I've quite a few excellent WWII histories but this one is one of the most visceral and savage accounts I've ever seen. Your feelings about the universality of the foot soldier will never be the same.

The best way to start this review is to say "wow." Just "wow." This is the most engrossing, intense, and amazing book I've read in a long time. My only regret is that I didn't read it sooner.Sajer obviously fought for the Nazi's on the Eastern Front during WWII. That said, there's nary a peep of ideology in the book, either pro-Nazi or anti-communist. This is really about one man's experiences, not about what caused the war, or even what he believed when he wrote the book.The experiences themselves are stunning - frightening, but stunning. He starts off with some pretty brutal details about basic training as a young man/child - Sajer couldn't pass the test to be in the Luftwaffe, so he ended up in the infantry, first driving a truck, later as a member of the renowned Gross Deutschland division, seeing action in many of the most important battles of the Eastern Front.Sajer himself said he didn't write this book so that it could be cited by historians - the book is about experiences. And like few other authors, Sajer conveys those experiences - hunger, fatigue, hope, fear, sadness, cold. Anyone who believes that war is a glorious experience will be sadly disappointed - Sajer expends no effort to make himself into a hero, and indeed, while Sajer loves some of his comrades-in-arms, the book overall is devoid of positive energy.I haven't read All Quiet on the Western Front in a number of years, but honestly, I can't imagine it surpassing this book.There have been some criticisms of this book by reviewers who maintain it is made up. Notably, some of the critics have recanted after corresponding with Sajer, and frankly, I don't know how anyone who reads this book could imagine that it is not true.This book is an absolute must read. No doubt. Buy it now.

Simply incredible! One can watch all the Hitler documentaries on TV that one wants but nothing will explain the pain and suffering of warfare in intricate detail like Forgotten Soldier. When I say "I couldn't put it down"...I truly mean it. All the pain, all the sorrow and all the bloody gore of suffering by the simple German soldier is on display here in words that only an excellent author can express. I'm a "much more than casual" student of military history and this one really got to me. Very highly recommended!

There is all kinds of misery, horror, and suffering, but this is the horror and suffering of this particular man, who is able to share it in poignant words that leave you with the faintest understanding of what it was like and a vast well of sympathy and hope that a man broken and wrecked by war could have some bit of life left to live. No one can understand who hasn’t been through it but Sajer does a very good job of giving us as much of a taste of the horror of war as we could possibly absorb while sitting in the comfort of our homes and reading about it.You may pick up this book to read it for a first hand account of some “action” or “adventure” but you’ll put it down with a firsthand hope for peace for a man whose humanity was pressed and tested like most people will never know.

I truly felt a part of the soldiers' lives on the horrible Eastern Front, and after all the reading I have done of WWII - or any war, for that matter - this is by far my favorite for its vivid descriptions that brought to life the experience of all the senses. It was like going through the war with them, inch by inch and step by step, moment to moment and season to season, year after endless, grueling year, and feeling their pain and cold and hunger and agony and indescribable fear. I felt so much for the author as well as his fellow soldiers. I wish I could have known them in real life.

This book is a very personal account of a soldiers life. It is mostly chronological and feels very personal like a stream of consciousness spilled onto the page. I found myself shocked and disturbed by the difficulties endured by those on all sides of the conflict on the eastern front, but the author often notes how poor conditions were for the average German soldiers, which is striking. We envision them as brutal conquerors and plunderers, but as the author describes, the average enlisted soldier on the eastern front was treated "little better than a prisoner", and was often exhausted, underweight and malnourished. Often denied food, clothing, medicine, and most of all rest, they had to deal with the burden of the psychological horrors of war without the healing effect of any eventual victory. After the defeat at Kursk they had to endure years of bloody retreats culminating in the certainty of eventual defeat. In the midst of this terrible war the author speaks of a camaraderie that developed among soldiers which he claims was the deepest sense of connection he would ever feel in his life to anyone. As someone who was never a soldier, I am left awestruck as to what feeling he must be like.

This book falls into the category of right book at the right time for me. I didn't want to commit to a novel, which because of time constraints would be read serially over several days, but I wanted something that was cohesive, had some continuity, would entertain me, and make me think. This book checked off all those boxes for me, so - mission accomplished! The book is a collection of amusing short stories told in a dry, humorous tone reminiscent of a Mark Twain narrative. Jenkins has presented us with a nostalgic evolution of how Americans travel over the last 50 years; from the long, multi-state, road trips in the family station wagon to the 5th circle of hell which is current air travel with the compliments of Customs and TSA agents. I say nostalgic, because I'm older, younger readers will find the earlier references to be revelatory. The thing that made the Ugly American ugly, was his lack of concern with how he was viewed abroad. Jenkins' traveler does care, and though the results of his efforts may fall short they have the consequence of giving the author stories to tell. A very good read!

Travel can be hair-raising, require fast thinking, flexibility, an ability to improvise, and an optimistic outlook; Tim has got those things, and thus, his adventures around the world have been rewarding and make for stories that are occasionally hair-raising, but usually end up working out just fine.Disclaimer: I've known Tim for more years than I expect either of us probably wants to admit being alive -- although we largely went our separate ways after college, with only occasional contact, so I didn't know most of these stories, nor am I featured in any of them (not a complaint: whereas Tim has traveled on 5 continents, I've only managed about 6 states, unless you count my brief foray into truck driving, which is not the same thing.) Anyway, as an old friend, I found it quite interesting and often amusing. As someone who shared writing ambitions with Tim (we used to bounce ideas off each other and collaborate on some material), I would say that, for sustained reading, I thought the material might be better served as a more continuous narrative, rather than as a collection of short anecdotes; by the end of the book, I wasn't so sure. The format (50 stories averaging about 4 pages each) makes it perfect for bathroom reading, among other things. In any case, I certainly enjoyed the book. Whether it would appeal to someone who doesn't know Tim or his co-travelers (although he sticks to first names and occasional pseudonyms, I was able to identify most of those in the earlier stories as mutual friends and acquaintances), I'm not sure, which is why I give it 4 stars instead of 5.

