About the Author

Erich Neumann (1905-60), a psychologist and philosopher, was born in Berlin and lived in Tel Aviv from 1934 until his death. His books include The Origins and History of Consciousness, The Fear of the Feminine, and Amor and Psyche (all Princeton). I give this book five stars because it's a great work by Erich Neumann, possibly the most insightful and important contributor to analytical psychology after Jung. Get this book to really delve into understanding this Archetype. There is only one thing I want to let potential buyers know about this particular edition: the print is very small. So small it leaves a wide margin. If your eyes are prone to getting tired, you might consider another edition with bigger letters. It's a pity Princeton University Press overlooked this detail. I'll attach a photo to give you an idea how small the print is and consider this, might not be an issue for everybody.

Haven't finished but it has much depth with timeless content.

I wish he had lived long enough to write the companion he had planned. Excellent scholarship.

I'm impressed by the in depth scholarship of this book.

Seems to be well researched, but the format is garbage. Its centered in the middle of the page with a border of blank space that if taken out would shrink the size of the book about 25%. Perhaps its for making notes? To me it was annoying, but the information was interesting.To me the poor formatting makes reading it not a enjoyable read.

Erich Neumann (1905-1960), was a Jungian psychologist, philosopher, and author; he also wrote books such as The Origins and History of Consciousness,The Fear of the Feminine,Depth Psychology and a New Ethic,Amor and Psyche, etc. [NOTE: page numbers below refer to the 379-page plus 185 B&W plates paperback edition.]He wrote in the Preface to this 1955 book, “In this book we have attempted a structural analysis of an archetype; we have striven to show its inner growth and dynamic, and its manifestation in the myths and symbols of mankind. Such an understanding is one of the central needs of analytical psychology. For, in both a theoretical and a practical sense, it is very hard for those who have not experienced the reality of the archetype by undergoing analysis to understand what depth psychology means by an archetype… Our exposition does not deal with the archetype in general, but with a specific archetype, namely, that of the Feminine or… the Great Mother… The investigation of the special character of the feminine psyche is one of the most necessary and important tasks of depth psychology in its preoccupation with the creative health and development of the individual… The experience of the archetypal world leads to an inner form of humanization that… will perhaps one day prove more reliable than the form of humanism known to us up to now, which is not grounded in depth psychology.”He notes that the Great Mother “was worshipped and portrayed many thousands of years before the appearance of the term.” (Pg. 11) He points out that “the elementary character of the Archetypal Feminine is far from containing only positive features… the Archetypal Feminine is not only a giver and protector of life but… she is the goddess of life and death at once.” (Pg. 45)He clarifies, “The archetypal image of the Great Mother lives in the individual as in the group, in the man as well as the woman. When therefore we say that the matriarchal world precedes the patriarchal world, we are not referring to a sequence of sociological structures, such as that set up by Bachofen ].” (Pg. 91)He states, “The Great Mother fills the universe and the earth with fertility and abundance, and tends to be characterized by a naturalistic, ‘sensuous’ form, while her aspect as ruler over the spirits and the dead favors forms stressing the unnatural, unreal, and ‘spiritual.’” (Pg. 108) Later, he adds, “Body-vessel and mother-child situation---the positive elementary character of the Feminine---spring from the most intimate personal experience, from an experience that is eternally human; and even when it is projected into the ends of heaven and earth, it preserves its closeness to the central personal phenomenon of feminine life.” (Pg. 147) But has also adds, “Blood sacrifice and dismemberment belong to the fertility ritual of the Great Mother. Both fecundate the womb of the earth…” (Pg. 189)He observes, “It was [Robert] Briffault ,The Mothers] who discovered the fact (which is still insufficiently recognized) that early culture is in very high degree the product of the female group, and that the relative sedentariness of the matriarchal community of mothers and children was bound to provide a biological, psychological, and sociological force for the ‘ennoblement’ of the original natural state.” (Pg. 281)He asserts, “The goddess is therefore not only the queen of the ennobled fruit of the soil but also of the spirit matter of transformation that is embodied in the wine. Thus the transformative character of the Feminine rises from the natural to the spiritual plane. The culture-bringing primordial mysteries culminate in a spiritual reality that completes the mystery character of the Feminine.” (Pg. 287)He concludes, “The Archetypal Feminine in man unfolds like mankind itself. At the beginning stands the primeval goddess, knowing nothing but the secret of her womb; at the end is Tara, in her left hand the opening lotus blossom of psychic flowering, her right hand held out toward the world in a gesture of giving.” (Pg. 334) He continues, “The Great Goddess… the archetypal unity and multiplicity of the feminine nature---is the incarnation of the Feminine Self that unfolds in the history of mankind as in the history of every individual woman; its reality determines the individual as well as collective life. This archetypal psychical world which is encompassed in the multiple forms of the Great Goddess is the underlying power that even today… determine the psychic history of modern man and of modern woman.” (Pg. 336)This book will be of interest to a variety of readers: Jungians; feminists; matriarchal theory supporters; those interested in archetypal and depth psychology, and even archaeologists.
