Looking for a good introduction to Hokusai? There are of course lots of books about this great artist. Some are weighty, oversized tomes that I suspect are more impressive-looking (and impressive) than they are read. Five hundred page volumes complete with scholarly text are not the optimal place to start learning about the genius who conceived “Under the Wave off Kanagawa” - the world’s most famous print.That’s why I prefer Ms. Thompson’s book. It’s the best introduction I’ve read for those who want to learn or know more about Katsushika Hokusai (or one of the other 30 names he chose to call himself over a 70+ year artistic career). There’s lots of information here about Hokusai’s life and art, along with background on the Edo period in which he lived. The writing is fine and strikes the right balance between too simple and abstruse.The book’s 162 pages cannot be any more comprehensive than an introduction to some other subject. Nevertheless the text along with wonderfully photographed illustrations and illuminating closeup cutaways hit all the highlights of Hokusai’s art which you’ll need to get started. In sum, Hokusai is an excellent foundation for further reading and museum exhibition viewing.

This book isn't quite the same as seeing the museum exhibition, but it's the next best thing. Really gorgeous, lavish illustrations including some works I'd never seen before. Highly recommended.

John G. Lake (1870–1935) was born in Ontario, Canada. While he was still a child, his parents moved to the United States. At the age of twenty-one, he became a Methodist minister, but chose to start a newspaper instead of accepting a church ministry. When his wife suffered from a prolonged, life-threatening illness, she was miraculously delivered under the ministry of John Alexander Dowie in April 1898. This experience forever altered the direction of John G. Lake’s life and ministry. In 1907, Lake closed his bank account, gave away all his money and real estate, and began an independent evangelistic work by preaching Christ, healing the sick, and baptizing new believers. Lake is probably best remembered for his missionary efforts in South Africa, but his ministry in the United States was also powerful. One hundred thousand healings were recorded in five years at the Divine Healing Rooms he established in Spokane, Washington.

The down side of the Disney acquisition of Lucasfilm was that books like Timothy Zahn's the Thrawn Trilogy were relegated to a status dubbed "Legends." And while some of the new material has been enjoyable (notably James Luceno' s "Catalyst") mostly the books have been middling-quality afterthought to the new films and cartoons."Thrawn" rectifies that.From a only-barely modified origin story that will be very familiar to those who read the short "Mist Encounter" to bringing Thrawn days before his debut in "Rebels", we see the journey an alien has to take to rise to the pinnacle of military rank in the xenophobic Empire. There are familiar notes including character and ship names readers of Zahn's Legends material, new material including Thrawn's young protege, and for those who require an Imperial villain, we have Arhinda Pryce and her ruthless climb to political power that also explains a great deal about her character on Rebels and how she and Thrawn became allies of a sort. There's also a surprise twist to Thrawn's backstory that should catch even longtime readers off guard. And for the first time ever, we're permitted a glimpse into Thrawn's mind rather than seeing him filtered through a human POV.New-canon only fans may find things like the explanation of the "civilian casualties" on Batonn strange or not in keeping with the so-far almost simple-minded insistence in new canon on black and white morality, but readers familiar with Zahn's work recognize this is a design feature, not a bug. If the book had any real flaws, it was a somewhat underwhelming antagonist in "Nightswan", and some of the battle sequences get VERY long-winded as Eli (the narrator) talks through analyzing them. But overall the book is the high quality and characterization we have come to expect from Zahn. Other than Catalyst this is, thus far the only must read new Star Wars thus far, and the only one which is a must read for its own sake.

