Amazon.com Review
Bridal Counselor Sheryl Paul offers a thoughtful alternative to "bridezilla," the perfectionist bride who acts as if a flawless pricey wedding will ensure a lasting marriage. Instead, Paul uses a workbook format to invite each woman to become "a conscious bride"--one whose pre-nuptial preparations include both emotional and practical to-do lists. The key is working through the ambivalent feelings that surround each tangible task. And here's the payoff: "Working through uncomfortable feelings while planning a wedding is an opening to joy—-an opportunity to be fully present." Each chapter pairs a practical task, such as choosing a location, creating a budget or writing wedding vows, with an emotional one. For example, in one brilliant section, the practicality of making a guest list is paired with the emotional homework of grieving for lost loves and tackling the need to please. Paul's approach creates a fascinating hybrid of anthropology (using a theory of rites of passage) and depth psychology (acknowledging the shadow side of every wedding.) She then packages these insights with a kicking set of charts and checklists. Though targeted for brides, it is not for women only. Powerful exercises urge couples to align every decision to reflect their identity as a couple. Some brides may object to a walk on the dark side of their wedding plans. But in Paul's capable hands, counsel about fear and loss, florists and white satin dresses co-exist without sounding like Dr. Phil meets the former Martha Stewart. Her advice is fresh, highly practical and optimistic. --Barbara Mackoff

Has valuable questions to think about, but seems to spend a lot of time reassuring me that my fears about getting married are normal and trying to help me work through them. I don't have fears about getting married. I just have anxiety about the *wedding.* To be fair, being polyamorous probably keeps me from panicking that I'll never be able to have a crush on someone EVER AGAIN, and poly brides are probably not a large percentage of the audience. I think this would be most helpful for a bride/couple who hasn't already spent a lot of time (particularly in therapy!) talking about the issues she helps raise.
Great wedding planner for anyone that has anxiety. Very insightful. I recommend talking to the woman who wrote this book if you cannot seem to deal with wedding jitters, just google her name.
I have purchased this book for two different friends at the recommendation of a third, and all three have really appreciated it. It's helpful from planning your wedding, making sure you do everything the night before, and what to expect on your wedding night for a more conservative bride.
I really appreciated the advice in this book and the levelheaded approach to rites of passage. I appreciated the emotional/maturity related materials more than the actual organization/worksheets. Thanks to the thoughtful material in this book I was able to embrace both the joy and the sadness of the occasion without feeling confused as to why I had some sadness. It was explained beautifully here and my much younger (at that time) self really needed that information.
I'm going through this together with my fiance. It helps you to take your time and gradually go through the process together while keeping you focused on the reason you're planning a wedding in the first place. It goes through the various struggles people have with the process. Some of them may not apply to your situation but it's actually comforting to read those sections and talk about how grateful you are that you don't have to worry about certain things!
This planner has been absolutely necessary in my wedding planning. I will be buying one for every one of my friends when they decide to marry. Definitely a must have.
My future daughter in law wanted this book. I sent it to her. I understand that she is using it more and more as she plans for her wedding. She is excited about the wedding and I presume this book was just the resource. New brides need help.
If I were a millionaire, I would keep a case of these in my car trunk and hand them out to any women I met who were getting married. I do give a copy to friends and family members who get engaged. When I got engaged a few years ago, I went looking for a wedding planner book and was discouraged by the total focus on the superficial elements of the wedding in every book I found. When I discovered this one it was like a gift. Because of its suggestions I was emotionally prepared for my wedding and my marriage in a way I certainly would not otherwise have been. I am tremendously grateful to Paul for putting the focus of a wedding back where it should be, on the relationship between the two people joining their lives.

I simply love this cookbook. To date, I own only two 'Cook This, Not That' books. I never had the time to really try any of the recipes when I originally bought it but since I had a the time (forced vacation), why not entertain myself? And this proved quick, easy and healthy.First chapter, like the other books, went over simple replacements for the pantry. How one product is slightly better than another and with stats to state the argument. Then the rest of the chapters were the recipes for breakfast, poultry, fish, etc. Each section had about 6-8 recipes. What was especially nice was that there was an image right next to each and every recipe. Since I'm a visual person, this was a major plus. The directions were very easy to follow and not overly complicated. The ingredients are easily available and should be available in your pantry. I did had to buy a few things but they were on my to-buy list in any case.So far, I made 7 recipes - the cheese fries (p. 78), asparagus with fried egg and prosciutto (p. 110), Italian meatball soup (p. 112 - I've already made this twice in the last week), mac & cheese (p. 150), manicotti (p. 154), the roast salmon with lentils (p. 250), and the molten chocolate (p. 344). And they were delicious! Unfortunately I don't have pictures since I'm horrible at plating and taking photographs. But take my word, these were awesomely good. Even my picky eater brother liked it. I did do a few modifications since I didn't have all the ingredients on hand (like kale for escarole) but the recipes were robust enough to handle the adjustments. If you don't own any others in the series, get this one. If you do, I can't say if there are a lot of repeated recipes. In comparison to the other one I own, there were three duplicates. But not enough to turn me away. There was plenty of well-known recipes that had been healthy-upped without sacrificing taste. However, this is not a vegan, gluten-free, or anyone with dietary restrictions-kind of cookbook. The recipes can be modified to your own tastes and diet. But overall, I'm super happy with my purchase and definitely keeping it in my collection.
