I read The Dead Inside first (before "We Can't be Friends") and it absolutely changed my decision about sending my troubled teen to boarding school. I kept seeing the link for her books pop up when I was researching therapeutic boarding schools and I'm so glad that I looped back and read both of Ms. Etler's books. The Dead Inside is a personal tale of triumph which gave me tremendous hope as I navigate the way forward in my own family. She exposes a former corner of the troubled teen industry where she was wrongly accused/diagnosed as an addict and held hostage at a time when she should have been back in school and picking out prom dresses. Her home life was abysmal so on some level you'd think that maybe getting away from home would be a good thing, but she was clearly stuck in hell no matter which way she turned.It's easy to close this book and say "well, that whole situation was truly awful and abusive, but it was the 80s, things are different now, we're smarter, we know more, we wouldn't let that happen..." except that assumption is simply NOT TRUE! The same kind of abuse still happens at "therapeutic" boarding schools around the country every single day, and it's not just the ones that low income kids get sent to - it's also the ones that cost $70K+ a year. A dive into Reddit made me realize that no matter how tricky and difficult life is at home, shipping our teen off to be reprogrammed isn't an option. Please read this book if you're at the end of your wits and feeling hopeless as a parent or as a teen. It gives much needed perspective into the very murky troubled teen industry. Sadly, so many of the very places we think exist to help and nurture and refocus our kids are the very places that break them down, trounce their spirits, and make them more prone to addiction, depression, abuse, self harm and suicide when they emerge on the other side. Don't believe the pretty pictures you see on websites - dig into Reddit and you'll come to the same sad conclusions.

Miss Etler is totally accurate in her description of Straight Inc.She presents the horrors that occurred there in a vivid and true portrayal of what it was like to be a teenager in one of the most damaging, violent, "soul breaking" rehabs that America has seen.This book will astound anyone that read it... Especially those of us that were there.I did indeed feel as if I was "back on front row" while reading her very scary and very true book.The suffering we endured there carries through for a lifetime.This is a "must read" for anyone that was there.Also a "must read" for any parent considering putting their child in a similar program.They still exist today.

This book is a Godsend! Cindy put into words the horror of the experience. It is accurate to a spooky level. The emotions she describes are the same I and many other Straight Inc survivors experienced then & still experience to this day. This book has changed my life, allowing me to awaken to the horrors I experienced wihile a fellow survivor shares so vulnerably. I laughed inappropriately at things that were not a bit funny, but somehow I experienced relief seeing my horrirs in the written word. This is a very true story. Thank you Cindy Etler!

You won't be sorry you took the spiral dive into Cyndy Etler's predatory home life and involuntary captivity in a teen mind control cult, where only insanity assured survival. Cruel truth, thriller pacing, and immersive description make 'The Dead Inside' a fast, engrossing, emotional must read.Ms. Etler writes with absolute authority on Straight, Inc.'s brainwashing and intimidation tactics that turned so many formative teen minds against themselves. Her angsty youthful narrative voice careens you through the: shock, panic, terror, and psychotic submission necessary to survive the abuse of such environments.Having suffered captivity and deprivation under different circumstances, I found the universal truth of Cyndy's experience undeniable. I would have liked more about life and recovery post Straight, Inc., but hope to find it in some form in her future works. I only make the time to review material that merits 5-stars. I read this book twice and appreciated it both times. I'll be reading more by Cyndy Drew Etler in the future.Soaring with keen eyes and sharp talons, 'The Dead Inside' is a screaming eagle among YA memoirs.

Buckle up, it's going to be one hell of a ride. The gravity of the material in Etler's book grabs you page one and doesn't let up until the very end. The ups and downs, her emotions, are raw and real. As you're reading, you feel yourself transforming into a kid, wearing Levi's. You're there, you're with her. You hear the music climbing. Your heart beats faster when her heart beats faster. It's the most relatable book I've read in a long time, not because I can relate, but because she made me relate. Do yourself a favor, buy the book.

Right now i have a detailed game plan to help me over the next 8 to 12 weeks to improve my poker playing in the one area i need the most work on. Once done with that part i will again use what Sky has told me to detail and plan the next area of improvement in my game. I was very lucky the day I found this book by accident but so glad i did.

