I read the first edition a few years ago and gave copies to everyone on my team. It was very actionable. This 2015 edition is not that.This new edition goes into more theory, but that makes it much harder to use as a concise guide of how to get things done.I loved the first edition, but the 2015 edition was tedious to read and I didn't have the patience to get through it. Too bad he ruined a good thing. It would have been better if he'd added a companion book with all the non-actionable theory, or separate chapters.

The whole book summarise to , choose a day a week to write and review you plans and ideas. Organize them to immediate, delayed, and maybe actions. Done. Read 50 pages and then you will receive the same poorly written redundant information.

This revolutionized my life. I have been well organized... but I didn't know how to organize the FLOW of paperwork in my life. How to keep my in-box empty. !! My desk was always a pile of paper that I didn't know where to put things... and I would actually lose things on my desk. Whew! NO MORE! I got the physical copy of this book as well as the CD version and listen to it going to sleep and waking up in the morning... when I'm driving, or exercising or doing something where I can just let the information flow through my brain again. The clarity and specific depth of insight and clear instructions have helped me to completely reorganize my office so that projects get completed and nothing backs up. I know EXACTLY what to do when I sit down... and then just go do it. I keep my in-box empty... (mostly... still working on it. At last my whole desk is no longer my in-box. LOL.) I'm blown away by this. I no longer feel the conflict of trying to focus on a project and at the same time thinking I should be doing something else. Everything is written down on my List. It's out of my field of concentration until I want to check my List and see all the random other little things I want to accomplish. Clear focus. Zen mind. Peaceful mind. Balance. Wow. I'm deeply grateful.

Overall I found the book a very good read. It helped me crystallize a number of ideas about how to organize tasks using simple lists and structures. The over arching theme I took away is that it is important to have a good organized structured to put ideas immediately into and to trust the structure so that one can free one's mind from constant distractions.What should be put down in this structure are immediate things that are actionable, what one can do next -- as opposed to generalities, which require more thought. A key aspect of course is breaking down a larger task into these smaller actions.Allen describes a structure of immediate lists to look at, calendars, todo lists, reference lists and so forth. Other bins include an incubator list for long term tasks and a “waiting for” list, which has tasks that are pending from other people to be completed. This seems like a sensible arrangement but I suspect that other people will have somewhat different structures. My impression is that the important idea is not letting immediate short term distractions cloud one's focus on a task, and tackling things sequentially in little chunks.Allen talks a lot about avoiding infinite loops. He mentions that a long term plan is not something that goes on someone's tickler list but rather something that is broken up into many actions as opposed to only a few. Practically he discusses how in meetings, before the end of the meeting one really should bring up the question of what is the immediate next action that is a follow up from the meeting rather than just talking in generalities.In the book Allen talks about the importance of having few distractions to really concentrate on the task at hand and one way of achieving fewer distractions is by designing a system to capture all of one's daily input into a well-designed inbox format. He talks about how if this is well done one does not have the guilt of constantly thinking about things that have to be done nor does one have to have the mental load of things constantly popping into one's mind -- given ones assurance that everything is captured in this universal inbox. He contrasts a company that has a way of capturing day-to-day tasks as smoothly running without people being interrupted with one that is constantly crisis and event driven.I read this book before the new 2015 edition came out. This new edition of course needs to be much updated for the new digital reality. The 2001 edition seems quaint, with its discussion of the correct file folders to use and how to organize things correctly in a close by file cabinet. It makes reference to a Palm Pilot but this seems almost prehistoric in today's age.That said, I really felt that the lessons in the original 2001 edition were quite timeless. One could easily see how they morphed into using email programs such as Gmail and perhaps even influenced the design of these systems. In fact, it is fascinating trying to connect a lot of the concepts in this book with the modern world of cloud computing, gmail and various online task sites. Many of these online productivity tools mimic very closely a lot of the ideas in Allen's work, particularly gmail's immediate function for archiving things from your inbox and putting various tags and stars on them. It fits very well into a system of de-cluttering your inbox quickly but then coming back to selected bits.Overall I would highly recommend this book, I think it is a good read.