I could not be happier about purchasing this cook book. I have had many cook books before and I never really loved the content of the book. This book has the best recipes for the typical comfort foods that I am always craving. It is nice to have a healthier way of making these comfort meals. I have actually never seen a comfort food cook book that has healthier recipes in it. I have also looked at other books in this series, like the Grill this, not that book and this one is my favorite. This cook book compares comfort foods from many popular restaurants and gives a healthier version of that recipe. It has everything from snacks to dessert to seafood! It also shows the basic steps to make a meal in a crockpot from scratch and how to make meatballs. It has many useful tips for cooking that are not found in many other books. We have loved every recipe that we have tried from this cook book. I have saved many recipes from all of them. It actually took me a little while to find this book available for purchase. Many book stores do not carry this book either in store or online. Of course when I did find it online, Amazon had the lowest price. I have and will continue to recommend this book to friends and family. It is the best way to eat a little healthier and still enjoy delicious comfort foods.
MOSTLY BECAUSE OF THIS SERIES OF BOOKS. 75+/- GONE!!! I PURCHASE EVERY NEW ONE & OWN 10 OR (sorry for shouting) more actual books, as well as downloaded on my new kindle, duplicates of books I already own. So much easier than bringing 3 to 4 books from house to work to car. Love my kindle, too. These are my weight loss Bibles. Friends & family ask how hard it was, what did I do. It was so easy I still can't believe it! Am at a plateau, but have kept off (other than 5 lbs up & down) what I lost for for more than 5 months. Winter sucks! I also recommend Rocco DiSpirito, Eat This Now, excellent recipes & Hungry Girl(minus EVERYTHING being fat free. Low fat works if you're aware of your portions. Also, bought all my books through Amazon. Used like New. And every one was like new! For a fraction of the cost. Good Luck and Don't Give Up!
First book i have bought from the cook this not that line but i must say it is a fantastic read. I have many cook books that i have bought but this one may be my favorite just because it focuses on cooking foods that one would actually want to eat. Comfort foods made in a way that lowers the fat/calorie content but still keeps the food tasting the way it should. Anyone can lose wait by eating plates of vegetables and drinking water all day but this book focuses on taking food that most people grew up and presenting it in a way to cut back on a lot of the fat. They also point out just how much fat, sodium, and calories are hidden behind a lot of the favorite restaurants that the mass majority frequently dine at. The Chee$e cake factory being one of them. I have cooked a few recipes so far from the book and i must say they are delicious. To each their own I guess but I was really shocked at how many little post it note tabs i put in this book for recipes that i had to try.
This book is full of useful information on staple items for your pantry, tips on creating healthy recipes and easy recipes that can be swapped out for favorites at nationally know restaurants. The other interesting aspect of this book is the information concerning the restaurants with the least healthy food so even if you do not cook at home and eat out more this book will help you avoid the unhealthy selections on the menu. The one thing I learned was some of the items that you would think are the healthy more then likely are not healthy at all. As for the recipes most are pretty easy to make and taste really good. Following the recipes in the book I've managed to take of ten pounds with little to no exercise while recovering from a knee injury. If you're looking to lose some weight or just eat healthier this book is a good choice.

I read an interview with the author in the Washington Post Sunday magazine. I was so taken with the author and his love for a dog found in combat inAfghanistan that I ordered three copies. They arrived quickly and I started to read the book—it is a wonderful story about a man and a neat dog who connect and help one another recover from war experiences. But it is so much more! The author’s voice, his kind and respectful voice about the guys he fought with, and his bonding lifeline with Fred who helps him recover make for a wonderful restorative read. I am now going to order three more copies for gifts because in this fractious time, it is important to read about the bonds of goodness that hold us together.
After watching Craig and Fred interviewed on FOX4 in Dallas, my girlfriend and I made plans to go meet these two at a Barnes & Noble book signing event in Southlake, TX. I’m so glad we did! Craig is a very friendly and personable guy, someone I’d love to have a beer with! Fred is…well, he is a lovable fur ball, and mostly snoozed under the table, but I think he enjoyed getting his ears scratched. My only regret is that I hadn’t read the book Craig & Fred before I met them. That meeting would have meant so much more to me.Now that I have read the book, I can not say enough good things about it…there are not enough positive adjectives to describe it. Craig is an excellent writer! I especially enjoyed the layout of chapters…each alternated with what Craig and Fred were dealing with in Afghanistan with their life afterwards in the US. Occasionally Craig left his readers hanging, for example, not finishing a gut wrenching description of a mission before jumping to the next chapter of events back home. His descriptions of Fred’s immense influence on him during his deployment, and his journey through recovery afterward were a joy to read. Not the least in importance was Craig’s dogged determination to get Fred out of Afghanistan and into the United States. I commend him for not giving up, but the reader will learn that is Craig’s modus operandi for life. Finally, I am a Vietnam Veteran (Navy…blue water). I’ve read many books about that war to better understand what was happening in country. Craig’s personal accounts of his missions and firefights in Afghanistan will greatly help non-veterans and non-combat veterans gain tremendous insight into what our men and women deal with in that battle torn country. For example, the horror of IEDs will now be understood.Thank you Craig and Fred. You’ve given a tremendous gift to your readers.