Grand Admiral Thrawn, a.k.a. Mith'raw'nurodo, has captivated readers of the Star Wars books ever since he was first introduced to us in Heir to the Empire back in 1991. Despite his ultimate fate in what has become known as the Thrawn Trilogy, fans have begged for more Thrawn ever since, and we celebrate justifiably every time Timothy Zahn graces the pages of another prequel book or short story with presence of this cool, calculating Imperial villain.Why? Why do we love this guy, this "bad guy" that the general Star Wars fan should be rooting AGAINST since we should want the Rebels to win?Because he isn't like ANY other villain in the SW universe. He is not evil for the sake of being evil, like we have gotten used to seeing. He is not in it to simply increase the Empire's power because he is power-hungry, and he's not manipulating or scheming his way up the military ladder to Lord power and influence over others. He has earned every promotion, and sought none of them. He believes in justice, in the rule of right and in this book we see him openly criticize the policies that keep his aide, Eli Vanto, from achieving the rank he deserves. And while he does feel anger and frustration, he does not allow these negative emotions to overrule his judgment or drive him to reckless actions. He does not over-commit his resources or throw large forces at impossible targets just for the sake of being able to say he succeeded where others failed. He is not afraid to concede a battle as lost. He rarely has to do so, since he is a master tactician, and he spends a great deal of time learning about his opponents' strengths and weaknesses in order to minimize his potential losses. Not because he wants credit for succeeding with higher marks than someone else, but because--and this is important--he cannot abide the wasteful loss of life so prevalent under the command of other high ranking officials. He will take a life if he thinks it is needed, particularly as an object lesson that will prevent future deaths, but that is a rare occurrence. He prefers to teach, to inspire his crew, and is open to suggestions. He is not afraid to accept a suggestion just because he didn't think of it himself.Thrawn was basically swept away along with the rest of expanded universe characters after the new Star Wars movies came to life and changed the last 25 years of "history", much to the grief of many a fan. However, with this book, which ties in to the “Star Wars: Rebels" animated series, Thrawn has come back to the SW universe. His origin has been slightly tweaked in order to tie him more fully into the canon, but under Mr. Zahn's deft craftsmanship, he is still the brilliant, thoughtful, resourceful Imperial officer we have come to admire. This time around, we get a glimpse into how he managed in Imperial Academy training, his early service under other officers (most of whom are not superior to him in tactical planning and execution), and how his sense of honor and justice sometimes gets in his way in a fleet which does not necessarily live by the same rules.Even better, with the journal entries at the start of each chapter, we get a glimpse into his thoughts in a direct way for the first time.The character of Ahrinda Pryce, from the animated series, is better understood if you watch that series since she is not a Zahn creation, but he manages to make her sympathetic enough in the beginning that by the end you can and should be revolted by the path she took as opposed to the one Thrawn takes.I highly recommend this one for anyone who knows and lives Thrawn, and ask those who want to know what all the fuss is about.

This was honestly the best novel in the new canon - hands down. Thrawn reads incredibly well, with a true Sherlock Holmes feel to it. Zahn proves why he should always be the go to in the Star Wars Universe.I won't spoil this for you, but if there is a have to read in the new canon this is it! Unlike other recent novels in the SW Universe, the characters are fresh, appealing, and very memorable. You actually find yourself rooting for the Empire every step of the way. Highly encourage old EU fans and those just starting out alike to take time out and enjoy this one! Just finished my second time through it!Of what I've read, Catalyst was a close 2nd place, Tarkin with 4 Stars, and Lost Stars 3.5 stars in my book. Ashsoka was 2.5, and I won't even bother rating the Aftermath trilogy, which was a huge waste of paper and time!

I buy a planner every year and liked the idea of a 5 year planner so I bought this one. The price is right. I think it will do the job. Holidays aren’t marked but that not a big deal. I just plan on buying stickers from the local dollar store and using those.There’s a 2 page spread for each month with big squares to write in. Before each year there’s a page with the whole year calendar and places for notes. There’s also a few pages for notes at the end and a calendar for year 6. I think it will work great for what I need it for.

As someone who runs a small business as well as working full-time, I use a daily planner A LOT. Buying one every year is costly. This is very affordable. I also bought planner/journal stickers for it (Holidays aren't marked, but that's all right. I don't agree with most of them/don't celebrate all of them). I like the size (8.5 X 11), so the boxes are large enough to put plenty of notations. There are no frills with this planner. It's very basic, which is what I wanted, because I wanted to customize it to my liking. The only thing I'm worried about is how it's going to hold up over the five years. The cover is pretty thin, so I think I'll need to get a cover to save it from wear and tear.

I am a huge planner person. My entire life is written in my planner. This five year planner only has months in it too which was a major selling point because I hate planners that include the weeks. I will most certainly purchase this brand planner again.

Quality paper with extra pages for notes. I use this for financial planning and there's plenty of room on each day for all my notations. When compared to a one year planner from the office supply store which can cost $20 or more this is a superb bargain.

Exactly what I wanted. Just needed a planner with the months, no need for all the extra areas to write notes and one day taking up a whole page.

When my boss asked me to get events on our calendar for four years out, I immediately looked for a planner that would allow me to look at the big picture. This five-year planner does exactly that! The pages are beautiful and the cover is durable. It is a very high quality planner and I absolutely love it! Not going to lie, I am sad that I will have to wait 5 years before needing another one.

Great for the price. There are no holidays annotated and the structure is like a coloring book. I hope it lasts all five years, lol.

I've been buying calendars with 1 year spread but they have been for a school year (Sept. to June). I put up with them but wasn't happy. When I found this 5 year organizer, I bought it immediately. I like to have previous years in case I need to look up when something happened. This is a perfect calendar/planner for me. I highly recommend.
