It’s a pretty good book, nice pictures interspaced with personal anecdotes, stories about builders, and build directions. Fair warning: Shane loves the crude, low fidelity end of homemade instruments. So you won’t find useful build info on better quality instruments here, nothing on truss rods or dimensions on six string versions. For that matter, there’s not a wealth of dimensional info for anything; Shane likes the more rough and tumble, anything goes method. If this describes you, then this is your book. If this isn’t you, but you’re still interested in cigar box guitars, you’ll still enjoy reading the book, it just won’t be very useful. You’ll probably see something that you’ll be interested in building or playing anyway.

Outstanding! If you have any interest at all in cigar box guitars, either as a player, a builder, or a fan, this is the book to get. We’ll written, entertaining, fun to read, and the photos are beautiful. Just order it!

Great book, not only for the instructions, but it's also just a fun book to look through. The instructions are well detailed and in difficulty. There's even one (The Portland Cowboy guitar) that be built easily by the power tool deprived amongst us.

I have planned a journey to Gettysburg for years, and when I finally do make it to that historical location, I have added one additional stop – Speal’s Tavern, in New Alexandria, Pennsylvania.Speal’s Tavern is owned by author Shane Speal’s father, and along with a serving of beer, one can also visit the museum display of cigar box guitars, with builders from all around the world contributing. After reading Mr. Speal’s book, it would be fun to see the handiwork of other creators.I had envisioned a book of a down-and-dirty collection of hand-made guitars, a combination of Appalachian style instruments made from whatever materials were at hand. The author’s book was far more interesting than anything I could have imagined. Although Mr. Speal entertains us with quirky stories from his personal history, the meat and potatoes are the pictures and descriptions of the guitars and other items.The descriptions don’t stop with the physical details of the instruments. This is a how-to, get-your-hands-involved book, and includes lists of materials and tools needed along with step-by-step instructions on crafting a guitar of your very own. Be ready to be instructed, amused, and wowed, as the author moves from cigar boxes to wine containers to using the old metal ham containers! Readers are encouraged to get involved, and let your imagination take you to new ideas. There are plenty of color pictures, and most people will have the necessary tools already at hand.The book moves on to other creations, teaching us how to build a washtub bass, foot stompers, lap steel guitars, and other interesting variations (gotta mention the beer can microphone). If your buddies are playing their instruments too loud, never fear, as there are instructions how to build homemade pre-amps as well as adding pick-ups to all your new instruments.Whether or not this book turns you into a fan or a DIY cigar box guitar-building fanatic, it’s a fun and entertaining read written by someone who enjoys what he is doing. This is the best business book I have read in a long time. Unlocking the Customer Value Chain proposes a novel framework for understanding the rise of tech-driven disruption across myriad industries in the last 20 years, placing a strong emphasis not on the technology itself but how it drives value for consumers.The author identifies commonalities between the way tech has changed the competitive landscape for companies as diverse as retailers, telcos, and auto manufacturers. Initially, I was surprised to learn that something insightful could be said across such a wide array of situations, but was ultimately persuaded by Teixeira's thoroughness in laying out his case. I suspect the book's framing is somewhat less valuable in a B2B context, but that is not an area I can speak to with much confidence.As someone who works in technology, the insights here will be especially valuable as I attempt to assess competitive threats to my employers's business. I think others will feel the same, and highly recommend this book.

This is my first review on amazon. I was impressed by the book review in the Economist magazine. Normally, despite a favorable review, I will often do more homework or read a kindle sample. The review in the Economist was great but the examples used in the review certainly resonated with me. The Kindle book did not disappoint. All the business professors are generally good at articulating the fundamental constructs or principles versus anecdotal stories. The book is perceptive at the underlying principles of digital disruption. Enjoyable read.

This book and the Professor’s class at HBS really helped me understand the what, where and how of creating value for customers along the value chain. So much valuable insights and such a good read for anyone interested in building successful businesses in today’s ever-changing environment.

For a business to succeed, its leaders must understand how to replace a competitor's "link" within that chain with its own and then secure it against all threats.

As a tech entrepreneur schooled by Eric Reis' "The Lean Startup", I tend to think of technology as being the driving force behind the success of my business. The book is excellent in educating you on the CVC and how decoupling drives consumer disruption. I wish I had know this behavior pattern before as it would have been helpful to understand and most importantly know the actions we needed to take to thwart or mitigate those decoupling efforts competitors are making. In the future, I'll use this knowledge to build models to disrupt my competitors by laser focusing on the CDC first, then on how to deploy the business model or technology to enable the disruption. I highly recommend!

When Asa comes home it isn’t have we wanted to come back he’s not whole, will Callie still want to be with him even though he is a shell of a man? Can Callie convince him that he is everything she has always wanted?