A well written book. Read it all in one sitting! Gives those of us who will never go to war an appreciation for the daily courage it takes to perform that job to it's highest level, and the price it's aftermath exacts on many of those who do. I chose to start reading this book because it was a dog story. I kept reading because it was so much more than that. Thank you Craig for sharing your story of life and service in Afghanistan and after, and Fred's story and the lessons you have learned from his dog wisdom. Many happy years together to you both.
I went to high school with Craig Grossi. This true story is fatastic and wonderful. It proves that you can find a friend the strangest of places. Thank you for awnsering the call from Uncle Sam. Oooh-rah.
What a great book. It is fun, interesting and sad at the same time. It shows the realities of war and how close relationships can help you through. As a dog lover Fred's story is very heartwarming. A must read!
Beautifully written memoir. This is a story everyone will enjoy. It will capture you from the first page. This new author draws you in to share the highs and lows of growing up, becoming a Marine and the path which takes an expected turn,
Another great read, this marine had a lot to worry about yet he made time for the dog. I finished this book in one night, I just couldn't put it down and to think this is a true story. He needed the dog and the dog needed him.
This a heart warming story that I recommend to anyone who appreciates genuine people and/or pups. Fred is the perfect example of the healing and introspection a dog can provide to a human. Thank you, Craig, for your service, and for rescuing Fred, and sharing your story.

Review
“An enraging, fascinating, singular book.†- Slate“More than anything, The Lifespan of a Fact pushes readers to consider not just the possibilities of art, but also its boundaries. It’s as concerned with what we can get away with as whether we should.†- A.V. Club“A singularly important meditation on fact and fiction, the imagination and life, fidelity and freedom. Provocative, maddening, and compulsively readable, The Lifespan of a Fact pulses through a forest of detail to illuminate high-stakes, age-old questions about art and ethics―questions to which the book (blessedly!) provides no easy answers.†- Maggie Nelson“Thus begins the alternately absorbing and infuriating exercise that is The Lifespan of a Fact, a Talmudically arranged account of the conflict between Jim Fingal, zealous checker, and John D’Agata, nonfiction fabulist.†- Gideon Lewis-Kraus, New York Times Magazine“Genius…In The Lifespan of a Fact, D’Agata and Fingal turn everything around on us until even our most basic assumptions are left unclear…A vivid and reflective meditation on the nature of nonfiction as literary art.†- David L. Ulin, Los Angeles Times“The Lifespan of a Fact might be the most improbably entertaining book ever published.†- NPR“A whip-smart, mordantly funny, thought-provoking rumination on journalistic responsibility and literary license.†- Publishers Weekly, starred review“Less a book than a knock-down, drag-out fight between two tenacious combatants over questions of truth, belief, history, myth, memory and forgetting.†- Jennifer McDonald, New York Times Book Review“The Lifespan of a Fact is remarkable not only as an intellectual adventure, but for its portrayal of the search for these kinds of truths as a conversation. It is a high-stakes exercise not of surety but of anxiety…open to the production of wonder, but equally to that of doubt, frustration, and betrayal.†- The New Republic“A fascinating and dramatic power struggle over the intriguing question of what nonfiction should, or can, be.†- Lydia Davis

When this book came out, I read it and loved it, and then went to the author event for it at McNally Jackson Bookstore in NY. The 2 authors read and discussed and then the audience got involved too. I was very much on the side of Jim Fingal, the copy editor, as were many audience members. Near the end, D’Agata was talking about how capturing the culture of Las Vegas was more important to him than whether the fall from the tower was exactly 9 seconds. I raised my hand and said, “If we can’t trust you on the 9 seconds, how can we trust you on the culture of Las Vegas?†He got flustered and was at a loss for words. I felt bad and made a light comment so he could go on. I talked nicely to him afterwards and also to Fingal, and at greater length to the editor, who was also there. I’m going to see the Broadway version next month and plan to wait at the stage door to get autographs from all 3 actors. Hopefully I can find the copy of the book with the authors’ autographs.
