I bought this book because I recently started trying to learn MFC and C++ together. I started with BASIC and AREXX in the early 90's and moved into C by 2000. I had always wanted to learn C++ and in particular C++ for Windows. Recently I got Visual Studio 2010 and decided to start with a framework (MFC) so I could ease my way into Windows programming. This book helps with some concepts, but because it is designed as a FAQ it is a little short on explanations to go along with its sample code. I like examples, but I really need to understand fully what is going on before I will use something. That being said, I bought Ivan Horton's Beginning Visual C++ 2010 as a companion which I refer to for clarification on some of the things I don't understand in this book. between the two I can usually figure out what I need to know.As a side note, the reversion of the book I have was written some years ago, so some of the methods are a bit dated. But, overall a decent book and worth a few bucks if you are a novice with MFC.

The only book on MFC that was able to take aseemingly inexplicable and nearly inconceivableabstract concept of printing pagination inMFC and explain it a concise and provocative fashion.Thank you so much for your gift to us all struggling withthe issues encountered in programming with MFC.

The MFC Answer Book has a great number of handy tips inside that will benefit the novice to intermediate programmer. These "answers" could be figured out pretty easily, but it is nice to have them all in one reference. All in all it's a good addition to my Windows programming library.

A book such as this ("The MFC Answer Book") should be a good reference book. But each time I've looked for an answer to a question, it's not in the book (yesturday, I wanted to look up CString details but there's nothing in there on CStings). The print in this book is LARGE, so the actual amount of content in the book is low.END

One of the best programming books I have ever owned. Reduces the research time tremendously and allows the programmer to focus on getting task done.

If you are looking for details about MFC this is NOT the book to buy. If you are looking for some "tricks" well then maybe this will work for you. The book is well enough written but lacks some detail about how the code works. But I am not an expert on MFC. If I could I would add 1/2 star to the 3 I gave.

I have been using 3 books to teach myself MFC: Prosise, Brain, and this one. Once I started to write MFC programs, this book is the one I've been turning to the most. It has very good, succinct answers to the problems you run into when using MFC.

This is a readable, clear, contextual look at Michelangelo’s life and work. If you want to learn a lot about the guy quickly, this is your best bet.

This books is sooo beautiful. I mean really. It's amazing. It was supposed to be a text book for my class but I love it and now it is going to be a coffee table piece to share with everyone.

This book was suggested for a course I am taking on Michelangelo. It is excellent in the format as to what the lecture series encompasses. I am pleased that I bought the book because it is an excellent reference in the event that I travel again to Italy and visit the museums and churches that have Michelangelo's works.

If you were to read only one text dealing with the great Michelangelo and his art, this would be the book. It is a succinct biography in which one also finds clear and well chosen discussions of the artistic works of the great Florentine. It would be fair to say that Professor Hibbard is a graceful guide to these works--he shows us the key elements of the sculpture, painting and architecture that made Michelangelo the preeminent figure of the Renaissance. And he presents them to us as the artist's life unfolds, so that we can understand the challenges met and problems solved at various stages in Michelangelo's development.The book is filled with a large number of black and white photographs as well as plans and drawings which, together, help the reader understand each of the works being discussed. Indeed, the reader would be hard pressed to find more than a handful of opposing pages that do not have one or more illustrations. For those who are so inclined and long to see more of each work, they are titled so clearly that a quick search on line can bring plenty more to look at. But the illustrations provided in the book are more than sufficient for the reader's understanding.If you are looking for a shocking expose of Michelangelo the man, with all of his secrets revealed (warts and all!), then you do not want to read this book. Professor Hibbard discusses Michelangelo's personality and personal life in detail, but always in the context of his creations. He writes with a deft and gentlemanly reserve that allows the reader to accept the facts without drawing unreasonable conclusions.The conversations about the well-known works - the Pieta, the David, the Sistine Chapel ceiling and Last Judgment - are all clear and helpful. The on and off again relationships with various Medici and Popes provides a helpful understanding of how and why some of the artist's projects were unfinished, or completed in terms altogether different from their conception.The discussions of the architectural contributions of Michelangelo are very good, and provide the reader with an appreciation of the sculptural qualities of these larger than life sculptures. Indeed, Hibbard's discussion of the Bibliotheca Laurenziana stairway and St Peter's are the best sort of architectural criticism to be found anywhere.At the end of the book, but separate from the extensive bibliography, is a section called "Notes for Further Reading", which, if followed, could benefit the reader who wants to know more.If you find this review hepful, why not read some of my other reviews! There is probably no greater art historian in the second half of the 20th century than Howard Hibbard and this book is one of his best. Professor Hibbard, who has also written books on Caravaggio and a study of Poussin turns his attention to Michelanglo. This is not a rehash of The Agony and Ecstasy, Professor Hibbard's interest is in the work and the artist and not a study of the outward events of this great artist's life. I found Professor Hibbord's criticism insightful and interesting. I recommend this to anyone who is interested in the renaissance.