I've bought and read several poker books starting with Doyle Brunson and many other experts, I learned a lot, but they didn't teach me how to learn and that was a fundamental gap that held me back. In addition to the text, the book comes with a pile of added extras in the form of downloadable documents including a workbook, study plan and much more.The key to this book is that Sky is pushing the reader to make a commitment. I have passion for the game and don't want to spend years playing the same game over and over, I want to improve and understand how to improve. This is probably at least the 20th poker book i've read. This is the first book i've read that makes me want to go back and re-read all my old books with the new techniques Sky has so generously imparted on us. Brilliant, unique, fat-free and funny at times. Loved the lebowski references and other "inside type jokes". Good to read something from another Fresnan. Great work Mr. Matsuhashi. I'm on board. Reminded me how much I forgot HOW to study. I have numerous poker books but haven't retained much from reading them other than the books themselves. Using this book as I go back through some other books, things are really making sense and easier to remember what it is I was trying to learn to begin with!

This book is mostly a collection of tips on how to study and set goals, things you could read anywhere, with little to no poker content. The most poker-related stuff was on how to use PokerTracker and Flopzilla, but that is still generic information, and I wouldn't be surprised if the author had some affiliate relation with them. Overall it was worthless. I wish I hadn't bought it.

I'm really looking forward to using the material in this book to create a solid lesson plan to attack specific leaks and incorporate new techniques into my game. The book gives you everything you need to get your poker learning organized, stay on track, and hold yourself accountable, but it's up to you to do the actual work. If you are looking to just read the book and (poof) be the best around, guess again. I think this, combined with Sky's videos and podcasts, give readers a good path and outline for success but you will need to dive in and fill in the details specific to your needs.

wanted to take poker to a serious profitable level-knew i needed a strong foundation--well here it is!! sky's book is where you start!! An awesome read knowledgeable in every aspect of the game that he writes about but more importantly how to study the game. I cannot stress this enough, you want to play! you want to profit! If you look thru my other reviews WWII USN and submarine books are a favorite reading subject for me. After having read many and having something to compare to I am sorry to say that I would rate this book as an average read at best. Although it covers a subject that I enjoy its just not very engaging as a written work. Like a number of books written on a ships history it begins with an introduction to the role of submarines, the stresses of surving on one and some of the main officers. Once the crew is assembled and trained the book basically covers the experiences of the sub and its sailors patrol by patrol til the wars end. However a good book cannot rely on just that but needs an author to expertly weave all of these experiences together into a single interesting narrative but in my opinion that is not achieved. The chapters regarding the patrols are a bit tedious and often times there are a couple of pages in a row devoted to just explaining what the submarine did down to the minute during an attack. 1141- took final bearing, 1142 shot first torpedo etc. Alot of passages are hardly more interesting than a skippers patrol report. Chapters devoted to crews experiences in between patrols are mostly mundane. There are a few episodes such as a sailor getting arrested to provide some color but for the most part it just talks about them drinking beer or servicing the boat. If you've read other sub books I dont think you'll read about anything particullary new. The part of the book that shines the most is the pages describing the Puffers long submergence and depth charging on one of her first patrols. Here the authors pulls together several former sailors experiences and how they felt the crew was affected which I thought was interesting. Typically sub histories will characterize the crew of the Puffer as being deeply shaken by that experience but that does not seem to be the case. All in all I would only suggest this book to someone who has to read them all otherwise if you are looken for a similar type of book that is truly a five star I would suggest Ostlunds Find Em, Chase Em, Sink Em. Great subject but the writing is flat and very pricey.

like the others, i was quite reluctant and hesitant to shell-out $45 for a softcover book. however having a lifelong penchant (and weakness) for written accounts on WW2 submarines i bit the proverbial torpedo and have now just finished reading this fine WW2 history of the USS PUFFER. FIVE STARS all the way and a successful war patrol (clean sweep! tie the broom to the periscope shears!)! the chapters are well-segmented from the construction inception, through each successive war patrol, to final de-commissioning and disposition. ironically the bulk of the text are not of the author's...but verbatim WAR PATROL REPORTS...and several inclusions of former PUFFER crewmember veteran's oral histories, anecdotes, and especially rather lengthy FPO letters home written by an PUFFER officer (to his wife during the war). besides the postwar memoirs (by actual veterans) and or history texts (by noted historians), books of this ilk, are usually the product of a baby boomer seeking to learn more of his/her father's past WW2 service. this work is no different, as the author attended several PUFFER reunions, interviewed PUFFER crewmembers, researched the archives, etc etc in his quest to understand his father's role in the Silent Service. having amassed reams of research material...a book was a natural outcome (otherwise his oral history interviews would have never come to light). what aspect i especially appreciated was the overall narrative of a WW2 boat that was not a headline glamor maru-killing ace sub, but rather an unsung workhorse representative of most of the WW2 submarines (it just happened his father served on her). all former PUFFER crewmembers including their WW2 USN serial numbers are listed which for me renders this work an invaluable resource index. the author's obsessive effort to disclaim the longheld notion that PUFFER's crew was completely disbursed after the horrifying first war patrol could have been abbreviated as well as the sections on physiologic & psychologic aspects of life aboard a diesel boat. one minor error: enlisted submarine personnel did not wear the silver TWIN DOLPHINS qualification badge during WW2 (it was instituted in 1956)...instead wore a TWIN DOLPHINS cuff striker on their liberty blues and or summer whites. during WW2 commissoned officers were the only ones authorized the wear the GOLD TWIN DOLPHINS quals badge. all submarine personnel, enlisted and officer, were allowed to wear the COMBAT PATROL PIN insignia (a combat battle star was added for each patrol deemed successful by the higher-ups). also interestingly enough, there is usually scant mention as to the real reason behind the (faulty) magnetic imploder (on the fishes)..as the author stated it was thought more effective to explode underneath the ship as to 'break the keel, ie., backbone'...when in truth it was devised to originally sink enemy man-of-wars which tend to have a thick armor belt which neutralized most contact exploders (that was the theory anyhow). for all WW2 submarine historians, aficionados, readers, etc...this book is a definite affirmative.