LORD Chancellor. Now, sir, what excuse have you to offer for having disobeyed an order of the Court of Chancery?STREPHON. My Lord, I know no Courts of Chancery; I go by Nature’s Acts of Parliament. The bees – the breeze – the seas – the rooks – the brooks – the gales – the vales – the fountains and the mountains cry, “You love this maiden – take her, we command you!†’Tis writ in heaven by the bright barbèd dart that leaps forth into lurid light from each grim thundercloud. The very rain pours forth her sad and sodden sympathy! When chorused Nature bids me take my love, shall I reply, “Nay, but a certain Chancellor forbids it Sir, you are England's Lord High Chancellor, but are you Chancellor of birds and trees, king of the winds and prince of thunder-clouds?Ld. Chan. No.It's a nice point; I don't know that I ever met it before. But my difficulty is, that at present there's no evidence before the court that chorused Nature has interested herself in the matter.Streph. No evidence? You have my word for it. I tell you that she bade me take my love.Ld. Chan. Ah I but, my good sir, you mustn't tell us what she told you; it's not evidence. Now, an affidavit from a thunder- storm or a few words on oath from a heavy shower would meet with all the attention they deserve.Streph. And have you the heart to apply the prosaic rules of evidence to a case which bubbles over with poetical emotion?Iolanthe, Act IGilbert and Sullivan, 1882I am very frustrated with John D’Agata and Jim Fingal’s The Lifespan of a Fact. The four stars are because there is a lot here for a reader consider. The material is engaging and intelligent. There are words that may keep this from being read by many people and the suicide of a teen age is not likely to be a topic for family night reading.I first heard of John D’Agato and Jim Fingal’s book The Life Span of a Fact was in a review of the New York stage, I understood this to be about the problem of wiring a story in the age of “False News†and the apparent righteousness of body slamming a reporter. The media has a long history of self-critism and this looked to be a chance to read some intelligent arguments about the way the media have been politicized (actually it has been for many decades going back to when newspaper publishers routinely ran for and won office), and what has morphed into weaponized divisive argument that defies what America should be about. The Life Span is about none of that. In fact it is a debate who time has either gone or cannot be vital until more immediate public concerns have been brought down from the precipice of bombing, (here in the US, mass shooting (In France) and the deliberate state sponsored murder of a reporter (Jamal Khashoggi). In Life Span the case is made that by calling your product an essay, the author has infinite freedom to rewrite prosaic history in the name of whatever esoteric poetical emotional truth that fits the writer. At the time my used edition was published in 2012 this may have been an important topic. In 2018 it adds poison to a well where the water already been made bitter. The book itself is a dramatization of an actual series of exchanges between an essayist and a fact checker. The essay in question is about the Las Vegas suicide by jumping by a teenager, Levi Presley. We are not told if the editor intends to publish the essay as a literal recitation of the facts or as a dramatization of the facts.John D’Agato is a well-established essayist. He has definite beliefs about the term. In this book he will argue passionately that the writer must serve art in preference to fact if by doing so the essayist helps the reader to experience a deeper and more aesthetically meaningful appreciation of the events under discussion. In fact the essay is a poorly defined medium of expression and it is legitimately plastic in the matter of content. A case can be made that it occupies literary space between fiction and non-fiction.D’Agato goes further; insisting that the term Non-fiction is new and that facts are rarely absolute. He tosses out several famously named essayists arguing that the history of the essay is the history of exactly his understanding of the rights and duties of the essayist. Earlier he established that in taking this assignment he made it clear to the editor that he is not a reporter and that he will not be bound by the rules of journalism.Perhaps on the strength of this warning, Jim Fingal is tasked with fact checking the proposed article and in writing is ordered to “comb through this marking anything and everything…†In taking the assignment, Jim is at once literal and increasingly meticulous and unforgiving. His questions everything from the number of seconds given for the boy’s fall to the color of bricks and the exact routes between locations. The author comes off as an arrogant, defender of his every invention and demonstrably wrong statement. The Fact Checker become so focused on his mission he will even challenge the facts as given in the report from the Coroner’s office.Ultimately I had little patience with either person.D’Agata will on two occasions make appeals to authority. In logic this argument can count as a fallacy or not. The way D’Agata applies the technique it is fallacious. He states the rules were set out by the ancient Roman orator, Cicero, among other and does not state those laws.Worse the writer states that If his reader feels betrayed when they realize how often an ostensibly nonfiction article is in fact fictional, he turns on the readership, complaining that they are too poorly educated to understand the writer’s rights. D’Agata could have made a reference to the failure of the 1913 audience to appreciate Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. There the portion of the audience that was known to reject anything new were when presented with ultra-modern music and lacking appreciation for the non-traditional choreography of Vaslav Nijinsky; they rioted.Instead the 2018 reader has the peculiar juxtaposing of a writer arguing for “Fake News†if the fakery is in service of art, and a time where the press is under increasing demands to clear not only the kinds of niggling fact checking of Fingal, but the creation of elaborate, fictional conspiracies to replace the prosaic, researched and fact checked. The Lifespan of a Fact is good writing. It is not apropos to the moment and does not serve D’Agata. It is a good book, but a prospective reader needs to know that this is not about journalism. It is a high-level discussion of a very particular type of writing, the essay.