There is a lot people seem to miss with this system. Maybe the name is just to easy to replicate. There are maybe 2 Apps I've seen that work well with what David Allen describes in his book. One is ThinkingRock the other I forgot because I didn't like it. I don't know how many people really appreciate the natural way ideas come together that Allen highlights (Purpose, Outcome, Brainstorm, Organize, Identify Next Action). Allen shows how people either go against the grain or when they bring someone along on the through their thought process, the brought along person doesn't get the essential information (Purposes and Outcomes) and has to work backwards before they can work forwards. He shows why many meetings are a waste of time. Etc. Etc. Etc.If you're tired of making to do lists and never finishing them, this book will tell you pretty much every mistake you've made and are going to make if you keep your pattern. Learning to use Allen's system is worth it but very difficult. If you wish you were more efficient, this book will give you a system that you can base yours from. If you wish... stop wishing and get this book.

Given his academic credentials, I suppose that I can say that he knows what he's talking about. He does cite much of what he writes. However, he didn't seem to dot his i's and cross his t's before publishing the book. I'm just finishing the first chapter and have already noted several errors, including:1) Calling the United States a Commonwealth nation2) His written descriptions of trends do not always match the corresponding tables.3) In one table, he listed the same country twice, but with two different data values for the same year.I probably would have purchased a different book if I were doing this over again.

This book was something that I had been seeking for quite some time. In all the discussions of urban transportation and why our cities and suburbs have the structures they do, I had never found an analysis that, for me, provided a convincing and comprehensive explanation for why things are as they are now. This book did that. It goes back to the rise (and subsequent decline) of mass transit in the form of streetcars, subways, and then buses in major metropolitan areas, the reasons why the US became the first motorized nation in the world and continues to be the most motorized nation, the unexpected impacts of both radial and circumferential parkways and freeways on the distribution of homes and jobs, and a myriad of related subjects.It also tries to address where we go from here. The choices are not easy. Mass transit after 40+ years of public intervention is of only limited help. We have created a built environment that has serious environmental and sustainability problems with not many choices to escape from the cul de sac we find ourselves approaching.All in all, a book I've been wanting to find and a very satisfying, if disturbing, study. I will note that there were a few text and table errors that better proofreading might have eliminated, but they didn't really distract from the thrust of the arguments presented.

I was really let down by this kindle book. It was short, but I expected that. I went through this about 4 times to see if I got anything different but my reaction was the same each time. This is really just a single picture of the seven wonders of the world with a brief description and nothing more. It also has some other attractions many people have and still visit, but again, just a single picture and a short description of the place. I was hoping for a little more "romance" and history describing the places that we must see. So there are 24 places altogether, Zimbabwe; Moscow, Russia; New Zealan; Bali; Indonesia; Iceland Waterfalls; Berlin,Germany; Dubai; Paris; Cambodia; Pisa, Italy;Turkey;Wiltshire, England; Venice, Italy; Tinum, Mexico; Vatican City; London; El Giza, Egypt; Brazil; China; Peru; Brazil (again); Arizona, U.S.A.; and India. Some of the pictures look really old. It would have been nice to have been given a little reading material with some highlights of the place and surrounding area and why we must see them. This seemed more like a dictionary than a travel log of great places to see. Wish I could give this a better rating, but I received this free in exchange for my honest review and I can't give it more than 3 stars.

My family loves to travel. We hit the road about twice a year and we are planning our spring vacation trip. When I saw the eBook Must See Places Of The World, I figured it would be a great resource to assist us in our planning.This was my first Kindle eBook and I was disappointed I could not read this on my Apple MacBook Pro but I was informed that this item is not compatible with my device. So I downloaded Kindle for Android for my Samsung Galaxy Note 5.Once the app downloaded and installed, I was ready to roll... As others have mentioned, the pictures are GORGEOUS! I do wish there were more photos for each must see place. In addition, the places recommended are great. While most were not surprises or revelations, they definitely gave us some great ideas and brought some locals to the top of mind. I will admit we never considered going to Iceland or Turkey, but we will definitely consider them for our next trip. It's funny that Arizona is something we were talking about going to in March and China is near the top of the list for our international trip.As for cons, I must definitely say that the text is not easy to read. While I understand this is a scan of the actual book, I wish they could have done something to make it more phone viewing friendly. I included a screenshot of the text to show what I mean. Fortunately, the most important info--the name of the place is easy to read. As you get down the paragraph, the red and black make it a bit tough on the eyes.DISCLAIMER - While I received this eBook in exchange of a review, the statements listed above are completely my own without any bias. Must See Places of the World is a wonderful book for both adults and children. As Mark Twain put it, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." This book is great for anyone who loves to travel, learn about different cultures or wants to introduce to their children how other cultures in the world live. This is not an in-depth description, however a quick excerpt per photograph which is great for anyone who wants just quick facts and is on the go. I read this eBook on a plane for leisure. As a photographer, I did appreciate all the artistic captures. A quick fun read, an intriguing concept, and fun to page through. I probably wouldn’t base a bucket list off of this book, however, it is good to learn about different places in the world. I like it enough to recommend it to my sister to download for my nieces. I received this book at a discount in exchange for my honest and unbiased review, which I provided.