The USS Puffer was built in my hometown, Manitowoc, Wisconsin and that's what initially piqued my interest. I hesitated at first because the book seemed a bit pricey for a paperback but I assure you it's a bargain. The writing style draws the reader into the book and onto the submarine. You'll be given not only an excellent view of each engagement fought by PUFFER but also a glimpse into the personalities of the various men who served in her. You'll learn how the submarines were built and how the citizens of Manitowoc felt about the young sailors who came to town and sailed the boats off to war. The book is a great read and well worth your investment. It's a keeper.

I bought this book as well as Rosetta Stone. I use rosetta stone whenever I can sit down but I love listening to this audible while cleaning the house or driving.Paul Noble offers an easy way to learn German and his technique is simple. He offers pauses and breaks throughout so that it gives the listener time to think about the sentence and say it out loud.I highly recommend purchasing this if you are looking for a simple way to learn German. Its interesting how many words are similar between German and English.

I would give this set 5 stars, but the DVD was for a foreign country, so I couldn't play it. The CD's were fine though.Paul Nobel has a good method for learning languages.I'm using the course to catch back up with my fluency in German and this is an excellent course to do it.I think this course is right up there with the Pimsleur method, which rated very highly. So I'm satisfied with this and I will recommend this course. I learned how to be fluent in Spanish with Paul Nobel courses, so I think anyone will be able to use it effectively.

Great, what more can be said. Two sessions a day about 10 min each, repeat and rote. AMAZING the progress you can make. Great beginner.

This will be my third language. I’ve already been through the whole experience of acquiring a new language as an adult, so I know what I need. Trust me when I say this guy knows what he’s doing. He’s got his own approach that oversimplifies things to help you acquire a framework that you can adjust to accomodate more complexity. Other courses tend to throw tons of bizarre constructions at you with very poor if any explanation, which frustrates those of us who cannot retain anything we don’t understand. Let this guy help you.

Very good language course.

Considering I am on level 2 of Rosetta Stone, (which is around 30-40 hours in) you'd think I would have a grasp on the language. And, by and large I suppose I know a lot of words that are separate from each other, but I've never been able to form those words into a coherent sentence. Perhaps it's the leg up that Rosetta Stone gave me, which it absolutely did, but even after 40 or so hours there, I believe I've learned more in 3 hours with Paul Noble's program than vice versa. I listen to it while I run and can now string together sentence, I now understand grammar better than I ever have (something Rosetta Stone doesn't even touch on, it's a guessing game with them) and I can now make sense of the translation of words, with German the word Sie means, She, You, They. And I had no idea when to use which, but, now and I'm sure with common sense after it was explained, I grasp it with ease. While I may not be completely fluent, I can say it was the best $5 I could have spent in any area and especially on a language learning system.One down side, I don't know how to spell the words but you can figure that out once you learn how it all works and sound them out. German does use a few wonky symbols that this program hasn't covered, but I'm only on "1" so, we'll see if they ever mention the strange symbols.The fact that I can run and practice this makes me feel as if this is the summer I finally master languages.

I am "JP in GA"'s wife, and once upon a time, I spoke German. Now, fifty years later, I'm re-learning, and I really like this Paul Noble method. I listen to it in the car and am becoming somewhat verbal in it. Children learn to speak English and don't know a thing about accusative case or prepositions or verb tense...they just learn to speak it. And that's what I like. Yes, I will be pulling out a textbook soon, but this Paul Noble method is fun and it has certainly worked for me!