A great book for attaining insight into the world of journalism and column writing. In this age of "fake news," this book brings the concepts of truth and fact into question. John's article is featured in the middle of the page, while his conversation with Jim, the fact checker, outlines the boarders. Their discussion focuses on a variety of issues surrounding the truth behind John's claims regarding a suicide in Las Vegas. From the color of the bricks on the Vegas Strip to the number of suicide victims discussed, this book makes you consider the necessity of writers always telling the truth and the fine line they have to walk between outright lying to the public and enticing the public to read their work. Would you care if a news reporter told you that the color of the president's tie was red when in reality it was blue, just because it sounded better within the paragraph? How about if 40 people were killed in a shootout instead of the 100 that a newsman reported? Which truth is more relevant? why? and is a reporter still a liar if he omits certain details? these are the questions addressed. A must have for understanding the balance between effective storytelling and accurate reportage.
A surprisingly engaging book that bares uncomfortable truths about journalism and what can be stated as fact. The exchanges between Fingal the Fact Checker and D'Agata the Tale Spinner are always entertaining and sometimes hilarious. D'Agata deserves a lot of credit for letting this book come to light because throughout it he seems to have little regard for facts, changing them at will. "Never let the facts get in the way of a good story," they used to say in journalism school. D'Agata follows this creed but is caught with his pants down.
I thought it would be about fake news, in the current political context, but not at all. It's a fascinating story comparing two peoples' versions of the truth. Is it more accurate to have every fact correct in an essay, or to present the correct thoughts and feelings via some creative license?

From Publishers Weekly
"Buddhist fiction" is a contradictory notion, admits Wheeler, a Buddhist practitioner and recipient of two O. Henry awards. "Everything that seems to be happening to 'you' and 'me' is already like a fiction, from a Buddhist's standpoint, and the thing to do is to unravel your involvement in the story, not become entranced and follow it to the end," she explains. Yet she also admits that the Buddhist tradition is rich in stories, especially in the teaching of the sutras. Best to sidestep the spiritual quagmire of this discussion, and just relish the beauty of these well-told tales. Wheeler has assembled a stellar collection, including the titular "Nixon Under the Bodhi Tree," an O. Henry awardâ€"winning story by Gerald Reilly. Many stories, with their Zen sparseness, clean imagery and lingering depths, could proudly stand beside the finest of the genre, such as the fiction of Gail Tsukiyama. Marie Henry's half-page story, "At the Change of Seasons," is so spare and profound it reads like a haiku that's been gently stretched into prose. Some speak so intimately to the teachings of Buddhism that they read like inside jokesâ€"which isn't necessarily a bad thing, considering how satisfying these jokes are to insiders. For instance, Dinty W. Moore's exquisitely joyful two-page story about reality and illusion ("No Kingdom of the Eyes") could be lost on nonpractitioners, but will easily elicit a chuckle from many struggling students of Buddhism. Another standout is Ira Sukrungruang's classic tale, "The Golden Mix," a commanding, crass and earthy story about what might happen if Buddha showed up at the local dog pound. This collection is all that fans of fiction and Buddhism hope forâ€"full of play, insight, revelation and diversity, and never compromising in delight.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Review
"You'll relish the beauty of these well-told tales. Wheeler has assembled a stellar collection, one that fans of fiction and Buddhism hope for--full of play, insight, revelation, and diversity, and never compromising in delight." (Publishers Weekly)"This marvelous collection of nearly 30 specimens of Buddhist fiction shows not only the promise of a genre that is scarcely known as such, but what has already been accomplished by the small but growing band of writers melding the truth of dharma with the invention of fiction. From German filmmaker-novelist Doris Dorrie's unflinching depiction of the 'sheer torture' of meditation to an excerpt from Keith Kachtick's remarkable 2003 novel 'Hungry Ghost', and from works shorter than a page to stories that run several thousand words, the pieces here explore the mundane and the metaphysical with cold eyes and warm hearts. Together, they comprise a captivating view of the landscape of mindfulness." (Yoga Journal)"A milestone in Buddhist fiction. . . . Vigilant readers may have noticed a growing number of novels with Buddhist themes, but you wont see a Buddhist fiction shelf in bookstores. It's out there, but it hasn't been easy to find. Until now. In Nixon Under the Bodhi Tree, Kate Wheeler has assembled a marvelous collection of stories, inspired, in one way or another, by Buddhism. They range in length from a few lines to several thousand