I found this book and thought it would be nice to see different places around the world that are AMAZING. I was looking for unique places that I have not seen or heard about. Unfortunately, that was not what I found. This book took me about 10 minutes to flip through (if that) and all of the places mentioned were well known (i.e. Grand Canyon, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Eiffel Tower, etc.). The descriptions that were with each picture were very short and vague. There was not much information about history or anything for these places. I found the font to be difficult as well. It just seemed to be the wrong type of font or color with the background and I found it hard on the eyes (but that could just be me). The only reason I gave this book three stars instead of two, is because I went back and read the description and it is aimed more for children instead of adults. However, I still think if you were trying to peak a child's interest in traveling when they get older, the author should have showed places that are not commonly known and taught in school. I have seen numerous places, such as hidden waterfalls or watering holes and trails that are absolutely beautiful that spiked my interest in visiting the location. I was really hoping for places like that in this book. I received this book at a discount in exchange for my honest review.

I loved this book. The reflections of these two geologists pre-sage our 21st century understanding of evolutionary developmental biology. I grew up in a hunting family and have studied natural history all my life. The Namib is the one most formidable places on Earth. I laughed many times at how God protects fools and little children as these two men struggled with survival in the wilderness.Reading this book is also sobering when one considers the level of habitat degradation due to human activities that has happened since their account. My complaint is with the publishers. Anytime the text started a word with "cl" it was changed to "d." Some passages were rendered completely nonsensical and/or unreadable. That is a great shame. I guess I will look for a paper copy in a rare book store.