Most of the tales are from his experiences crisscrossing the globe as a high-tech sales and marketing professional, and a few reflect trips as a youth and, later, with his family.If your career sends you to customer meetings, trade shows, and sales conferences, you’ll be laughing and nodding your head, recalling your own experiences in a parallel universe. Beyond accomplishing the company’s goal for a trip, a successful journey leaves you with an adventure and unforgettable memory.Tim’s storytelling reflects his affable and unassuming personality, perhaps belying his willingness to stride right into an adventure, as the story of his chance meeting with Sarah Palin illustrates.For several years, I worked with Tim, although I never traveled with him. Reading this collection, I see I missed out; at least I can share these experiences vicariously and look forward to reading more of Tim’s travel tales in subsequent volumes.

What can I say - this is some funny stuff. Having not traveled as extensively myself made no difference. It was easy to imagine myself in similar situations and realizing, I may have gone the same way. Short little storyettes that you can pop like candy or plow through a few at a time. In either case very fun stuff. I only keep books that I would read again. This is definitely a keeper.

Like a pleasant, quaffable country wine enjoyed on a picnic with friends, "Mission Accomplished" goes down easy, and all too quickly, either in small sips or all at once. The collection of travel adventures, extending chronologically from the author's own childhood to roughly his daughter's, contains much humor and wisdom. Easy to read but, I imagine, much harder to write: only someone with the Jenkins work ethic could have pulled this off.One star off for the book itself -- the physical object, that is. Is quality bookbinding a lost art, akin to the porcelain glazes on a Ming vase or John Bonham's drumwork on "When the Levee Breaks"? Sure, I could have downloaded the Kindle version, but how do you get the author to sign that? In any case, looking forward to M:A2. I suspect there are plenty more adventures yet to come.

For some reason this book came up when I searched for books by one of my Favourites authors, Bill Bryson. It was only after I’d downloaded and started reading that I began to feel some disappointment. And when I finally looked a little more carefully, I realized this was NOT Bryson. Consists of mainly short random accounts of mildly interesting events, but I really didn’t enjoy the style of writing - not at all amusing - but there didn’t really seem to be a “twist in the tail”. They mostly ended with a whimper. Maybe a nice diary of some memorable events in the author’s life, but personally I found it all a bit of a drag. I should have picked up on the fact that Bill Bryson would never have been so cheap to buy. My mistake.

These unforgettable memories and true adventure stories about traveling around the globe are absolute treasures. Inspired by the Author the way he dealt with the cultural shock in an entirely new environment in Taiwan was fun and hilarious and amazingly he found a Taiwanese wife. In fact, I burst out laughing with mostof the stories described therein.This book brings you lots of laughter and It’s worth reading indeed and it’s a book to put next to your bed.

I'm so glad I read this book. It's one of those books you start reading without knowing the first thing about and ends up surprising you.I think this is what I'd call a cozy read, I really wanted to get inside the book and snuggle up with the characters. They were so warm, and sweet, and real, and beautiful and strong.This is a book about life, finding your place in the world, and being grateful for every single thing you have, even when it feels like it's not enough, because that's what life is about.I think that after you finish this book, you too will be very glad you read it.

Wonderful book with realistic characters, accurate history that's brought vividly to life, and a fascinating look at a very plausible near future. There are so many interesting elements to this story - climate change, past and future; the lingering affects of war and grief; society's ability to adapt and change; the unexpected ways humans make emotional connections; the lifespan of a tortoise; the hope of a colony on another planet.The space program operating from Wichita, Kansas. Love that so much. Yes, I once lived there.This story was compelling and I loved every bit of it.

This book was such a joy to read. It’s marketed as young adult, but I’m a 35yr old man, and I loved it. The three timelines are all interesting in their own way, and even though there’s not a ton of action, I found it to be a page turner solely based on how you keep wanting to get to know the characters better. I’ve never read a book quite like this one, and I look forward to more from this author.

I chose a four star because I enjoyed the characters and the story but I wanted a little more. I like endings with things tied up, the not knowing what happened to certain characters leaves me a little sad. The over all story pulled me in made the characters come alive in all the generations! I would recommend to readers who like multigenerational stories.

I loved this book. I loved the formatting, the reading of the letters. The way time was weaved through the characters. The puzzle that Adri figured out and the outcomes. The characters felt real and their stories were mesmerizing. And I love Galapagos.I give Midnight at the Electric 5 stars for its great read.I would recommend this book to everyone.

This is a very beautiful story told through letters from 3 different generations, taking place during 3 very different times and places and although it might seem weird at first, it leaves a warm feeling of connection through time and space. This was my first book by this author and the way she interconnected the stories is very smart and thoughtful. I am glad I picked this one up.

Beautiful story of different lives from different times and places melding together in unexpected ways as the plot progresses. The ending leaves you thinking and wondering about the characters, but not frustrated that it isn't all spelled out - probably my favorite finish to a story.

I had no idea what to expect when I chose this book from a Kindle deal, but I was completely satisfied with the story. It spanned across oceans and time with interwoven stories that kept me wanting to read to its conclusion. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