words, and cover topics as diverse as driving, acting, politics, food, birth, rebirth, love, death, murder, suicide, animal adoption, and lawn mowing. Certain themes emerge--we meet monks and nuns and earnest and not-so-earnest meditators--but there are plenty of surprises. As novelist and scholar Charles Johnson writes in his elegant foreword, these stories succeed because they 'dramatize the dharma by taking us intimately into the loves of their characters,' and show us 'how the Buddhist experience is simply the human experience.' This volume is surely a milestone in Western Buddhist literature--and a book that fiction lovers, Buddhist or otherwise will very much enjoy." (Tricycle)"Poetry & painting yes, but Buddhist fiction? Well, the Chinese and Japanese have been at it for centuries. Now Kate Wheeler has provided a collection of Western-style short stories, homegrown and full of vernacular salt. You'll want to keep this on the shelf with Kerouac." (Andrew Schelling, Naropa University, author of Wild Form, Savage Grammar)"This fine collection of stories introduces a strikingly diverse range of voices who tell their tales with warmth and wit. I enjoyed it very much." (Stephen Batchelor, author of Buddhism without Beliefs)"The twenty-nine short stories stimulate the reader to consider the multifarious paths to the awakened mind. All of them address classic Buddhist concepts, yet do so in the most contemporary of ways, [raising] awareness of how Buddhist practice and interpretation are experienced in the West. [Wheeler's] personal and professional experience infuses the collection with both breadth and depth." (ForeWord)"An extraordinary collection. These beautifully crafted stories are poignant, ironic, compassionate and inspiring. They are a testimony to the ability of the literary imagination to provide glimpses of the mystical dimension of everyday life and the thusness of existence. They illuminate the beauty, frailty and yearning of the human soul." (Jeremy D. Safran, Editor of Psychoanalysis and Buddhism)"The first anthology of a budding genre: Buddhist fiction. Some of the short stories here are autobiographical; others play off the travelogue idiom and portray-- with some interesting twists-- spiritual seekers in distrant lands. More often they take place in everyday America: an urban stoop, the beach, a job interview. The stories here are diverse, and intriguing." (Buddhadharma)"This strange and startling anthology is a welcome effort. There are many moments of beauty in these stories. Whether you are a Buddhist practitioner or just a fiction lover, you'll want to read them with pen in hand, underlining an effective phrase or flash of literary insight. A significant debut collection." (Shambhala Sun)"Kate Wheeler is one of my favorite writers, and now I see what a good editor she is too. I love the concept of Nixon Under the Bodhi Tree, and found so many of the pieces surprising, intriguing, and even mind-opening." (Sandy Boucher, author of Dancing in the Dharma and Discovering Kwan Yin)

This book has such a wide array of stories in a genre that seems to be developing in the U.S. in the last few years. If one has a spiritual orientation, and has enjoyed fiction, it becomes hard to read the kind of books that are oriented towards mystery stories, high tension dramas, tales of romance, etc. They just are rather hollow after your orientation changes. Yet texts on teachings also run out of gas after a while: you know what the map looks like, there's no need to keep reading the manual. Some which are oriented more to inspiration than instruction are still nourishing. Poetry in the spiritual mode is also good but usually just a brief touch. But this collection of fiction presented by this host of different presenters is quite powerful. The outlook is primarily Buddhist but many of the stories are just presenting an aspect of the fundamental questions of existence and the "Buddhist" part does not even apply. It's just looking at our aliveness from many viewpoints. Not everything will be loved by every reader but there is so much variation in the orientation and style that it makes you look forward to each new offering as it comes up. Also, an unexpected gift was that these offerings led me to explore other writings of some of the writers: for example, Pico Iyer, and Francesca Hampton (her "Greyhound Boddhisattva" is stunning. There are many other treats here and the impact of many of the stories is quite wonderful.
Although an engaging title, most of the essays in this book fell short of my expectations. I had imagined that I would be reading about uplifting qualities of Buddhism. However, I found that most of the stories reflected challenges of a "secular world" and they did not interest me. Perhaps my expectations were the problem. For readers who may want to explore some of the characteristics of Buddhism, this book probably won't fulfill that need or expectation.
Fun read.
Since the first time I checked this book out of my local library I've checked it out again so many times that I finally decided to just purchase my own copy. There are many great short stories in this collection and two that blew me away. One I read out loud at different times to both my children and girlfriend and wrote the author a note of thanks.