In _Michelangelo_, Hibbard presents a unbiased account of Michelangelo's life in an enjoyable mix of historical narravitve and critical and contextual analysis. The writing is approachable with a minimum of high-brow art jargon. Hibbard also refrains from diving too deep into speculation about fine points such as sexuality and politics. This book is suited for those desiring an end-to-end introduction to the man and his art, or for those who have forgotten 90% of art survey 101, like me.

This is arguably my favorite in this wonderful series about the life of Paul as seen through the eyes of those who knew him best.As book four begins, as usual with painful but unsurprising news of the martyrdom of one of the characters we've come to love, Priscilla remembers back to what must have been one of the worst times of Paul's life - with Priscilla and Aquilla going to Rome and life-threatening danger; no news from Timothy about whether the Philippian congregation has survived Blastinius' latest assault and, worst of all, the mysterious disappearance of Titus, who as time goes on seems more and more likely to have been killed.Priscilla herself is one of the most engaging voices in the series in this entry which proves that just when everything seems to be going wrong, God sometimes gives us a break in this world. With the inevitable subject matter of the next and last book (not yet released as of this writing), it's a period of happiness the characters must sorely have needed to face what was to come.

I now have read all of the books in this series and have been blessed indeed. Reading these made me feel more a part of the early church. Many thanks to Mr. Edwards for sharing his insight and talent. I actually followed the scriptures and marked them in the books as the characters interacted along this marvelous journey of the church!

The 2014 edition of this book has now been published. We've been to Seville and southern Spain three times and will be going back in May 2015. I debated about buying this book, as I feel I have a good command of the region. But I'm glad I did. I took the first one I bought (three years ago) with us on the trip, and left it in the apartment for other travelers.When we first started international travel, I would buy as many books as I could, to help me learn about the area. Increasingly, I use the Eyewitness Travel series almost exclusively, getting the rest of the information I need online. The series is well-organized, without being too overwhelming or confusing.At 288 pages, there is a lot of information packed into this book. But it probably only weighs a pound or so and can therefore be taken with you, which I would encourage.While much of the information contained in this book can be found in other sources, this is the only one I have found which devotes attention to the Triana district of Seville (which I encourage you to visit; you can walk there from most major sites in Seville). The book also gives good information on some of the smaller tines such as Cadiz, Malaga, and Ronda.This book doesn't just include a list of the major museums in Andalusia, but also has photos of some the art, floor plans, and detailed information about visiting. The authors also sprinkle in a lot of Spanish history, which I think is important to know if you are going to visit.Anyhow, they've done a great job with this update. I'm impressed and will definitely use this book on our trip.Now, go see Spain.

In general I love the DK guides as, in addition to their ease of use, they provide a great pictorial souvenir of your visit. I guess perhaps it is because I am getting older, but I really struggled with this version. Firstly, I did not need the part on Andalucia, which is more than half the book. I could not find a Top 10 Guide for Seville - at least not on Amazon. Secondly, I had real problems with the text cross references to the maps. It was not clear which map was being referenced and the type size in both the references and on the maps was so small it was extremely difficult to read. In contrast the maps provided free by the Seville tourist information center was very easy to read and use. Also a major tourisy destination in Seville is the Plaza de Espana -which features on the cover of the guide. Yet there is almost nothing about it inside the guide. That was a real disappointment as I wanted to know more about this spectacular place. I suppose the value of these guides depends on the author - but this one was not up to the usual standard,

I bought this book in conjunction with Rick Steves' Snapshot Sevilla, Granada and Andalucia. They work beautifully together. I always like the DK series as they give an in-depth look at whatever area they are covering, and Rick Steves' books zero in on specifics that are helpful.

