I'm a grandmother and watching the movie didn't appeal to me because I don’t like violence until two male friends and my son insisted I had to see it. I was completely drawn in, especially when the real relationship between the protagonist and Tyler was revealed. To me, it was more of a psychological story. The musings about consumerism, the downward spiral of the main character, the creation of something that spins out of control, and the followers willing to do anything to be part of something were fascinating. His complicated relationship with the only female character who confounds, irritates and draws him is woven into a brilliant story. So I had to read the book. It’s a little different and the ending is different. But I was as drawn in to the book as the film. I also enjoyed the Afterword, which gave some background to the creation and aftermath of this book. Great writing and a compelling plot.

It was nearly impossible for a movie or television show to upstage the book. With Chuck Paluhniak’s “Fight Club,” it was definitely a close battle.As usual, though, the original product won. Nothing against the movie, which is one of my favorites, but there is no way to inject the rawness of Mr. Paluhniuk’s prose into the entire film.The writing contains the power of this book, a first-person tale of one man’s battle with the futility of a life that is good, just not good enough. The author brings us into the story just as the main character begins his fall into the rabbit hole, dragging the reader along. It is interesting that the main character never uses his name, though as a plot device this reinforces the characterization.For those wondering if the book can pull off an ending that can compete with the movie, I can attest the final chapter is very satisfying and is one more reason to pick up the print version. Five well-deserved stars.

It is true, the book is always better than the movie. Watching this movie in 1999 in New York City Theaters and I remember how much influence on my way of thinking, to challenge the hamster wheel, just as I was starting college.Of course the book is way cooler after you watched the movie, as you have Brad Pitt in your head and the other amazing characters from the movie - honestly I am not sure how much I would have enjoyed the book if I didn’t already have the amazing visual experience from watching the video.Yet by reading the book, you get so much more depth and feeling. Those quick 5 second clips in the movie now are written out in pages and you get the more granular feel of what is happening in Tyler and the character’s head (whose name we never know!).The ending is different in the movie and the book - and I saw that in the review when deciding to invest in reading the book or not - and that alone is worth going through it.What was surprising was how close the book and the movie are! Some of the exact lines are right from the book, and for the most part it is fairly straight along the the same storyline.As Fight Club is one of my favorite movies of all time, I of course will enjoy the book and it gives a new angle and dimension - I should probably watch the movie (yes again) to more fully compare the book and movie.

Let's talk about Fight Club. I was borderline unhealthily obsessed with the movie version of Fight Club when I first saw it at 16. In many ways, the book is better. Fight Club deals with self-loathing, repressed impulses, and the hypocritical and meaning-starved existence many of us in the developed world feel we live in a manner which never fails to be fun, engaging, and artistic. In addition to the message, as I've gotten older and read more novels I've come to appreciate the style in which Fight Club is written more and more.PS if this book ends up resonating with your latent aggressive impulses, try boxing, kickboxing or Jiu Jitsu. (But please don't blow stuff up)

I collect all video game art books. This one is in the top three I've gotten next to The Art of Dragon Age Inquisition and Th Art of Assassins Creed Odyssey.It's a heavy duty book. The pages are thick and beautifully glossy. The cover feels like soft leather (it's not leather, it's just as soft though). It has that wonderful new book smell (yall know what I mean, dont judge lmfao)The extras in the box are fine. I dont really care about those things but they're nice. The box it came in is an extra bonus for me.The art is stunning. I purposely didnt share pictures, just buy this book it's worth it. I'm ordering another one to keep sealed like my collection tells me to lmfao

The artwork is beautiful and it’s great to see how it evolved. There is one item included in this edition that is of poor quality. The copper art plate looks and feels like it’s made of cardboard with a vinyl cover.

Although I ordered this before I played the demo, as a sucker for art books I figured I'd keep my order open even though I was ultimately let down by the game itself. I'm glad I did, this art book is beautiful. The presentation is typical Dark Horse limited edition fare, they have a great track record in my book as far as art books go. More than that, what exists within this book are the bones of something that could have been a truly game changing, worthy successor from the studio behind the Dragon Age and Mass Effect series, the latter of which I am a die hard fan. If this game had been set up as a single player, character driven, RPG style game like the original Mass Effect trilogy, this could have been amazing. The "Origins" section of this book is ripe with beautifully creative ideas and a fresh take on the sci-fi game genre. Some of the cast aside designs, locations, fauna, and ideas are mind shatteringly good. Each faction that exists in the game was supposed to have a city designed around their lore you could travel to and explore, instead the entirety of your allies were jammed into one area. I don't know that we'll ever know what truly happened to Anthem during it's 6 year development cycle, maybe too many cooks, maybe overwhelming pressure from a publisher that has a bad track record of hamstringing creative studios and preventing them from producing passionate, focused works of modern playable art. What is clear in the concept art contained in this book is that the original idea for Anthem was going to be radically different from what was delivered. I'm happy I picked this up, but it's a shame the original idea they had, drifted so far when the final product was delivered.