Best friend's sibling plots are tricky, that being said, it's one of my favorite tropes...when done right. This book by this duo is pretty darn close and I enjoyed it.Asa and Callie have known each other for years, her being his younger sister, Crosby's, best friend and all. Asa and his best friend, Weston (see A Perfect Mess for his and Crosby's story), and the two girls have grown up together, and both boys are fully aware of how independent Callie and Crosby are. While Weston is protective of the latter due to his own growing feelings for her, Asa takes his role in watching over them quite seriously, and as Callie matures, his view of her does too.However, it's not until she's in her teens that he realizes just how much. From there, Callie herself begins to see Asa as more than her best friend's older brother and the protective eyes always watching over them. The kiss the two share changes everything, but it also brings about guilt in Asa due to her age and their mutual connection to Crosby.Asa makes the decision to enlist and spends a few years elsewhere, with no contact between him and Callie. His feelings for her don't change, but instead grow, and then he's injured. When he returns, a newer mature Callie is his therapist and he, yet again, sees her in a different light.Their bond grows deeper as she helps him recuperate, but he wants more...he wants everything.What will Crosby think? How can Asa expect her to accept their relationship when he behaved badly upon learning of her and his best friend? What will Asa do now that he's been medically discharged? What does their future hold? Will it be a HEA?One-click now and follow along as two people embark on a different path...together. I love that both were virgins, each only wanting to be and waiting for the other. Yet, I can't help but question Asa's memory of his past as he did suffer a traumatic brain injury in the service, so... what if he just forgot he was with another woman? I doubt that's the case, but it does beg the question. I enjoyed this story, however, there were two issues I had with this. First, and this bothered me the most, Asa's feelings had already begun changing for Callie, and the night they shared their first kiss, she was crying over another boy, one she wanted to be her first kiss, her first everything, or if not him, someone else. She never thought about it being Asa. I do not like that she wanted those things with anyone else, that Asa found her crying over it not happening. There are those that would want to throw their e-reader had it been the reverse. Second, they were close, yet there was absolutely no contact for three, I think it was, years? Third, Asa and Crosby's dad is sick, and it's alluded to that being terminally so, yet we never learn of his fate. He's mentioned in the first epilogue, as in Weston and Crosby's wedding being moved up because they weren't sure the dad would make it. And then...nothing. There's a reference to the mom in another epilogue, but not about her losing her husband, how she's coping without him, or if he made a miraculous recovery - hey, you never know, it is fiction after all.**I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.**

4.5 stars. I had been “patiently” waiting for this book *shakes head*. This book was worth the wait. It takes you through Asa and Callie when they were kids and Asa taking care of her and his little sister. Then when she’s a freshman and he’s a senior, they share her first kiss, all of which was nice and pg, a very sweet kiss. These two never get over their attraction and they never move on from it either. Callie later promises Asa her virginity, which she does save for him. Asa goes to college, but later enlist in the Marines. During that time, he and Callie do not keep in touch, this was the only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars.Fast forward and his back from the military and injured, physically and mentally. Callie helps him through and nurses him back to health. So much happens in this book, with all the emotions. This writing duo did such a great job on my Asa’s book. It was a safe read, no om or ow drama. Two virgins...yup, you read that right...two. Baby batter, multiple epilogues and an hea.I voluntarily read and reviewed this book.

Although the story and characters are tied to a previous book (A Perfect Mess) and some of what happens to Asa is described there, this can work as a stand alone. It will just feel more complete if you read the other book first.Callie is the best friend to Asa's little sister, and it was sweet to watch Asa's attitude change from responsible older brother to conflicted teen (when his feelings evolved, but he knew Callie was too young) to present day where Asa is injured and back from the military; and Callie is assigned to help him rehab.I would have loved to see this as a longer length novel so that his rehab could be explored a little more. I feel that his struggle with it, and how they work through that as a couple, would have really added depth to the relationship from a reader's point of view.Overall, I enjoyed the story and the sweet moments made me smile like a sap. I was provided a complimentary copy in exchange for an unbiased review.

We met Asa and Callie in the book A Perfect Mess. Callie is best friends with Asa’s sister. Asa has felt the need to protect Callie since they were kids.Once Callie grows into a young woman it’s hard for Asa to come to terms with his new feelings for herAsa goes off to the military and comes back a changed man. Callie is enlisted to help bring him back to the man he was.Sparks fly, feelings are finally spoken about and a romance ensues.Now if you read A Perfect Mess you know Asa’s reaction to his best friend and sister hooking up. You’ll have to read this book to find out how his sister reacts in turn to his romance with Callie.