I bought several travel books for several countries. This was the best by far. It was easy to use and understand. I like how it broke the city into different sections then discussed what can be found in that section. It provided an easy to read walking path for each area as well as the city. In the back, there is a detachable laminated map. There is more, but bottom line is that we found this book very useful.

Beautiful book, well illustrated, came in excellent condition from the seller despite being labelled as second hand/used. Would use this seller again! Eyewitness guides are always filled with beautiful pics - I usually get one of the Eyewitness books and one Rick Steves and use them in conjunction on European trips.

Ok, well this is a great little guidebook. Has TONS of information for Seville and Andalusia. We were in Seville for about 8 days and spent a day in Cadiz. The book was very handy. We did find it a little bit heavy for it's size, probably because of the glossy paper, but was worth it for all the beautiful and detailed maps, floor plans and photos.

Just returned from Seville and found this guide to be excellent. Particularly helpful in Seville as its streets are very close together. Would take this back with me on our next trip. We only had time for three full days in Seville, and would use this to plan our next trip to Southern Spain.

I loved this book. The descriptions of the food, the wine, and the beautiful location made me wish that I'd win a vaca there. I enjoyed the characters and enjoyed all of their wonderful relationships.

Reeling from a divorce and the loss of the home that she loved, Maisie is trying to get her life back on track when she finds out that she's won a week's vacation at a farmhouse villa in Tuscany, Italy. She invites her two best friends--Emma and Cheryl--to join her on the vacation.Author Sue Roberts describes the vacation with descriptions that make you feel like you are also there. (As someone who loves to travel, but can't do so right now, I love books like this!) They explore local restaurants and regional cooking, a vineyard, the small towns around the farm where they are staying, and bigger cities like Pisa, Siena and Florence. They also experience the fun flirtiness of several single young Italian men in the area.Maisie catches the eye of Gianni, the 40-year-old son who takes care of the farm where she's staying. Throughout the book, Roberts slowly develops their relationship from curiosity about each other to a deepening affinity and then love. But Maisie wonders if it could really have a relationship with Gianni, since she lives in Englandand he is quite happy and prosperous as a farmer in Tuscany. (A pig farmer!) When Harry unexpectedly shows up in Italy and says he wants to get back together, Maisie is thrown for a loop and confused about whether she really belongs in Italy, or whether she should go back to her life in Liverpool, Eventually, she grows to realize who she is and what she really wants out of life.This is a nicely paced book that takes you along not only on Maisie's Italian vacation, but on her journey of discovery. It's a nice read for a weekend when you just want to relax and enjoy a good story!