What's this first-ever anthology of "Buddhist fiction" offer? Editor Kate Wheeler comments how according to dharma, everything's already a fiction; stories represent "a redoubled version of the existential mistake that lies at the heart of all suffering." (xiv) Still, traditions in Buddhism tell stories, and the ones here come from contemporary writers, a few well-known, many humbler practitioners. I preferred the longer stories to the shorter-- they can range from the standout not-quite holiday in Cambodia "Beheadings" by Kira Salek at thirty-four pages and the fine first chapter from Keith Katchtick's ambitious novel "Hungry Ghost" (see my review) to three-paragraph glimpses of insight.I liked the stories that took on the curious predicaments of people trying to learn about Buddhism or attempting to practice it while questioning its estranging qualities in daily life; those by some writers from within the tradition tended to be less gripping, perhaps from insider's situations unfamiliar to me. Some entries appeared to be memoirs rather than fiction. Sharon Cameron's essay on meditation in its disorienting intensity seems not so much fiction as self-dramatization; Anne Carolyn Klein's account of translation appears non-fiction; Pico Iyer's excerpt from his Japan narrative feels factual.Others by certain, higher-profile writers may have been chosen more on their content or the reputation of their contributors rather than merit that a "blind" selection process might have selected, I suspect. Some of these, taking place in monasteries or on retreats, appear aimed at the likely audience already in the know. Still, especially for experienced students and teachers, I suppose many of these entries might satisfy-- the key verb for inclusion Wheeler notes--most readers.Gerald Reilly's title story and M.J. Huang's parable "Rebirth," start off this collection promisingly. Ira Sukrungruang's "The Golden Mix" keeps the oddness of its setting, an animal shelter, and its visitor without becoming cloying or cute-- which in less skillful hands could have decayed. Instead, we get this easygoing, yet unsettling, tale in everyday dialogue and ordinary Midwestern settings infused with a bit of mystery. Such offbeat, without being coy, moments enrich Francesca Hampton's "Greyhound Bodhisattva" and Easton Waller's "The War Against the Lawns," paired well together, as are many entries as arranged by Wheeler.Salek's inquiring narrator takes us into the longest story, "Beheadings," which in the best manner feels as if told to us first-hand, as real life. It concludes perfectly. Seeking her brother in Cambodia as the Khmer Rouge still occupy parts of the territory, she looks for her vanished, damaged, suffering brother. "David might have said my karma was good, though he couldn't have known how much I tempted the world. How much I hated it for its senseless parceling of benevolence and pain."This tough-mindedness, in Reilly, Huang, Sukrungruang, Hampton, Waller, and Salek, makes this anthology at its strongest far from a sentimental or pat assembly of platitudes. Buddhism upends many from their meditation mats. In some of the best stories, these challenging rather than comforting teachings are confronted and puzzled over by those on the outside looking in, in more ways than one.Victor Pelevin's "The Guest at the Feast of Bon" shows why his postmodern novels attract a cult following. I can't give away much, but this reminded me of his Russian forebears, or Hesse or Camus, in his philosophical reflections merged into an eerie meditation. "We call God that which we are not yet capable of killing, but once we have killed it, the matter is closed." (237) Killing one's self, the narrator reflects, "is an attempt to kill the God dwelling within us. We are punishing him for condemning us to torment, we are attempting to match him in omnipotence, we may even usurp his function by putting a sudden end to the puppet show he began." This existential tale takes on Japan, St. Sebastian, belief, death, and dragons and it ends as the penultimate entry in this collection hauntingly.

The author is a genius in putting together such an impressive collection of pilots, their exploits, and their stories about air combat in North Viet Nam. This book should be on every pilot's book shelf or pilot "want a be." The details are enormous and every chapter has a personal account that is important in maintaining the reader's interest and in immortalizing every pilot mentioned. I truly am a fan of this book and it is truly one of a kind. My only complaint, not enough photos, and I am sure in many cases very painful because so many airmen did not come home to their beloved families. The author tells it like it is when it comes to bad leadership and he minces no words in writing about these people and how bad leadership compromised lives and missions. I highly recommend.
This book is one of the finest accounts of true stories as told by those fighter pilots who experienced the deadly air war over North Vietnam on a daily basis. These accounts bring about a full spectrum of emotions from the shear terror these men experienced to the typical fighter pilot humor as well as the insanity of some of the strategies for conducting the air war from Washington's elite politicians. This is a book filled with poignant individual accounts of bravery, loss and exhilaration but above all, it conveys a sense of devotion to duty and one's fellow warriors. I will read these stories over and over and will always admire and appreciate the sacrifices these young men made for each other and for our country. Surely they can claim title to their own "Greatest of their Generation."
This is a collection of stories about the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam Nam. F-100’s, F-105’s, F-4’s and F-111 mostly. It’s composed of dozens of personal recollections. Most are engaging, some are gripping combat accounts and still others are what happens with 20-somethings in an O-Club bar or BOQ.The reason I’m giving it 3 stars is the inconsistency, which can hardly be a surprise. A few writers are extremely articulate. A bunch are funny as hell. Too many might have been excellent sticks but not so skilled as writers. The latter is not to detract from what they did. It’s just that I needed to skip forward to get past the baggage and on to the point of the story.I’m glad Mike Ridnouer compiled these as a part of the historical record. A worthwhile read...when you have the time.
Excellent accounting--best I've ever read. Highly recommended not only for those who served in Vietnam but also for anyone who wants to know what the air war in Vietnam was really like--from those who were actually in it. Unabridged and unflattering, each of the personal accounts tells the story of events from the eyes and emotions of those who were there, saw it and lived it. From the humor to the horror of war, its all there. Must read.
Col. Ridnouer has done a remarkable job of collecting and publishing personal accounts told by USAF "Yankee Air Pirates" who flew fighters such as the F-105, F4, F-100, & others, against reputedly the most heavily defended arena in the history of aerial warfare. If you want to feel in your viscera what it felt like in the cockpit to attempt survival of Surface-to-Air missiles, MiGs, and torrents of gunfire, not to mention Rules of Engagement and tactics dictated daily by inept bureaucrats and politicians in Washington, this is the read for you. I was there as a Wild Weasel Thud Driver and this book still raises the Goosebumps all these years later.