If the purpose or goal of the book is to demonstrate how to use Greek in understanding a verse or a section of verses, then this book is five stars. It has shown through bite size forms how Greek helps in understanding a passage. Having the verse or verses printed in the beginning of each reflection helps in encouraging reading and even translating that verse or verses before reading the explanations.This book has 52 reflections written by various NT scholars. The back cover states that it can be used as a weekly devotional or as a supplemental resource throughout a semester or several courses. Each reflection has 2-3 pages (last page is usually less than half a page). The quality of helpfulness of these reflections (Greek insights) varies. Some are very helpful and some are harder to grasp the Greek significance but overall, Greek insights were great.But for the purpose (or purposes) indicated, it needs improvement through additional information. The stated purpose is to strengthen one’s walk with the Lord in the need to know the reason for studying Greek (p.11). The editors also hope to motivate students to endure Greek studies and will make them interested and motivated in this social media age (p.11-12). It is stated at the back cover that these devotions will inspire the reading and meditation of the Greek NT.Connecting the insights in Greek in how it can be significant or apply to the reader needs improvement (about half or so has some form of connecting application/significance to readers but only few did it sufficiently clear). It is good to know that a participle could be causal or concessive. But what application could be derive from either interpretation and specifically from the proposed meaning?As for helping students endure and be interested and motivated in Greek studies, more help could have been provided. With many scholars in this project, several things could have been included. Scholars could have shared their suggestions how to keep up with Greek and use it for daily living. Maybe different reading plans, from few passages a day to reading through the NT a year. Maybe a suggestion of verses to memorize and an explanation of how to meditate on Greek insights (Do you try to interpret the meaning in English and dwell on that or do you reflect on the Greek itself?). With a collection of these many scholars, we can learn much besides the reflections, their habits and practices, wisdom and advice that are varied that it will help different students and pastors.It would be also good to have a glossary of terms and select vocabulary (occurrence of 10 or less, maybe?). Intermediate students will understand the terms and may be able to translate but beginning students will grapple with the meaning of terms and translating some words (or even parsing). Having several resources open or at hand as suggested like first class grammars may make the process like an academic study than a reading that motivates students to keep on learning and use their Greek. It will also make this book less handy if it is too dependent on having other resources at hand.I think Daily Dose of Greek videos and the weekly Monday with Mounce will help students and graduates keep up with Greek studies for free but these are not intended as devotionals (nor necessarily exegetical). So to make this volume distinct and profitable and worth its retail price of $16.99 (less listed here) as intended, the devotional aspect must be improved including selecting the appropriate verses (maybe shorter) or focus (maybe grammar or word meaning; finding the main verb or wordplays maybe good for study but not study with devotional flavor). Other helpful guidance to motivate and to assist students to endure in studying and keeping Greek must be added.

This is a fine book for a beginning to intermediate Greek student, and is excellent for pastors or missionaries who have had Greek training in seminary. Duvall brings together some fine evangelical scholars to produce a short book of 52 devotions on the Greek New Testament. The devotions all begin with a Greek text and run in the common order of our New Testaments from Matthew to Revelation. Each devotion is 2-3 pages long. One of the aspects of the book I most enjoyed was the variety of approaches the authors took in the devotions. Sometimes the devotional point was made through a discussion of lexical data, sometimes literary analysis, sometimes verb tense. The grammatical and lexical perspectives presented through the devotions showed how richly rewarding the study of the Greek text can be for the committed student.This book will encourage many to take up their Greek again or to persevere in their studies. Of course, a book like this can not replace the necessary work of grammatical study and daily reading of the Greek text, but it can be a great encouragement in the journey.

I think it is generally true that finding a new tool in whatever area you have a real passion is about as exciting as it gets! A gardener who discovers a new way to dig or a house painter who finds a faster, smoother way to apply paint are both almost thrilled to get to work!Several have commented specifically on the content of "Devotions on the Greek New Testament." Let me add my voice by saying this tool is a must for every pastor who is in the pulpit from Sunday to Sunday. Here we find fifty-two great "sermon starters" (for want of a better word) that help one begin where the beginning of each message should take place -- in the depths of the text.Of course, all tools carry warnings ("Do not use iron on clothes while wearing them") and other sensible instructions. This tool is for use in the study process. Few in your audience will want you to read to them from this book. Warning: Do not say "As it says in the Greek" when preaching this material.However, have you ever considered the "If" clauses in Gamaliel's statement to the Sanhedrin? Or the significance of the "you and the you" in John 1? This book will make you stop and ponder what is really going on in some very well-known texts. From that personal pondering a truly marvelous message can be developed.Sure, we can all download a "sermon-lite" from a huge variety of websites. Or we can get back into the business of growing true disciples for the kingdom by feeding on the Word ourselves before feeding it to others.My only disappointment will be if the editors fail to produce an annual version of these devotions.

You got meat!Pull-out-your-Greek-resources-type meat.Many rich insights are in here to be discovered; soul satisfying truths to be mined.Be sure to read with pen in hand to underline the gold.I found exegetical Greek gold on practically every page (and I've been at this for decades).Here are just a few highlights among many to search out once you get yours:Luke 2:4-5 (p.33)Luke 23:34 (p.38)Ephesians 5:18-22 (p.85)Colossians 3:4 (p.102)Hebrews 10:24-25 (p.125)Revelation 5:7 (p.145).Blessings.

For the trained Greek exegete, this is a fun reading of the New Testament in select devotional passages. The average layman would need to ignore the Greek text, and simply accept the devotional as it is presented. The volume does, however, present "unique" readings not found in most good translations. "Unique" interpretations are always suspect because all scholars stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us; a truly unique reading would mean that everyone else had missed the intent of the author until now. For the reader of Greek, or those with the tools to dig out meanings, this is a worthwhile reading. I wish it we in Kindle format as well.