Road trips have provided the fodder for many photographers, especially in America. The Open road offers an excellent overview of the genre and places the major names in American road photography in context, both chronological order and with the major art photography world at the time the photos were taken. So, the book works as a history of road trips, yet it is much more. The photos that chosen for the book make for an attractive and compelling photo book on their own. The introductory essays for each photographer offer a nice introduction to their photography and methodology, though I do have to agree that the typography in those essays is awful. The ornamentation (not technically ligatures, which connect two letters) on the letter s is particularly distracting. Fortunately, that distraction pales when we get a look at the photos.Obviously, no one volume can cover all the good photographer who have published compendium of road trip photos. The classic photographers are covered, like Frank, Winograd, Friedlander, Eggleston, Meyerowitz and Shore. The selection of current photographers is necessarily more a reflection David Campany's personal tastes. How could it be otherwise?The selection of images representing each photo book that he chose reflects nicely on the original source books, three of which I own. While no short selection of images can convey the breadth of the original road photo books, the ones here do reflect the tone of the originals and give enough of a sense of the photographer's work that we can choose which to pursue further.The printing is excellent. Colors look true to the films the photographers used. Black and white photos display a good tonal range. All in all, the prints are compelling. The binding is of good quality as is the printing.One feature that I love is an unofficial appendix that shows where each photographer made the original photos. There's a separate map for each photographer. This is a book that I will consult often and treasure.

Over the years I have accumulated a fair number of photography books. THE OPEN ROAD is already one of my favorites, and it surely will be one of those that I return to most often.The bulk of the book consists of photographs selected from road trip portfolios or books by eighteen different photographers. Many of the photographs are manifestly "open road" photographs, in the sense that they feature road vistas or scenes; some bear the clear indicia of having been taken from inside an automobile. But whether or not obviously an "open road" photograph, all were taken during an American road trip (some, for example, are motel room interiors).The first of the featured photographers is Robert Frank. The seven photographs of his are from his now classic book of 1959, "The Americans", which sported an introduction by the archetypal "open roader" Jack Kerouac. The last of the eighteen is the dual-headed TONK (the Swiss team of Taiyo Onorato and Nico Krebs), from their book "The Great Unreal", published in 2009. In between are such famous photographers -- famous in the sense that at least I was familiar with their work -- as Garry Winogrand, William Eggleston, Lee Friedlander, Joel Meyerowitz, and Joel Sternfeld. But some were new to me, and I appreciated being exposed to their work -- in particular, Jacob Holdt, Alec Soth, and Justine Kurland. (I list all eighteen photographers in a comment.)The book begins with a thirty-page, generously illustrated essay by David Campany. The purpose of that essay is to explore the cultural context leading up to Robert Frank's book. It goes back to the Rand McNally Photo-Auto Guides, launched in 1906, and discusses influential photographers of the American scene who were forerunners of Robert Frank, such as Walker Evans, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Esther Burley. Then, for each of the eighteen highlighted photographers in the main section of the book, Campany provides a one-page introduction, placing that photographer's work within, or as an extension of, the tradition of American road photography. These essays by Campany are excellent.By the way, Campany traces the phrase "the open road" to Walt Whitman's poem "Song of the Open Road", from "Leaves of Grass". Whitman and his quintessential book of American poetry undoubtedly gave the phrase its enormous and resonant currency, but I suspect that it existed before Whitman (who was, after all, an inveterate "borrower" of mid-nineteenth-century Americana). In any event, as the title for this review I have used a line from Whitman's poem, as it seems to capture much of the ethos of American road photography.The book itself is over-sized (12 x 10 inches and about 5 pounds in weight) and handsome. The prints are of the high standards that we have come to expect from Aperture. There never is more than one photograph on a single page. A few of the photographs are printed across a two-page spread, so impeccably that there are no "gutter" breaks in the image. Page numbers and photograph captions are discrete. THE OPEN ROAD would make for an ideal coffee-table book, all the more so because, unlike many coffee-table books, it would be enjoyed by almost anyone who plops on the nearby sofa.

