colleagues. Their courage, their patriotism, their drive to be the best, and desire to make the world better….even in war.It made me sad because it is clear that war means that others of us have failed, we have failed to find other ways to resolve problems without resorting to massive violence. As someone who has not served in the armed forces (my draft number was high enough when I turned 18 that Viet Nam was not one of the realities I had to face) I am deeply humbled by the sacrifices made by those who have and serve today to keep me and my family safe.The first part of the book tells the story of the many women who answered the call. Ashley, Amber, Kate and Tristan, to name a few. It tells of their personal journeys and their journey become CSTs. It is compelling and uplifting.It war people die, many, many, many people die. This story tells the story of one in a very vivid way. I am glad that I was alone when I read the last few chapters, because, through this book I knew Ashley and her fellow CST soldiers, and I felt in what must be a small part of the pain and sorry felt by her husband, her family, and her fellow CST solders.Read it to be inspired by her courage, read it to be motivated to do more to make such sacrifices not required in the future.

Stuart Thornton fell in love with the California coast while working at the Big Sur Ranger Station after college. There, he advised visitors on every topic, from campsites to restaurants. I liked it very much before and during our trip around California. Easy to use, a lot of useful information and most of all in color (in which every guide should be but not always is).
Apparently California roads end at San Francisco. Bought this book because I really liked the Oregon Coast Moon book. We are planning a road trip to Northern California and Southern Oregon. This book provided no information for Northern California.
My wife and I were moving from San Diego to Seattle and decided to make a road trip out of it.From the planning stage through the end of the trip this book was extremely helpful at giving us concrete ideas of where to go as well as helping us plan a trip that fit in our timeline. With the help of this book we visited LA, Big Sur, San Francisco and Yosemite in only 7 days. For each city and region, there were 1-3 day itineraries which we could easily customize and add to our plan.The only thing I wish it had was more info on the region north of San Francisco like point Reyes or the northern redwood forests.Great guide if you want to plan a road trip quickly and have limited time for the road trip but want to pack in as much as possible.As for our trip, it was one of the best experiences of my life. The book helped us plan the whole trip in advance could spend our time sightseeing and enjoying ourselves instead of worrying about what to do next. Especially great advice on checking out Big Sur which was one of my favourite parts of the trip.

About the Author
Christine Lefrou is a graduate of ENS (Ecole Normale Supérieure), the elite French institution of higher education and research, and currently a university lecturer at the PHELMA engineering school (Physics, Applied Physics, Electronics and Materials Science), part of the Grenoble Institute of Technology (INP). She teaches electrochemistry on core education courses, as well as on a wide array of continuing education courses. Her research work to date has mainly focused on applying the concept of modeling material transport to the field of electrochemistry (batteries and electroanalysis).Pierre Fabry is a university-trained physicist, who was formerly a professor at Grenoble University (Université Joseph Fourier). He has taught electrochemistry and the structure of materials at university level, (undergraduate and master’s degrees) as well as at engineering schools, and on adult training courses. His research work has focused specifically on the subject of electrochemical solids for high-temperature energy storage systems and electrochemical sensors for biomedical and environmental applications.Jean-Claude Poignet was formerly a Professor of electrochemistry at the Grenoble Institute of Technology (INP). It's really a great source for people who want to know more about electrochemistry.However the author writes that EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) is not a part of electrochemistry. I agree. But there is (ECM) Electrochemical Machining which is a part of electrochemistry. This is a method for removing metal by electrolyte and electrical current.