Military aviators who continued fighting through hundreds of sorties and numerous tours, while many of their close friends were being killed or captured. The US lost thousands of aircraft and pilots in Vietnam, and those who survived went on to design and command the vastly superior and devastating air arms used in Desert Storm I & II as well as other one sided engagements. Lesson learned, but at too high of a cost. McNamara should have been tried for his incompetent handling of Vietnam's ROEs. The communist forces could have been quickly defeated, but instead the civilian leaders disallowed targets and tactics, which led to the huge death toll on both sides, and the prolonged fighting (mostly written about by reporters in the safety of Saigon's bars) which led to such a disaster for South Vietnam and the US. Let us always honor those who have fought and died for our country for they are only following the orders given from our government.
There is nothing like hearing a story from the person who experienced it. These stories are about life in the cockpit over Vietnam and outside the cockpit after the mission. They remind me of my own time in SouthEast Asia. I was not a pilot or back-seater but a crew chief who maintained the airplanes these pilots flew. They could not talk to us about where they were going but we knew they were going somewhere to drop the bombs hanging on the belly of the airplane we gave them to fly. These stories fill in a space that was left open because they could not talk about the mission then. Now that they can, they tell them in their own words and that makes them that much more enjoyable to read. The pages turn quickly and if you only have time for one or two stories, you can easily come back to the book later and not miss anything. Great stories about flying combat missions in the skies over Vietnam. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

The book is written decently but I WAS NOT expecting the content.I was drawn in by the reviews and the book summary but what I thought might be another "Girl on the Train" was actually a pretty messed up story. The book includes abuse of women, including intended abuse on a handicapped girl. It's DARK to say the least. To make it worse, the ending was probably the most anticlimactic thing I've ever read... my response was "That was it?"If you're into sadistic books, abuse on women, abuse of handicapped, and are cool with some nightmares, this ones for you!
Page 81. That's how far I read before this book delivered an iota of interesting content. I read beyond that, wanting to believe it was finally going to get better, and I was sorely disappointed. The front and inside cover are littered with raving reviews. Either these people were paid for their glowing comments or they are just as shallow and unintelligent as this story. WOW. It is REALLY bad. I will confess I did not finish it- after being already frustrated 100 pages into the book , I decided to read the amazon reviews and it was just as I expected. The book is predictable and not worth the time. My apologies to the author- as I hate to criticize anyone's hard work and try to find something good in every book I read. This one I could not, perhaps it is just not 'my cup of tea' - but I had to put it down,
I was thrilled to buy this book after reading a sample as I enjoy domestic suspense, but I couldn't get past the 20% mark, if I even got that far. Reading this book is an exercise in sadism, like bathing your psyche in razor blades just for fun. Maybe some readers are into that, but I'm not. If you want a good domestic thriller, skip this filth and read "Big Little Lies" or "Before I Go to Sleep" instead. Far superior plot and writing, and without the sadism.
Another thriller that had me from the very beginning. This was one of the best books that I have read in years. I quickly recommended it to several of my friends who enjoy good fiction.
This book was fairly predictable from the first page. And, I found it impossible to believe that in today's world, this woman wouldn't have been able to stand up for herself. Just too weak a premise to be an enjoyable read.
Damn! This lady can write!! I read psychological thrillers a lot~it's my favorite genre~~~~but this one tops anything I've read in quite a while. I think the content might be too "strong" for some, but being so well written might make it more palatable for those offended by the content. I am beginning to read her second novel, "The Breakdown". I hope she continues gushing out words, stories, and characters as creative as those in  "Behind Closed Doors".From one who has experienced a similar situation, I wish I could give it more than 5 stars.
This story had so many holes in it it should of been called " Behind Swiss Cheese " ..The wife had many opportunities to escape but the author made up countless excuses for her, none of them logical..boring, predictable and poorly written..
Behind Closed Doorsby. B. A. ParisIt feels so good when you dive into a book from a new author to you and you are blown away by it. Behind Close Doors is a suspense/triller like no other. It keeps you on the edge of your sit every single page. You will be constantly asking yourself why oh why??!!! You wont want to put it down for one second. It will make you question sanity and how are people really like behind closed doors. Maybe your neighbor is not as friendly?, maybe your coworker like to do naughty strange things? , maybe I’m a weirdo?!! Jjajaja. The thing is; so many things can happen in the life of a married couple and we wouldn’t know it.“He prides himself on uttering only the truth, and enjoys that I am the only one who understands the meaning behind his wordsâ€.In this book we get to go inside the walls of Jack and Grace Angel house. They are the epitome of PERFECTION. Perfect wife, perfect husband, perfect house, perfect job. Just PERFECT EVERYTHING, right??!! Ooooh no, so many things aren’t as we see them and what would that may be would you ask? Well that’s for me to know and for you to find out. Trust me is sooo good. One thing I will let you know is that I have NEVER EVER hated a character as much as I hate Jack Angel. The man is a sadistic psychopath. A wolf wearing sheeps clothing. So go see how this man can make your skin scrawled!!! “It’s a shame he’s such a sadistic bastard, because he has wonderful mannersâ€.