This gorgeous book surveys a very specific subgenre of photography -- photographic series based on road trips through America. It starts off with a short history of the American road, an even shorter history than I realized. At the start of the twentieth century, the road system had fallen into disuse (over 90% of intercity roads were unpaved) because of the dominance of trains. But as the auto came into use, the road trip came into being, and almost from the start photography was a key part of the road trip. The pictures in the early part of the book are fascinating, as is the history of the American road, and the American road trip.The heart of the book, however, is the central section, which shows road trip photographs by 19 highly accomplished photographers. It tells us a little about each photographer, talks about each road trip, and then shows the pictures. Some of the photographers are giants in the field: the presentation starts with a group of photographs from Robert Frank's iconic "The Americans", proceeds through Lee Friedlander and Garry Winograd, and moves on to Ryan McGinley. Some are perhaps less well known -- at least they were to this reader -- but their work is stunning. Most of the photographers are American, but not not all of them, and a few are women. Having seen their work in this book, there are several photographers whose work I want to investigate further, especially Alec Soth and Taiyo Onorato+Nico Krebs.And the book is definitely more than the sum of its part. Earlier photographers have influenced later ones, but the overall determinant is the American road, that great fact and great metaphor. Since we retired a decade ago, my husband and I have taken many road trips, all over the U.S. I suppose that part of what we were doing was looking for America. So are the photographers whose work is shown in this book, and their visions are unforgettable.

I like the format and how the author approached the topic. I like the citation of all the laws. But, it’s a small read and left me wanting more. That’s not the authors fault but I wish this book had delved into additional areas and expanded its review further.

Too short but well done. The author obviously knows his subject and explains it well. I look forward to reading other books by this author.

In this compact paperback, Ron Moseley shares his concepts of "the Kingdom of God," and his analysis of the Torah laws that are applicable to a non-Jew in the modern world. He distills these down to 179 laws that he discusses in categories, such as personal obligations, interpersonal obligations, and Divine service. Moseley brings to this study graduate and post-graduate studies completed at both Christian and Jewish institutions. Each chapter closes with a "teaching review" or quiz.I found a number of interesting points in the book, insights, and food for thought. The most curious statement for me is on p.21. He writes: "There is no indication that believers are to hold a synagogue or church service on the sabbath." Contrast that with his statement on p. 36 from the section on Care of Animals. He writes: "There are 42 different animals mentioned in scripture. God not only had Adam name each animal, but declared that his covenant includes them (Gen 2:20; 9:9-10). Even the sparrow which falls to the ground is noted by God (Matt. 10:29; Luke 12:6). Not only is man to rest on the Sabbath, but the same provisions are made for the animals (Exod. 20:10). ..." So even animals are to enjoy the sabbath, but we are not to assemble? I am thinking of Hebrews 10:25. This demonstrates the difficulty of condensing so much in just 54 pages--so much must be sacrificed for brevity. I think a reader can recognize why the author leaves some threads loose. At the same time, I think some of the analysis is unfinished. At least, that is the feeling I had in reading the book, which is why I gave it three stars.

This book is primarily written to be used in a classroom setting with study questions following its brief chapters. It's primary purpose is to show how one can apply God's instructions (i.e. the law) to modern day situations. In the process, the author briefly expounds upon what the phrase "Kingdom of Heaven," may have meant to those individuals living in the time of Christ. This book is extremely short and can be read by most in one setting (It took me about an hour) so don't expect an extremely deep work. However, it certainly is worth reading if you are looking for some supporting reading about the Hebraic roots of Christianity.

A magnificent work here on the third and final installation of the immensely popular series of narratives,The Craven Silence. I've read Van der Leek and Wilson's work now for several years, and appreciate each and every effort, but for those who haven't, I think the first thing you might notice is just how intelligent they are. This is a boon for obvious reasons, but perhaps the most beneficial asset as regards a quick mind and this case, is the ability to quickly separate at least some of what's relevant, from what isn't. This is invaluable in a case fraught with a voluminous amount of clutter, any number of rabbit holes one could foolishly scurry down at any turn, and one that presents with existing opposing theories. This is no easy feat, but tackle the job though they do, they do it brilliantly, and with aplomb. A trademark of their work, is the effort they put into research, and in my personal experience in reading other books on the Jon Benét case, this effort sets them apart from others. This brings me to the second point a new reader will readily notice and appreciate, which is their work ethic and determination. They provide supporting documentation to accompany any and all of their reasoning at each step along the way, dots are connected, and the end result is a theory of this case that finally has legs. Turns out, this case wasn't nearly as complicated as it initially seemed, but just needed the help of a couple of independent thinkers to apply a healthy degree of discernment, and in some cases, skepticism, to the existing facts of the case, and then present it all in a cohesive manner to the reader. Van der Leek and Wilson have certainly done that. They can also write. This is a gift that truly can't be underestimated in any genre, but is especially the case in true crime, where good writing is sometimes lacking. With their objectivity, reliance on existing facts and new ones they've most certainly established, these two, Van der Leek and Wilson, could have made darn good detectives should they have chosen the profession. As luck would have it, though, they didn't, and readers everywhere can raise a glass to that.