"The magic of the desert is hard to define. Why does the sight of a landscape of empty sand, rocks, slab and rubble stir the spirits more than a view of lush green fields and woods? Why does the lifeless play of light, colour, and distance have such an invigorating, fascinating and elating effect ? Perhaps because no limitations are imposed by other forms of life; perhaps because the mind of the beholder is presented with a fata morgana of unlimited freedom. And on such far horizons the outline of a mountain draws the eye like an island in the endless ocean." Henno MartinThis book is magical. Whether it was in the simple straight forward story telling or in my immediate captivation by a most unlikely undertaking into a forbidding landscape I don't know, but I was hooked right off. This is an inspired account of two friends and a dog escaping from a war they did not want to participate in, and to avoid imprisonment by the German army, they drove their lorry into the most inhospitable terrain imaginable, the Namib desert, where they lived for two and one half years. Imagine as your eyes confront a bleak wasteland of gullies, fissures, gorges and barren expanses of flat, chalky soils of salt, sand and rock that stretches limitlessly toward dark distant mountain ranges. What kind of adventures could anyone expect in such a forlorn place. A good place to hide though if you possess at least some rudimentary survival skills."We stared down in fascination. It was an impressive and intimidating sight, a landscape inconceivable under a more temperate sky and in milder latitudes. Barren cliffs fell away steeply into deep ravines all around the main canyon like a wild and gigantic maze. They had a name, the "Gramadullas", and as someone had aptly said, they looked as though the Devil had created them in an idle hour."So these men and their dog lived like the bushmen; hunting, searching for water, cooking, storing, preserving , often starving but....surviving. They were both geologists with a knowledge of the land, a surplus of down home imagination, ingenuity and an indomitable spirit. I often wished I were there with them even"when the sun rose we were half buried. Our hair, eyes and ears were full of sand and at breakfast the springbok meat crunched between our teeth. The wind had become noticeably warmer and on the chalk plateau it was so strong that we could lean against it. A red veil of sand rose from a small dune into the blue sky. To the south a sand storm was raging and the dunes were covered with a reddish mist."I read about their experiences at waterholes where animals I had only seen in picture books or at a zoo were gathered to slake their thirst, sometimes communally, with natural predators next to them. Gemsbok, springbok, klipspringer, herds of zebra, ostriches, leopards, jackals and hyenas are sympathetically and adventurously described under exotic skies and shadowy rock formations. The author and his friend fabricate houses out of meager resources: mud, rocks and tamarisk. They live in caves and fashion there own tools. Together they speculate about the geological transformations in the topography. They philosophize about the evolution of Man and reasons behind war. There are stories describing their strenuous adventures following, sometimes for days, the spoors of the indigent animals in their search for water.Mr. Martins narrative is poetic. His words tapped into my unconscious as their adventures unfolded and the telling so descriptive and amicable I often wanted to be there."Our hair began to stand on end and with long bounding strides we ran from the plateau. We were hardly under the rock face when a blinding, hissing, stone-splitting fork of light dazzled us for seconds and the first great drops fell on our heads. We laughed and danced with delight--the first rain for nine months."Even if the day by day existence were totally monotonous and exhausting and there were virtually no tomorrow but just a repetition of the day gone by, I would at least be far from the chaos of war and its machine. And I would know it as sure as the silence enfolded me and the desert sheltered me as I fell asleep under a million stars."In our stone shelter we had left three narrow slits each about sixteen inches long. When we were sitting in wait early on the first morning a male ostrich came down the opposite side of the valley with a couple of hens. The cock-bird was still about four hundred yards or so away when suddenly it stopped and stared towards us. Was it possible that he had seen something at that distance?"...................."During this inspection we sat as still as mice, but the ostrich remained suspicious and refused to come any nearer." ..................."About an hour later five more ostriches came down the valley along the same track. Seeing so many springbok and gemsbok at the water they probably assumed that the coast was clear and that there was no need for special caution.But then suddenly the first cock-bird stepped into their path with out-stretched wings, obviously barring their way like a policeman halting the crowds. The gesture was unmistakeable. The newcomers stopped and they too looked over towards our hiding place, whilst the first cock-bird joined his two hens sitting in the sand.Herman and I looked at each other, speechless. Not only had these strange birds incredibly sharp eyes but they also obviously had something like a sense of responsibility even towards strange birds belonging to other flocks. The book's text content by the great geologist Henno Martin is a spectacular piece of desert writing, but this particular edition (with the clock on the cover) is VERY disappointing--the photographic plates are highly pixelated scans of the original sketches and basically worthless. It would be comical if one had only paid a few dollars, but at the over-$20 list price here, it's farcical. If you're thinking of buying this book in advance of a trip to Namibia, it's much better to wait until you arrive in southern Africa, where you can find good editions on sale in all major bookstores.

A great book and humbling to read about what must have been such an incredible experience. I found it well written. My poor stars are actually for the publishers. Errors in spelling, missing words, words without meaning that seem made up, paragraphs just...missing, bad translation. Terrible. I would think most could be caused by poor OCR, but to not proof read after that process is crazy. I was amazed that any publishing house would put their name to this. Its really bad. I'm not going to ask Amazon for my money back. But I hope someone is able to do something about it

Enjoyed reading about their experiences and learning about the fauna and flora. Not a gripping read but interesting enough to finish. Kindle edition had lots of errors to read around. For example, what does this mean? "We cocked a snook at them, but they didn’t understand that, and Otto barked furiously." (Loc 3521)

This is an excellent, important, and valuable book. I am thankful to have been able to find a reprint, however, the quality of this reprint is very disappointing. The resolution of the photographic reproduction process is low, resulting in fuzzy, ragged-edged print and photographs that are absolutely undecipherable. A reprint of this quality would be reasonable at a lower price. Since the photos were taken by the author, they are an important, and missing, part of the experience. Rather than being put in a detention camp, two German geologists in Namibia during WWII, spent two and a half years surviving in the desert wilderness. They drove in an all terrain vehicle to a remote area, bringing with them flour, oatmeal, beans, jam, and dried fruit. They had a shot gun and a pistol to kill wild game, the preferred meat being gemsbok, now called oryx. It tells of learning survival skills, moving camp three times, worrying about being found by authorities. The author also writes of the thrill of living in nature, the beauty of sunsets and stars, He and his partner also discuss evolution and question the survival of the fittest theory, believing that cooperation with others might be a more important factor in survival. I enjoyed this book very much. PH

This book is in the public domain so and no longer available in bookstores. I read it years ago and enjoyed it so much that I looked for it in English. Apparently it's available in the original German. Pictures didn't copy at all...distorted. I enjoyed it as much the second time as the first reading!