Reading My Summer of Love and Limoncello is a lot like listening to your most garrulous girlfriend describe her trip to Tuscany. She tells you about every single meal she and her friends ate, what they saw at the different museums all the while mixing it with random thoughts of her cheating ex-husband that you wished she'd gotten over by now because, hello, he cheated. When she says that when they wanted a nibble, they picked olives from the trees and you raise an eyebrow waiting for the punchline that never comes.The good stuff, the romance, is kind of swept aside until later, much later, when she says her love interest called her "bello" and "bellissimo" and you want to ask if he's really Italian...or if he thought she might be a man, because, you know, that would be kind of funny.So I was a little disappointed with My Summer of Love and Limoncello. I think my funny bone is intact, but I didn't laugh. I quirked a smile a time or two. This is definitely for readers who want to escape and armchair travel to Tuscany. Don't expect too much of the characters or the plot. Don't think too much. Just imagine eating some of the luscious dishes and then having a shot of limoncello. Along with her two best friends, Cheryl and Emma, all three are on their way to a rustic farm, Villa Marisa in Tuscany. This is just what Maisie needs, recently split with her husband and being diagnosed with depression by her doctor, you couldn't get a more fantastic prescription for what ails you.Reading this book was a treat in more ways than one. For one, it seemed as if it were a travel log for Tuscany,. The depiction of the landscapes had me wishing I was there again. Two, you could almost catch the aroma of the food described in this book. I only wish there could have been a few recipes in the back. The romantic feature of the book was done perfectly. The characters were wonderful, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a warm and lovely read, a perfect novel to relax with.What is funny, I've made chicken cacciatore for dinner tonight and will finish off the meal with a bit of Limoncello! I thoroughly enjoyed this book!These are the adventures of Maisie, Cheryl and Emma, who get to spend a lovely holiday in Tuscany, courtesy of Maisie, who is in dire need of a change of scenery. These three girls are very different but they complement each other really well. If you don't get a sudden craving for Italian food after reading this book, you are a stronger person than me! I also wanted to try limoncello :)The descriptions of the countryside and the food are eloquent and the story of Maisie and her friends is very relatable. I thought this book might be a bit of a standard chick lit but it isn't really. It is down-to-earth and modern and even though there are some romantic scenes, that isn't the focus of the book. It is more about figuring out what you want in life and going for it, helped along the way by friends and family.A really relaxing, enjoyable read.4.5 stars from me.Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture.

I suppose when I saw romance, given that I was seeking something warm and fuzzy to read, I should have pushed past this one... But I thought maybe.... I was wrong.It's probably good in the romance genre, but I wasn't overly impressed. I actually would recommend this book, if you're looking for a predictable romantic venture. I wasn't. So slightly disappointed.

Highly entrepreneurial and business savvy, Hakkas often became very successful merchants in foreign lands and such was the case for Samuel Lowe. The search for Samuel Lowe begins in Jamaica and from there moves to Shenzhen and Guangzhou in China, roughly the ancestral home of the Hakka's and the Lowe's.There are many poignant moments in the book, starting with the author's upbringing in Harlem. Her mother could be the stuff of a novel. Her Jamaican antecedents the raw material for a doctoral dissertation in sociology. What really brings the story home is the author's almost aside that for most African Americans family genealogy that is truly traceable may date back three or four generations. By contrast, in China family lineage may go back hundreds of generations. By the author's calculation her Chinese family can count 159 generations or roughly a thousand years before the birth of Christ. It's mind boggling.Finding Samuel Lowe is an easy read, being well organized and having a goodly mix of family story telling, history, sociology, mystery and intrigue. It takes a special person to pursue a family past shrouded deeply in vagueness. The author, though, is not just another ordinary person pursuing her roots. She brought to the search some real advantages including a mother that was relentless in the welfare and future success of her three children, a highly successful career in journalism and television, a husband that faithfully supported the near single-minded investigative work to locate the Chinese side of the family, and the Chinese family itself whose members embraced the author and her Jamaican and New York family from the get go. Think about that for a moment. A knock on the door (actually an email out of the blue) and then someone claiming to be your long lost relation that you didn't know you had in the first place. It is all these elements that keep you glued to the book's pages.My only critical observation is that once Samuel Lowe (long deceased before his descendants were located by the author) and family are found and a rightful narrative about the Chinese family in the years from the 1930s (including some tough observations by the author of Mao's Cultural Revolution in the 1960s) is provided, the story starts to run out of steam as the author focuses on family reunions that just don't add to the story. Memoirs oftentimes evolve to the overly sentimental and while it's not excessive here it probably best could have been edited out.

Really good and detailed. I didnt understand why she focussed so much on her chinese side. I guess as a Jamaican i was a bit biased and felt like she was ignoring her Jamaican side, then i remembered that both of her parents were Jamaican. I sometimes forget that most Jamaicans have ancestors from somewhere other than africa. We tend to ignore the other ancestors we have as if they aren't a part of our blood but the reality is that they are part of us. This book was lovely to read because it explored ancestors that i as a Jamaican usually ignore.