Read the 3 installments on Kindle, and I think you brought an intuitive, intelligent enthusiasm to the interrogation via the psychology of the children. It's underestimated how much damage the sibling rivalry and parental short-sightedness does to the child's personality (and the adults who go with the flow!) It's so clear, in this telling of yours, that there were always two "only child" offspring in the house: first a son who is the only child until a sister comes along. He becomes the "other" child while she is given the turn at being the "only." If only the father had adopted his own boy as fiercly as she sank her teeth into her girl. There'd still have been damaged young people growing up- but they'd at least have grown up physically together and possibly lived equally long lives.

I was pretty hard on the first book in my review, but after completing the series it did get some better. Throughout, there are refences and quotes that don't seem to relate. They talk repeatedly about the bikes but then never follow through on connecting them. They hint that the Stines are involved but never explain their theory. In all the books there is a persistent theme of "we're going to cover this topic in another book" in effort to get you to buy more books. To me this is a cheesy bait and sell scheme which never delivers. A good writer puts the time and effort in to research the topic, compile information and present it in a susinct, complete and understandable way. You will not find that in these books.On the other hand, they do present a good discussion of the psychological side of this case although they never bring it full circle. They have also compiled quotes from different interviews that show discrepancies in the Ramsey's statements.In the end, I did learn things about the case, and considered things I hadn't thought of before, therefore I guess, I'm glad I read it but wish it had been in one book that had been more organized and should have cost around $10 USD.

Very informative. Was not aware of a lot of information you gave. I watched the Dr Phil show and I could not believe how Burke presented himself. There is definitely something wrong with him. He had a diabolical look on his face which said it all. I do believe he killed his sister, and the parents covered it up.

I have always felt sad for the beautiful girl child Jon Benet and I have always wanted to know what happened to her. This book helps to find the answers. I was surprised to learn there was a previous 911 call made from the house during a Christmas party on the 23rd of December. What happened that night? Did Burke do something to Jon Benet? As we saw on the CBS documentary Burke had previously hit Jon Benet below the eye with a golf club. And as we saw on Dr Phill's documentary there's something not quite right about Burke. The revelation that fibre from Patsy's jumper was found on the duct tape on Jon Benet's mouth makes me feel incredulous that the parents got away with covering up what really happened to their daughter. More so to protect their own culpability than there sons and in doing so they denied Jon Benet her truth. There are many more revelations in the book particularly regarding the Ramsey's friends the Stines. It really is worth while reading the whole series. As I was reading I was happy that my father treated my sister and I equally and there was no sibling rivalry. If it was her birthday he would buy her something small too. My sister is my best friend. I am grateful to have had a warm working class upbringing rather than a cold, rich one. Love is more important than expensive toys.

Again a must read....ready for the next book...their viewpoints make a lot of sense...viewpoints I never would have considered ...

I bought this book because I recently started trying to learn MFC and C++ together. I started with BASIC and AREXX in the early 90's and moved into C by 2000. I had always wanted to learn C++ and in particular C++ for Windows. Recently I got Visual Studio 2010 and decided to start with a framework (MFC) so I could ease my way into Windows programming. This book helps with some concepts, but because it is designed as a FAQ it is a little short on explanations to go along with its sample code. I like examples, but I really need to understand fully what is going on before I will use something. That being said, I bought Ivan Horton's Beginning Visual C++ 2010 as a companion which I refer to for clarification on some of the things I don't understand in this book. between the two I can usually figure out what I need to know.As a side note, the reversion of the book I have was written some years ago, so some of the methods are a bit dated. But, overall a decent book and worth a few bucks if you are a novice with MFC.

The MFC Answer Book has a great number of handy tips inside that will benefit the novice to intermediate programmer. These "answers" could be figured out pretty easily, but it is nice to have them all in one reference. All in all it's a good addition to my Windows programming library.

Based upon 49 reviews, this book has a 5-star rating. Amazing!!! I have a dozen or so MFC books, and this one is one of the most useless to me. A book such as this ("The MFC Answer Book") should be a good reference book. But each time I've looked for an answer to a question, it's not in the book (yesturday, I wanted to look up CString details but there's nothing in there on CStings). The print in this book is LARGE, so the actual amount of content in the book is low.END

One of the best programming books I have ever owned. Reduces the research time tremendously and allows the programmer to focus on getting task done.

If you are looking for details about MFC this is NOT the book to buy. If you are looking for some "tricks" well then maybe this will work for you. The book is well enough written but lacks some detail about how the code works. But I am not an expert on MFC. If I could I would add 1/2 star to the 3 I gave.

good book

I have been using 3 books to teach myself MFC: Prosise, Brain, and this one. Once I started to write MFC programs, this book is the one I've been turning to the most. It has very good, succinct answers to the problems you run into when using MFC.
