The author is a genius in putting together such an impressive collection of pilots, their exploits, and their stories about air combat in North Viet Nam. This book should be on every pilot's book shelf or pilot "want a be." The details are enormous and every chapter has a personal account that is important in maintaining the reader's interest and in immortalizing every pilot mentioned. I truly am a fan of this book and it is truly one of a kind. My only complaint, not enough photos, and I am sure in many cases very painful because so many airmen did not come home to their beloved families. The author tells it like it is when it comes to bad leadership and he minces no words in writing about these people and how bad leadership compromised lives and missions. I highly recommend.

This book is one of the finest accounts of true stories as told by those fighter pilots who experienced the deadly air war over North Vietnam on a daily basis. These accounts bring about a full spectrum of emotions from the shear terror these men experienced to the typical fighter pilot humor as well as the insanity of some of the strategies for conducting the air war from Washington's elite politicians. This is a book filled with poignant individual accounts of bravery, loss and exhilaration but above all, it conveys a sense of devotion to duty and one's fellow warriors. I will read these stories over and over and will always admire and appreciate the sacrifices these young men made for each other and for our country. Surely they can claim title to their own "Greatest of their Generation."

This is a collection of stories about the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam Nam. F-100’s, F-105’s, F-4’s and F-111 mostly. It’s composed of dozens of personal recollections. Most are engaging, some are gripping combat accounts and still others are what happens with 20-somethings in an O-Club bar or BOQ.The reason I’m giving it 3 stars is the inconsistency, which can hardly be a surprise. A few writers are extremely articulate. A bunch are funny as hell. Too many might have been excellent sticks but not so skilled as writers. The latter is not to detract from what they did. It’s just that I needed to skip forward to get past the baggage and on to the point of the story.I’m glad Mike Ridnouer compiled these as a part of the historical record. A worthwhile read...when you have the time.

Excellent accounting--best I've ever read. Highly recommended not only for those who served in Vietnam but also for anyone who wants to know what the air war in Vietnam was really like--from those who were actually in it. Unabridged and unflattering, each of the personal accounts tells the story of events from the eyes and emotions of those who were there, saw it and lived it. From the humor to the horror of war, its all there. Must read.

Col. Ridnouer has done a remarkable job of collecting and publishing personal accounts told by USAF "Yankee Air Pirates" who flew fighters such as the F-105, F4, F-100, & others, against reputedly the most heavily defended arena in the history of aerial warfare. If you want to feel in your viscera what it felt like in the cockpit to attempt survival of Surface-to-Air missiles, MiGs, and torrents of gunfire, not to mention Rules of Engagement and tactics dictated daily by inept bureaucrats and politicians in Washington, this is the read for you. I was there as a Wild Weasel Thud Driver and this book still raises the Goosebumps all these years later.

Military aviators who continued fighting through hundreds of sorties and numerous tours, while many of their close friends were being killed or captured. The US lost thousands of aircraft and pilots in Vietnam, and those who survived went on to design and command the vastly superior and devastating air arms used in Desert Storm I & II as well as other one sided engagements. Lesson learned, but at too high of a cost. McNamara should have been tried for his incompetent handling of Vietnam's ROEs. The communist forces could have been quickly defeated, but instead the civilian leaders disallowed targets and tactics, which led to the huge death toll on both sides, and the prolonged fighting (mostly written about by reporters in the safety of Saigon's bars) which led to such a disaster for South Vietnam and the US. Let us always honor those who have fought and died for our country for they are only following the orders given from our government.

There is nothing like hearing a story from the person who experienced it. These stories are about life in the cockpit over Vietnam and outside the cockpit after the mission. They remind me of my own time in SouthEast Asia. I was not a pilot or back-seater but a crew chief who maintained the airplanes these pilots flew. They could not talk to us about where they were going but we knew they were going somewhere to drop the bombs hanging on the belly of the airplane we gave them to fly. These stories fill in a space that was left open because they could not talk about the mission then. Now that they can, they tell them in their own words and that makes them that much more enjoyable to read. The pages turn quickly and if you only have time for one or two stories, you can easily come back to the book later and not miss anything. Great stories about flying combat missions in the skies over Vietnam. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
